Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

I’d allow them to park on my drive and that’s as far as it would go!

Accyd · 28/12/2022 17:06

🍿

AlinaSquareQueen · 28/12/2022 17:06

I agree with everyone - this takes the biscuit on CFery! And unbelievable it’s already made local news, if not the Daily Mail anytime soon.

I think the OP will know if someone has been staying in her house, even if they’ve left it immaculate…. you’d just KNOW wouldn’t you??

No reply to my text this morning, I have not texted or called since. My partner has a online blog. Nothing reveling or address etc. Its to do with his hobby (bird watching...I know😂) and he has been posting about the trip we were on today as next door neighbours husband knows about the blog and sometimes looks at it so knows we aren't on our way home anything soon.

You said at half three today that your mum and sister were on the way to check on your house? Surely they have checked now? @Castleontheisland

OnlyFannys · 28/12/2022 17:07

Well done for sending the family round to check. It's good of them to travel so far and I hope it ends up being for no reason as I would feel horribly violated if someone did this to me.

OP said earlier up the thread they live 70-80 miles away, so it'll take time to get there, plus they could've turned up and all hell's broken loose!

Mushroomlady · 28/12/2022 17:15

A live CF thread 🍿
Sorry OP, I can't believe they would think that it's okay to ask once, let alone hassle you, and then not return your calls. I agree with PPs that I think they've already let themselves in. Either that or they've got the hump that you didn't say yes so they're now just ignoring you.

ItsBritneyBitch45 · 28/12/2022 17:16

Wow this is genuinely insane!!

Surely it doesn’t matter how close you are with your neighbour (which in OPs case, they aren’t even close at all), you’d never ask if random people could stay in their house?! Definitely get your mum to get the key back from the neighbours. They’re totally out of order for even asking

Bingobangodrinkacanoftango · 28/12/2022 17:16

Absolutely think they have already done it and have thrown the request again and again as they need you to agree so they can cover their own arses! I would be so upset OP - I really hope they haven’t.

red4321 · 28/12/2022 17:22

*This is seriously concerning that 3 police units and tracker dogs turned up within five mins of a house alarm going off.

Surely there was a better use of all the resource, without even knowing the situation*.

I pay a yearly fee to have my alarm monitored such that the police attend if I don't turn it off or confirm it was a false alarm. It's a payable option for people who have alarms.

Yes, the first police car was on the scene within 5 minutes of the alarm going off and the monitoring station calling them. Perhaps they were passing and I got lucky, who knows. We live in a low crime area so iI doubt it was diverting police from something more serious or they wouldn't have chosen to send three cars.

According to the police, there's been a spate of burglaries carried out by a particular gang of professionals they wanted to catch hence the deployment of the dogs. We have cctv so the police response was all recorded when we watched it back.

And on that note, I'm not going to be drawn further as frankly it's derailing the thread.

CuriousMama · 28/12/2022 17:22

@Castleontheisland how did it go when bil got there.

The OP didn’t say that, they said “(its about 80 to 90 minutes drive away for them)”

Soothsayer1 · 28/12/2022 17:25

if only you'd installed cameras OP👀

howilovebrightlights · 28/12/2022 17:24

My mistake! Either way, they might not be there yet.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/12/2022 17:29

Even if they haven't (though I strongly suspect they have) to keep asking is beyond the pale

It's the "keeping on asking" which seems the red flag here, suggesting the visitors are already in there and the NDN's frantically trying to cover herself with an agreement after the fact - would also explain the lack of responses to OP clearly saying no

Sincerely hope I'm wrong though ...

AliceOlive · 28/12/2022 17:34

This is so galling!! I’d pay someone to sit in the house tonight in the dark until they showed up.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/12/2022 17:36

Well this is absolutely batshit.

My NDN and I each have a key to each other’s houses to let the dogs out occasionally. It’s been an absolute godsend as it’s given us so much more freedom, we were out shopping all afternoon before Christmas and it was such a relief to know that we didn’t have to rush back. I’ve known her for years and she’s lovely.

I honestly don’t think it would occur to either of us to ask to use the others house!

MadMadMadamMim · 28/12/2022 17:36

I would be absolutely furious at the idea of utter strangers letting themselves into my home and settling in to stay whilst I was away.

I cannot imagine anything worse.

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 28/12/2022 17:38

I am angry on your behalf. I can't imagine anyone decent doing this.

PurpleButterflyWings · 28/12/2022 17:07

You said at half three today that your mum and sister were on the way to check on your house? Surely they have checked now? @Castleontheisland

With a journey time of 80-90 minutes; could be longer if lots of other people journeying today, perhaps returning home after Christmas or going to spend New Year elsewhere.

@Ursuladevine where I live, admittedly a sparsely populated place with little crime, the police have a helicopter up in the air for a suspected anything! I should imagine when actual crimes happen, they have a celebration and let off party poppers. There’s a reason that we locals call it the pimple in the boil on the bum of the earth…….

My DD works in a shop at weekends and had to call the police recently when some unhappy customers let their displeasure be known by throwing soft furnishings around the shop. The police were there within 5 minutes and mall security also turned up. So 10 people (8 police, 2 security) for crimes against cushions!

Soothsayer1 · 28/12/2022 17:43

It's so mind boggling that I wonder if they perhaps dont understand the norms of our culture?

AlbertaAnnie · 28/12/2022 17:45

I would be extremely pissed off…..any news op?

Angrywife · 28/12/2022 17:48

Very sus! Hope it's all clear when your family get there

whoruntheworldgirls · 28/12/2022 17:49

Hope it's all ok OP, can't believe they even asked

Soothsayer1 · 28/12/2022 17:51

We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc
I cant help feeling you (inadvertently) slipped up here...
imo the 'correct' response is:
'no absolutely not, I will not allow that'
but hard to say they when they are doing you a favour anyway....they put you on the spot with a bizarre & unacceptable request and (thinking on your feet) you did what most people would and made a polite excuse.
Did they choose to interpret it the wrong way and decide they didnt mind about the not fresh beds and lack of heating?
