Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

And if that was the case

there would be evidence because it would be stipulated in the… contract

LadyEloise1 · 28/12/2022 16:37

OMG the cheek of your neighbours. Thank goodness your bil and mum can check the house.

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/12/2022 16:40

I’m absolutely speechless at this. Beyond cheeky

LadyBiker · 28/12/2022 16:41

I really hope there are no unwanted guests in your home, op

HotChoxs · 28/12/2022 16:42

IncessantNameChanger · 28/12/2022 16:27

Our neighbours usually tell us when they are going away and leave a key. The house has been empty all Christmas and they didn't mention it this time. Maybe they thought we would move in!

But I do feel a bit paranoid now

It's fine if neighbours aren't complete CF's like this lot. And CF is an understatement and C does not stand for Cheeky!!

red4321 · 28/12/2022 16:45

The idea of giving people house keys and my alarm code that I’m “on friendly terms” with and very rarely meet for occasional drink… when I have children??!!

An alternative perspective as we're on friendly terms with our neighbours but more a wave than seeing each other (and we also have kids). We were burgled just before Christmas and it took us an hour to get home once the alarm company called.

In that hour, our neighbours opened our front door to let in the police and the dog handlers so they had a hope of catching the burglars (we have a monitored alarm) without forcing entry in another way. Turned off our alarm so it wasn't annoying everyone. And could answer questions on our behalf until we got back.

I was very grateful that they had a key and our alarm code. If I'd been abroad, I'd have been doubly grateful.

7eleven · 28/12/2022 16:46

I hope they don’t walk in and a random man is sitting on the sofa in his pants 🙀

And that’s great. It saved you a lot of inconvenience.

I am talking about giving people you hardly know and certainly don’t know all the people who come to their house and may have access to your keys…. Being able to enter your property and harm your children whilst you all sleep or harm your teen daughters (or sons) whilst they’re home alone

What’s incredible about your situation is that the police turned up well within an hour of being called to a house burglary!

hashbrownsandwich · 28/12/2022 16:50

@OP you know you're going to have to get your mum to sniff the sheets don't you?

Ursuladevine · 28/12/2022 16:50

And in that hour they’d already brought in dogs? For a house burglary???

BloomingXmas · 28/12/2022 16:51

I will be very disappointed if no one is in the house 😁

JoanOfAllTrades · 28/12/2022 16:52

I would actually go to the lengths of buying a pay as you go SIM specifically to phone the police and say that you know the owners of such and such house are away for XX time and you’ve seen the lights on and are concerned there’s been a burglary!

Actually, in the UK I believe you can still phone crimestoppers anonymously so I’d do that.

But either option works for me!

And even if someone has the housekey for emergencies only, it is still a crime to enter the house using the key. And the people who are found in the house will have to produce identification and will be asked why they are there and where you are and do they have permission etc., etc.!

Also they will be asked for contact details for you and it will look very suspicious when they don’t know how to contact you or even what your full names are! (I’m assuming that your neighbours won’t have briefed their relatives with “their names are Tom and Barbara Good and their mobile numbers are xxx).

It will be interesting to see how long they will end up staying in the police station cells for!

Mummieslncorporated · 28/12/2022 16:52

Yikes! I hope everything is as it should be, but I'm not optimistic about it...

Benjispruce4 · 28/12/2022 16:55

Sounds hellish. Get your key back and change the locks!

I agree but it's sad that these rare CF's spoilt it for everyone else. We'd all be better off if we could rely on our neighbours just to be decent humans. Can't believe it's so much to ask.

What’s incredible about your situation is that the police turned up well within an hour of being called to a house burglary!

We do have a monitored alarm but they were there less than 5 minutes after it went off. With three units and tracker dogs plus full forensic job and house to house enquiries the next day.

I know they get a lot of stick but credit to the police for this one, they were amazing. I also owe my poor neighbour a bottle of nice wine!

Stravaig · 28/12/2022 16:57

Has now appeared on Birmingham Live (found via MSN News, via another thread also featured).

AngelontopoftheTree · 28/12/2022 16:58

I can't believe people would be this cheeky, although if there's one thing MN had taught me it's that anything is possible! I hope your house is as locked up as you left it!

On another thread I’m on, on the 20th December 2022 you actually say “I have never been a Victim of crime”

it would seem you jinxed that unfortunately by saying it

This is seriously concerning that 3 police units and tracker dogs turned up within five mins of a house alarm going off.

Surely there was a better use of all the resource, without even knowing the situation

It can happen - in the town where I live there was a case a few weeks ago where someone reported seeing two youths breaking in to burgle their neighbour's house. Police turned up with a dog, no-one was there but the dog led police from the burgled house to the home of a well-known local teenage reprobate. When the police and dog showed up on his doorstep he was so shocked that he confessed and also gave them his mate's name! 🤣 They were both in my DD1's school year and she thought them getting nicked like that was hilarious.

Really hope OP's house is OK but the neighbours not answering her is very suspicious.
Some posters seem very adamant about not sharing keys. My DDs have keys to our house, my DSis has one but also my cleaner. Occasionally I give one to my NDN for cat-feeding but otherwise she doesn't have one.

Yes
a crime was reported

this was a house alarm going off
3 police units
dog trackers
within 5 mins of alarm going off

Topseyt123 · 28/12/2022 17:02

Blimey, cheeky fuckery from your neighbours right there! It sounds suspiciously like they have already used your house, though I hope I am wrong there.

I do hope that your Mum and BIL find all as it should be and are able to get the key back.

Hotsweatymomspagetti · 28/12/2022 17:03

Invest in a ring doorbell, that will put your mind at rest for any future issues…not much help now (sorry)
