Name changed for this as my other threads are quite outing. Sorry its long!

Me and partner are away for a few days over Christmas, our next door neighbour has a spare key for our house for emergencies (we have their spare house key as well). We are not close friends just normal neighbours, They have had family visiting over Christmas/new year. On boxing day they text me and asked if some of their family could sleep in our home as more of the family had arrive unexpectedly! We said no because beds need changing and heating not on etc.(also I dont want strangers in my home)Well since then we have had text after text asking over and over again! I have also repeatedly tried to ring them but they are not picking up! The last one was very late last night (I was already in bed asleep)asking again and saying the family who they want to stay's car has broken down! I feel like packing up here and going home now as so worried they will just use my house anyway! I dont have any friends or family nearby who can check on my home. My partner has said they surely wont just use our house but I'm not sure they wont. 😥

Me too! I’m on pins here waiting for the next update 🙈😂

Me too. Lol

If they have let their relatives/friends sleep in your house then that it the height of cheeky fuckery.
I’d send them a bill for cleaning and heating. And also a locksmith as I wouldn’t put it past them to have copied the key for their relatives.
I Would also mention it to the biggest gossip I knew in the area.

Have they responded to your texts and calls today OP?

I'd say they realised that you're on to their tricks and they are doing a massive clean up operation (I really really hope I'm wrong here) and they can't hear their phones ringing and beeping with notification alerts due to the sound of the vacuum being on.

Fingers crossed that they are just out at a play or something and have their phone on silent.

BIL has just picked up mum and sister up and they are on their way to my house. The plan is just to let themselves in using mums key, check everything is ok and go and knock on next door neighbour and ask for the spare key (using excuse sisters working in nearby town and needs to pop back ) hopefully everything will be ok....if not mums ready to really give it to them! So worrying 😪I am just getting over a broken leg and this holiday was ment to be a nice break away x

That’s good. Although you don’t need an ‘excuse’ to get your own key back.

No reply to my text this morning, I have not texted or called since. My partner has a online blog. Nothing reveling or address etc. Its to do with his hobby (bird watching...I know😂) and he has been posting about the trip we were on today as next door neighbours husband knows about the blog and sometimes looks at it so knows we aren't on our way home anything soon.

Fingers crossed everything is OK @Castleontheisland

MeridianB · 28/12/2022 16:03

Agreed - no excuse needed. Does your neighbour know your family?

Whats the plan if there’s evidence of cuckoos in your house?

Foodieasfuck · 28/12/2022 16:03

Our neighbours once used our garden table & chairs whilst we were away. The only reason I found out is because the base of the table was covered in food.
we left our keys in case of emergency and they helped themselves from our garage.

I normally read and move on, today I have done two loads of laundry and refilled the dishwasher, stripped the carcass of the turkey and hoovered and caught the dog helping himself to dog treats from under the tree and I am still peppering at the audacity of them.

Even if they haven't (though I strongly suspect they have) to keep asking is beyond the pale.😡

Upyoursxmas · 28/12/2022 16:10

Oooh can you imagine the building rage in that car on the way over. If the house is empty they will be shocked!

InFiveMins · 28/12/2022 16:11

YANBU. Unbelievably cheeky of them!

poefaced · 28/12/2022 16:15

Wow, change your locks asap!

Agapornis · 28/12/2022 16:16

Can I please have a link to the blog? Keen birder 🤓 fingers crossed there's no cuckoos in your house
(got a lifer on boxing day - little auk 😎)

Sunsnowsun · 28/12/2022 16:18

Waiting for the update, hope they have not used your house

UnpackThisMess · 28/12/2022 16:22

This is crazy!

TitsInAbsentia · 28/12/2022 16:23

I really hope they haven't been in there, that's a total line crosser 😡

IncessantNameChanger · 28/12/2022 16:27

Our neighbours usually tell us when they are going away and leave a key. The house has been empty all Christmas and they didn't mention it this time. Maybe they thought we would move in!

But I do feel a bit paranoid now

Tigerstripe20 · 28/12/2022 16:29

Surely they don’t think they could get away with it?
It is quite easy to tell if someone has been in your bed 🤢and washing the sheets would give it away unless they used your washing powder/ liquid.
get yourself a Ring doorbell or cheap camera and change the locks.
Apparently, the people who used to own my house gave their key to the neighbour who used to spend hours in the house nosing checking the house when they went away.
Thankfully ,we had a new door as soon as we moved in .

My in laws used to have a holiday home abroad and the neighbour had keys. DH and I got cheap last minute flights once and as we pulled on the drive the neighbour came over and said 'oh, your mum never said you were coming'. He told us they had family staying - we knew they only had 2 bedrooms and wondered where they were all going to sleep. We're sure they were going to use our villa - and then wondered if they'd done it before as MIL usually told him when people were going.

This happened to us - our friends loaned us their holiday home in France for which some local friends (lets call them Brian and Cath) had a key as they used to do cleaning and maintenance for our friends (paid). When we arrived, Brian told us that we couldn’t have access for a couple of days as the property was occupied and we could get B&B in the village. Turns out of course that they were letting the house and making money on it without permission from our friends. They were pretty brazen.

anonacfr · 28/12/2022 12:15

Add me to the list of people who hold neighbours' keys.
2 of our neighbours (all on friendly terms, very occasional drinks together) have asked us to keep their keys just in case. One has an oversensitive alarm so she's also given me her alarm code in case it goes off and I need to reset it.
Oh, the parties I could have at her house... 😁

The idea of giving people house keys and my alarm code that I’m “on friendly terms” with and very rarely meet for occasional drink… when I have children??!! Knowing that they could well prove to be putting on a front OR someone could be in their home and have access to my keys who would be tempted to break in and, best case scenario steal something, worst case, harm my teenage daughter whilst home alone… is seriously unfathomable to me

can you send some friends to check?

Ursuladevine · 28/12/2022 16:33

If you hire a car for Monday - Friday, but the hire car company don't collect it til the following Monday, it doesn't mean you can use it over the weekend too!

so this hire car is on your property. For a weekend. But not actually your responsibility in any shape or form because the contract of your hire runs from Monday to Friday? How the heck does that work?
