Neighbour taking liberties

I’m just so angry right now. I live on a busy new build estate and parking is a luxury. We have one parking space big enough for one car. DH and I were away over Christmas and mentioned to our next door neighbours, who are elderly, that they could park in it to save them from finding a space. DH told them we would be back Boxing Day.

We arrived home last night and a totally different neighbour has parked there! We then couldn’t park in our own space and we ended up scouring the street trying to find a space and had to unload the car with several trips!

I’m annoyed because the elderly neighbours have obviously told these neighbours that they could park there (we NEVER said anyone else could - we were trying to be nice to the elderly neighbours). Also, it’s been 24 hours and the car is still there! We’ve had to find another space on the road AGAIN - I’m angry because these other neighbours have my mobile number and I thought they would’ve at least text me to ask if they could use my space, and also because the car still hasn’t moved.

DH has been over to the other neighbours and they aren’t in, and I’ve text them and put it nicely, but bluntly, “move your car” - but no answer.

DH says it’s fine and that I’m getting upset over nothing, but I think both sets of neighbours are being CFs!

So please, shall I take a chill pill or would you be angry too?!

@DobbyTheHouseElk @Notforbeef near me too! Absolutely horrific and heartbreaking for the poor children.

I posted on here afterwards exactly as Dobby said about developers holding responsibility for squeezing those wretched houses in and not providing adequate parking. But my post was pulled.

I would block them and then refuse to move the car for a few hours .

What a shame you didn't nip to the shops, buy one of the locking bollards and install it behind his car while you were waiting for him to deign to show his selfish face! However, as you didn't do it then, I would definitely do it now, as while you may have your house number painted on the space, there's actually nothing to stop some other CF parking there while you're out, and next time you may have no idea whose car it is, so to my mind, better safe than sorry, particularly as the posts aren't that expensive or difficult to install.

Parking on someone else’s drive isn’t illegal. However blocking a car from accessing the road is.
by blocking him in you are breaking the law. While this law sucks it is what it is and you could find yourself in trouble

Sorry my mistake…
While what he did is unlawful, it’s a civil matter and police wouldn’t respond. If it continued you’d have to take him to court for trespass.
however blocking someone (even if they’re parked illegally) could result in a police visit and fine. Unfair I know.

Generally, given half a chance, people will be cheeky f*ers. I haven’t read all the posts, but have you put a note on their windscreen?

Stewball01 · 29/12/2022 08:13

Good idea, to block them in. If it was me I'd be going barmy. Good luck.

Poodles23 · 29/12/2022 08:53

When the car eventually gets moved have one of those lockable stumps fitted at the end of your drive so no one else can park there.

Surely parking on someone else's drive is trespass?

That's the last time I pay extra for a house with off road parking.

Harmonypus · 30/12/2022 08:57

I've only read the first page of messages so someone has probably already said this but it's illegal to block someone from being able to gain access to the highway, so if you block them on a driveway or in your parking space, you could get a knock on the door from the police.
I'd be texting the owner of the car saying you have given them plenty of opportunity to apologise, explain themselves and remove their car that has been parked in your space without permission but as of the day after your first message you will be invoicing them £15 per day for parking there until it's removed. And I'd definitely follow through with it too, that way you'll never have them parking in your spot again!

Harmonypus · 30/12/2022 08:58

Parking on someone's driveway is trespass but it's a civil matter, not a police matter.

ortonym · 30/12/2022 13:18

For clarity re trespass :

Trespass alone is a matter of civil law, which means that the police have no power to arrest you for it; police may nonetheless help landowners remove trespassers from land. Trespass is entering – or putting property on – land that belongs to someone else, without their permission.
