Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss actually that's not the definition of an acronym.

According to the dictionary:

An acronym is a word or name formed from the initial components of a longer name or phrase. Acronyms are usually formed from the initial letters of words, as in NATO, but sometimes use syllables, as in Benelux.

That appears to be Wikipedia's definition, not the dictionary definition which is: an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g. ASCII, NASA ).

Clymene · 27/12/2022 11:37

You're talking absolute bollocks now @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss

Also corona is a Mexican beer. Pronounced Corona, not coroner.

I don't understand why you are bringing Mexican words into the argument - of course, any words might be pronounced differently around the world.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:39

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss it's also the definition from Miriam Webster, dictionary.com and the OED.

EnyoClytemnestra · 27/12/2022 11:39

Hbh17 · 27/12/2022 10:52

He is BU to be mentioning this at all. Don't think I've even used the word for the best part of 2 years, as it's very tedious and now completely irrelevant.

No, it is not irrelevent. Still very prevalent, nasty and contagious, and will continue to be as long as people continue to arrogantly dismiss it

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 27/12/2022 11:40

My little bugbear this, the word 'Covid' is a split digraph. The vowel 'o' becomes a long sound as 'o' and 'i' are split by the consonant v.

They teach it in year one, tell them the vowels are too chatty so have to be split up

Too many splits😄

ladygindiva · 27/12/2022 10:44

Yanbu. Ltb. Mine says " tuthpaste" instead of toothpaste. It's a real problem.

Oh dear god. I do this. WHY?! No idea. I'm from the Midlands, other people round here don't say it; parents are northerners, not from there either! Now I just avoid saying it because I remember which one is weird!

Kalasbyxor · 27/12/2022 11:41

Honestly?😂
I get that differences in pronunciation of common phrases and words might be noticeable if you live in a very homogenous bubble lacking in diversity, but seriously, why would you let this bother you?
In my work, I regularly hear it referred to as CO-vid, covvid, c19, the virus, corona, corona-VI-rus -I know what is referred to in all cases, which is what matters.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 11:41

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:39

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss it's also the definition from Miriam Webster, dictionary.com and the OED.

OED says:
A group of initial letters used as an abbreviation for a name or expression, each letter or part being pronounced separately;

purpledalmation · 27/12/2022 11:43

Covvid sounds more like the crow family. Corvid. It's Covid

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:43

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss it also says this:

2. A word formed from the initial letters of other words or (occasionally) from the initial parts of syllables taken from other words, the whole being pronounced as a single word (such as NATO, RADA).

Which you're conveniently overlooking 🤣

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2022 11:43

DMIL’s friend calls it Covis to rhyme with Hovis.

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 27/12/2022 11:43

We just call it the bloody Nora virus......😛

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 11:44

According to the WHO COVID stands for 'Coronavirus disease' not identity ..... www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/technical-guidance/naming-the-coronavirus-disease-(covid-2019)-and-the-virus-that-causes-it#:~:text=Naming%20the%20coronavirus%20disease%20(COVID,Regions

Lots of acronyms contain the first 2 letters of the word like that as well, it's not always just the first initial. Eg WIFI - WIreless FIdelity.

Accyd · 27/12/2022 11:44

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

Well, you are wrong.

FuntCase · 27/12/2022 11:44

Take it pedants corner. Who gives this much of a fuck about pronunciation? This is why regional words and pronunciation were classed as “lower” and “common” for ages because of twatty snobbery like this.

Clymene · 27/12/2022 11:45

You missed the second part of the definition

. A word formed from the initial letters of other words or (occasionally) from the initial parts of syllables taken from other words, the whole being pronounced as a single word (such as NATO, RADA).

Ie Benelux.

I mentioned Corona as that's how it's pronounced in English. Not when speaking Spanish Grin

pocketvenuss · 27/12/2022 11:47

@planefullofotters It’s not short for coronavirus. Covid is a TYPE of coronavirus.
Co - Corona
Vi - Virus
D - Disease
Covid -19 is the name for the specific corona virus and it's name has been derived from 'Corona Virus Disease

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 11:47

Yep!

Boomboom22 · 27/12/2022 11:48

But syllables!
Co vid
Cor o na or Co ro na, I'd say the second as the first is like coroner n9t corona virus.
Co vert
Cov en tri

electricmoccasins · 27/12/2022 11:48

COVID stands for Co[orona] Vi[rus] D[isease]

MsFannySqueers · 27/12/2022 11:48

Oh I give you my DH who pronounces ‘data' as dar-tar and ‘vinyl’ with the vin part as rhyming with gin. It makes my teeth itch!

pocketvenuss · 27/12/2022 11:49

@thelobsterquadrille yes Covid 19 is one form of Corona virus but the name Covid is derived from Corona Virus Disease. Whether it is 'short for' or 'derived from' is semantics.

Rainbowshit · 27/12/2022 11:49

My DH watched some expert on YouTube who pronounces it like that.

It grates on me every time.
