Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

The 'Co' in Covid comes from the word Coronavirus.

I know 🙄

That still doesn't mean COVID is short for Coronavirus.

COVID is just shorthand, like AIBU or GCSE.

The 'Co' part of 'Covid' is short for Coronavirus. I'm aware the whole word isn't short for 'Coronavirus' as there is no 'D' in 'Coronavirus', but the 'Co' is short for 'Coronavirus' in the name of the disease, and 'Coronavirus' is not pronounced 'Co - ronavirus'.

AIBU and GCSE are acronyms, so not an accurate comparison.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:25

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss yes, but you don't always pronounce "Co" the same way no matter what - it depends on what comes after it.

You don't pronounce begging "beeging" just because it begins with "be".

Zib · 27/12/2022 11:26

It's not as if the dictionary tells us to pronounce it like coronation...

DH pronounces it "covvid"

Yanbu. Ltb. Mine says " tuthpaste" instead of toothpaste. It's a real problem.

Yes but saying tooth with a short 'uh' sound is most definitely the correct pronunciation!! Is it only us midlanders who say it like this ?

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:27

But COVID is an acronym too 🙈

As you keep saying, it stands for "Co[rona] V[irus] ID[entity] [20]19." it's not a shortened version of "Coronavirus".

SwedishEdith · 27/12/2022 11:27

Give (Govv?) used to say Covvid so that's enough reason in itself for it to make me clench up.

I'm surrounded by people who say tonn gue though for tongue 😧

What comes after it is irrelevant. Take the words 'Coventry' and 'Covert' for example.

Mirabai · 27/12/2022 11:28

I pronounce the online shop WoolOvers ‘Wool Lovers’. Because I thought WoolOvers sounded silly. Much to the hilarity of my family.

ladygindiva · 27/12/2022 11:28

Unicorntastic · 27/12/2022 10:53

That is a regional pronunciation though, i used to say it growing up in the Midlands and alternate between the 2 now

Ah yes, he is from the Midlands and I'm from the southwest so that makes sense. I might let him stay then. 🤣

It isn't an acronym because it isn't formed of initial letters.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:28

Coventry and Covert don't end in the same way, so I'm not sure that's a very good argument 🤣

Yes. It's weird. It's a tooth. Double o.

He is BU to be mentioning this at all. Don't think I've even used the word for the best part of 2 years, as it's very tedious and now completely irrelevant.

Yawn. You do know that keep posting to say how irrelevant Covid is to your life is as boring as others who are still obsessed with it?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 11:31

They both have an 'e' after the 'v'. If both words ended exactly the same way ... they would be the same word.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:31

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss yes it is 🤣

Co[rona] V[irus] ID[entity] [20]19.

It's right there!

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:32

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss but they don't end the same way - and are therefore pronounced differently 🙈

It's a play on pullovers I think.
But your way is nicer.

TikTOK is a good one.

I like meme - MEH-may - to wind up the young adults.

How are you meant to pronounce meme? I thought it was 'meem' (to rhyme with team), but someone else I know says 'mem' (to rhyme with men) 🤔🤔

LozzaChops101 · 27/12/2022 11:33

I work with someone who calls it connavirus. And he still talks about it all the time so he says it a lot.

Makes me homicidal.

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss yes it is 🤣

Co[rona] V[irus] ID[entity] [20]19.

It's right there!

If it was an acronym it would simply be CI19. An acronym is formed from the initial letters of other words - not the first two letters of a series of words.

Is it though? We're all home ill with it. It doesn't feel that irrelevant to us...

You are home ill with a now common virus! The rest is irrelevant really!

Hidingawaytoday · 27/12/2022 11:33

Meem. It would be mem if like the French même.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 11:35

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss actually that's not the definition of an acronym.

According to the dictionary:

An acronym is a word or name formed from the initial components of a longer name or phrase. Acronyms are usually formed from the initial letters of words, as in NATO, but sometimes use syllables, as in Benelux.

Clymene · 27/12/2022 11:37

You're talking absolute bollocks now @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss

Also corona is a Mexican beer. Pronounced Corona, not coroner.
