to get irrationally annoyed when people hijack threads to have conversations between themselves completely ignoring the OP

This has only happenned to me once but I see it happen on other threads too and it really gets my teeth gnashing. Someone starts a thread then two or three others give the OP a one word answer before launching into a conversation between themselves with injokes etc and then the whole thread end up being about them and not about the subject the OP originally brought up. I am a bit pre menstrual and probably a teeny bit irrational but I just think it is rude and wouldn't happen in RL.

OK, will go now after having my rant

I understand notalone. Hide Hide Hide.

notalone · 03/02/2008 18:16

Am cowering Maidamess!!! When will it be safe to return?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/02/2008 18:21

I think I do know what you mean notalone

like when people all pile in and start saying trip trap and stuff?

Maidamess · 03/02/2008 18:23

I meant hide the threads, not hide yourself!!

notalone · 03/02/2008 18:26

Thats it F & Z (though I do now know what Trip Trap means after lots of analysing before it finally clicked!). There are loads of threads where I just haven't got the foggiest what people are talking about and neither does the OP. I honestly don't object to people chatting though - thats what conversation is all about after all!

ItsNeverTooEarlyForPopcorn · 03/02/2008 18:26

It can make you feel excluded, this happened on one of my very first posts.

You just can't control the thread and the direction it takes.

notalone · 03/02/2008 18:27

Well I am a bit slow Maidamess!!! Have come out from my hiding place brushed myself off and am

OP posts:
notalone · 03/02/2008 18:29

Thats it Popcorn - as long as the OP / subject matter is at least briefly mentioned then its all good. Its just the in jokes that seem to go on and on that annoy and can make people feel ignored a bit

OP posts:
Habbibu · 03/02/2008 18:31

Dunno - I think of MN a bit like sitting round a huge table eating dinner - sometimes the conversation includes all diners, sometimes it hives off into other areas, and sometimes it all comes back. All round the same big table. Bothers me more at dinner in real life when you get cornered by someone and can't join in the big conversation - MN you get the best of both worlds!

notalone · 03/02/2008 18:39

Especially when that person has severe haltosis and wants to talk about the finer details of their bowel habits or something Habbibu!!!!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/02/2008 18:39

well if we are thinking of the same kind of thing then yes I do think it is rude and I feel uncomfortable watching it happen

but I still like CHATTING [stubborn]

LadyVictorianSqualor · 03/02/2008 18:46

I think it often depends on the thread, a really serious one rarely gets hijacked in this way, if it is serious you are mroe likely to get a message saying "oi blah blah want you over " so as long as it isnt disregarding the tone of the thread I dont see the problem.
Also people will still come onto the thread, read the OP and answer, even if a back to work thread has morhped into a chat about mooncups.

TaLcYonHerTodd · 03/02/2008 18:52

I agree with Franny

ZippiBabes · 03/02/2008 18:57

ZippiBabes · 03/02/2008 18:58

TaLcYonHerTodd · 03/02/2008 18:59

I can feel like a bit of an outcast if I haven't posted here for a while and haven't caught up with gossip news.

So my advice is - Keep posting and grow a thick skin because it's not meant as a personal slight.

I find it funny when someone posts on the wrong thread.

pointydog · 03/02/2008 20:55

no one sees your discomfort online. learn to be dogged

ItsNeverTooEarlyForPopcorn · 03/02/2008 21:21

Oh pointy - is that what you do on a weekend?

pointydog · 03/02/2008 21:27

hem hem. dogged

pointydog · 03/02/2008 21:27

adjective

ItsNeverTooEarlyForPopcorn · 04/02/2008 01:32

As opposed to the verb... (what Phil from Eastenders enjoys doing)?

I have a filthy mind.

expatinscotland · 04/02/2008 01:34

i don't just have a filty mind, i am a filthy mind .

sabaidii · 04/02/2008 12:57

yanbu, The peokple who do this are just rude. I think someof them feel they can do this because they hold a position of "seniority".

then there are those people who provoke the OP or poke fun, I can't stand those individuals either.

I say we ship them to Cuba!
