Ricky Gervais standup *potentially sensitive

Just been introduced to Ricky Gervais standup tonight. I've never been interested before as (apart from his interest I animal welfare) I can't stand the guy, but was gobsmacked at his 'farting at a baby's funeral' theme. Am I missing something or is this in hideously bad taste? I'm amazed no one has kicked off about it?

He offends everyone deliberately. Nothing is off limits. Personally I think comedy should push boundaries and should offend. A lot of comedy is really dull nowadays. Avoid him if you are sensitive.

Butterlover1 · 24/12/2022 23:29

Switch it off, you have no right to not be offended.

Tiggal · 24/12/2022 23:30

He once pointed out that a person has to be seriously entitled to expect to be able to go through life without ever being offended. I agree with him.

jetadore · 24/12/2022 23:31

Well bad taste is kind of his schtick isn’t it, so you can’t really complain can you?

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 24/12/2022 23:31

I find Mrs Brown's Boys offensive as it is complete dirge, but a lot of people like it.

Comedy is subjective. That's why it's great to have a remote control. If you don't like it, you can press stop/turn over.

Some of his stuff I don't find funny, some of it , I do.

LeggyLinda · 24/12/2022 23:40

I think he’s funny and intelligent. I enjoy him.
if you’re the kind of person who wants to be offended then you will be. But, IMO, nothing he says or does is deliberately offensive without there being a joke associated with it.

Many other comedians are bland but not funny.
Others are shocking but still not funny.

Gervais seems to hit the sweet spot where he is not excessively shocking, but far from bland and still seems insightful, funny and interesting.

All celebrities are twats obviously. But I give Ricky Gervais a little bit of leeway because he seems such a decent guy.

Anotherbloomingchristmas · 24/12/2022 23:44

Love watching him, he says he doesn't care but I think he's a decent guy.

DrManhattan · 24/12/2022 23:44

I like his comedy but it's not universally accepted. Stick to something more middle of the road.

AllOfThemWitches · 24/12/2022 23:46

Lol people have kicked off. I like him and I don't find flatulence or funerals funny.

TruckerBarbie · 24/12/2022 23:54

He's one of those to deliberately push boundaries, but I still winced a bit at his previous bit about kids with cancer. All the "I'll see you next year you little shit.... oh, no I won't actually" or however it went.

DuplicateUserName · 24/12/2022 23:57

I like a bit of Ricky and yes, sometimes his humour is offensive.

Horses for courses.

He offends me with a lot of what he says, but he makes me inadvertently cry with laughter as well, so whaddaya gonna do….?

After Life was about death and was also ground-breakingly well done.

JoyfulGirl · 25/12/2022 00:04

He seems like a complete prick, he’s nowhere near as clever as he seems to think he is, and some of his stuff I find pretty offensive and deeply unfunny. On the other hand, sometimes he’s hilarious.

OooScotland · 25/12/2022 00:04

I don’t think Ricky Gervais is particularly funny (If I had to kick off about a comedian it would be Jimmy Carr, but others love him so who am I to tell them they shouldn’t) I think comdeians have every right to make jokes that are in bad taste. That’s somethimes their thing. The sketch you pointed out doesn’t bother me, its not real - its a comedy routine, plus I value freedom of speech.

If you don’t like him, just don’t watch him. You can’t say he shouldn’t make jokes about something just because you find it upsetting.

I’m old enough to remember the stand-ups of the 1970’s. Now they were offensive.

Florenz · 25/12/2022 00:11

I don't like his stand-up, I don't think it's very funny. But I loved The Office and liked Extras. Stand-up comedy seems to be at a low ebb at the moment, very few genuinely funny ones around.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2022 00:24

I'm amazed no one has kicked off about it?

Loads of whining tossers kick off about everything he does.

Adults just switch off comedy they don't link.

Afl · 25/12/2022 00:27

I love Ricky Gervais and went to see that show live.
I have been to my own baby's funeral and I didn't get offended.
It's humour, each to their own.

MillicentBystander2022 · 25/12/2022 00:57

Whatever you do, don't search Ricky Gervais jokes to offend people on YouTube.

saturnisturning · 25/12/2022 01:00

I like him

CheesyColeslaw · 25/12/2022 01:05

I think he's a smug, unfunny arsehole so I don't watch his shows. He can joke about whatever he likes though and lots of people find it funny. Each to their own.

WandaWonder · 25/12/2022 01:06

One thing I find with him and alot of other comedians is they take the step to say what a lot of us would think in certain situations, sometimes we would agree sometimes not

I am sick of this need to control what people say, not sure that is any better than the inappropriate thing in the first place

KrisAkabusi · 25/12/2022 02:03

As Jimmy Carr has frequently said, a joke about a bad thing is not the same as the bad thing. You don't find Gervais funny, so what? Don't watch him again. But don't try to stop other people from laughing at him.

WeAreAllLionesses · 25/12/2022 02:04

Don't go and see The Book of Mormon if you're offended by RG...
