Ricky Gervais standup *potentially sensitive

Just been introduced to Ricky Gervais standup tonight. I've never been interested before as (apart from his interest I animal welfare) I can't stand the guy, but was gobsmacked at his 'farting at a baby's funeral' theme. Am I missing something or is this in hideously bad taste? I'm amazed no one has kicked off about it?

Watch after life on Netflix . You'll completely change your mind about him .

The most touching, funny , good bump inducing series I've ever watched . It's absolutely genius. And you don't have to like him to appreciate its brilliance.

pompomdaisy · 25/12/2022 03:24

Oh please! It's not like he's some unknown comedian that you stumbled across. It's pretty old and widespread news that Ricky Gervais is offensive. Have you never watched his Golden Globe hosting?

I think he's a smug, unfunny arsehole so I don't watch his shows. He can joke about whatever he likes though and lots of people find it funny. Each to their own.

This is the kind of grown-up post I like!

I find him offensive and funny in equal measure. He deliberately picks divisive subjects - and he always delivers them well. Sorry, not sorry, but “HER penis” was genius.

He goes for controversial topics, but doesn’t (that I’ve seen) go for specific individuals.

DrunkOnHim · 25/12/2022 03:37

The trans stuff was very good.

He does lots for animal rights and says he loves animals more than most people. I get that...I like him.

I like that he has zero fucks to give.

Lasttraintolondon · 25/12/2022 03:49

He's excellent. Stop watching if you're offended and leave the rest of us to enjoy it.

Suzi888 · 25/12/2022 04:01

After Life was brilliant.
Some things I cringe at, but overall I love RG, he’s brilliant.

LegoBrick4 · 25/12/2022 04:20

I watched After Life & Derek & enjoyed both. Although I don’t think he has any acting skills, he’s one of those people who just plays himself. Idiot Abroad was brilliant with Karl Pilkington. RG’s just not funny doing stand up.

Msgrieves · 25/12/2022 04:32

I liked his awards ceremony speech, that was great. His latest special was great for truth telling, sadly still didn't raise a laugh.

Againstmachine · 25/12/2022 07:20

I don't mind him or Jimmy Carr.

I find a lot of comedy like Ant and Dec's shows or most sitcoms like browns boys offensive these days because they are so low bar they are offfensivly rubbish.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 25/12/2022 07:24

I do find him funny. I haven't watched the bit you're referring to but I don't think joking about laughing about farting at a highly inappropriate time is the same as laughing about an awful tragedy.

Also to whoever said he seems like less of a twat than most, I've met him a few times as I lived in the same town and he seems like a lovely chap. I listened to his early stuff and it seems like he did that very male thing of being a twat when he was younger and getting over himself a bit.

NutellaEllaElla · 25/12/2022 07:53

I think he's better than most comedians and I highly highly value free speech. I don't care if you're offended by a joke about farting at a funeral.

Divebar2021 · 25/12/2022 08:00

You can’t have a comedy world made up of Michael McIntyre can you?

He's hilarious
Her penis*

😂😂

He cracks me up, I think he's brilliant

UseAMuckySock · 25/12/2022 08:09

I think he’s great, I’m very difficult to offend but even I have been gobsmacked at a lot of the stuff he says - I like that, I like to see someone pushing MY boundaries. Same goes for Jimmy Carr.

MoggyMittens23 · 25/12/2022 08:09

Wow a lot of people very defensive over him! I can take or leave him. I find comedians who don’t need that offensive shock value to get people cracking up far more intelligent than him though I have to say.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 25/12/2022 08:11

I'm amazed no one has kicked off about it?

Some have. But most adults do understand that if they don't find someone funny, they don't watch.

fancyacuppatea · 25/12/2022 08:17

He's about as funny as a dose of the shits.
And always has been.

Josette77 · 25/12/2022 08:22

I think he's brilliant.

Rubyupbeat · 25/12/2022 08:22

Wow, you should see him live, his videos are watered down.
I love his humour.

You are very correct, his live shows are definitely for the easy offended.

poorbuthappy · 25/12/2022 08:27

I saw him last week on his Armageddon tour. Was 80 mins of crying with laughter with my head in my hands. He was brilliant.

gonetroppo · 25/12/2022 08:27

If looking for something else funny, try Trevor Noah, his latest is on Netflix and an earlier one, ‘afraid of (or alone in) the dark’ is really good.

I’ve seen 3 RG recorded stand up specials now. The first was very funny. The second one I didn’t bother watching all the way through. The latest was pretty good. I like After Life.

I love RG ‘market place /guitar lessons’ joke. A classic. (The one James Cordon told as his own).

I follow him on twitter too (haven’t looked at it in a while though). His love for animals is lovely.

Hawaii4 · 25/12/2022 08:33

He's hilarious. If you find him offensive just switch him off, we don't live in a police state.

SpicyFoodRocks · 25/12/2022 08:36

I don’t find him remotely amusing. Not because he is offensive. But because he is not funny. I do think it takes more intelligence to make people laugh without being offensive. Offending is the easy route to laughs as some find it hilarious.

He can joke about what he wants though. There is clearly a market for it.
