I don't want to start a UCM type thread but it just struck me how prety much everyone i saw at the shops earlier was foreign.

no one seemed to be speaking English at all.

OP posts:
MrsBick · 20/08/2008 17:55

i can understand what mamzon is saying.
i lived in dover when it was in the news alot about asylum seekers.

lots of my friends were czech and slovak- they all came over as families to escape persecution at home. i always felt safe in their area.

BUT there was another area of town where the council/immigration housed all the single young men from albania and that was terrifying.

they didn't have jobs , just used to sit around in groups of 10-20 and heckle any girls walking by. on the road leading to the train station.

they gave all the other non-english people in our area a really bad name and there was alot of bad feeling with 'dover people' feeling displaced.

Polish people cause cancer according to the DM, I heard...

CaptainFabioHiltsTheCoolerCat · 20/08/2008 18:01

Er, this is an old thread.

pagwatch · 20/08/2008 18:04

any reason for crawling back to feb for this?

Bored?

Tiramissu · 20/08/2008 18:39

Well, i left London and moved abroad and guess what? All my neighbors in this country/resort are British. And the locals complain about too many British here, who speak english and refuse to learn the local language, fish and chip everywhere, our local culture will disapear and blah blah same story everywhere.
And some of these British are still receiving child benefits while living here in their villa in Med.
British imigrating too. There are thousands coming over in the Med for a new life.
I still feel that the pros of people travelling and mixing are more than the cons (if any cons).

tiredemma · 20/08/2008 18:44

???? Why are 6 month old threads being hauled back up for discussion??

Overmydeadbody · 20/08/2008 19:00

and the point of bringing this thread up again shortywhateveryournameis?

MrsStig · 20/08/2008 19:08

Shorty84, Im presuming you don't represent the BNP, as they surely wouldn't want anyone as illiterate as you as a representative. I'm sure the Polish people in our office do earn the same as you. Indeed, they probably have a better command of the English language.

Go take your racism elsewhere.

G2B · 20/08/2008 19:32

The only thing that bothers me about this whole issue is that when DP went for a job,it was contracting, so it was just a meeting- and he was told no as the owner actually admitted that he knew 'immigrants' who would work for a lot less than minimum wage. I think that's atrocious. ALL people should be treated and paid the same and get a job on experience. Obviously, that is purely down to a ridiculous boss. I thought it was unfair on DP who had a lot of experience, and unfair on a poor man working for a tiny amount per hour (this is not London by the way, it's up north). I also heard the same story from another place nearby.

Also, I don't like that there's 'black music awards' why does it have to have black infront of it? I'd be just as annoyed if it was the 'white music awards' not rascist in any way and don't think race should be focused on really, people are people.

And I wouldn't be disappointed or surprised if people of all different cultures were in a shopping centre, people are people, I just don't care.

G2B · 20/08/2008 19:35

Oh sorry, just saw this is an old thread, whoops. I've also made the whopping error of only reading the first 3 pages .

roseability · 20/08/2008 20:37

fear, racism, prejudice

YABU

Aitch · 20/08/2008 20:48

for the record, i think it's MOBO. music of black origin. so not necessarily performed by black people.

G2B · 20/08/2008 20:49

Oh. I didn't realise. That's different then.

Aitch · 20/08/2008 20:51

yeah, from memory i think amy winehouse, whatsername joss stone and people like that have won them in the past.

Hecate · 20/08/2008 20:55

my husband says he's going to set up the MOWO awards (music of white origin) and see what happens
(He's black, btw, before anyone starts beating me with the racist stick! )

cluelessnchaos · 20/08/2008 20:56

Where the hell has this come from?

Remotew · 20/08/2008 20:57

Wonder why this thread has been resurrected!

Btw who is/was UCM? Been on a while so I will recognise the name.

As for the OP. I'm from a small town up north and went to London to visit a friend last year. TBH I was surprised that that particular part of London was 98% populated by ethnic minorities. On the high street on a busy Saturday afternoon we were the only natives. So I can understand how some natives can feel strangers in certain parts.

My friend said its changing because eastern europeans are moving so more white faces but everyone speaks their own language.

Just stating a fact, not trying to flame anything.

Hecate · 20/08/2008 21:08

ucm was a regular poster, who has now left mn due to the sharing of an opinion best not shared. I think she was not well at the time tbh and perhaps it could have been handled differently, but what's done is done.

chefswife · 20/08/2008 21:11

everywhere you go there are 'foreigners'. i was a 'foreigner' when i lived in London but for some reason not considered one because i was white and from Canada. i lived in Kilburn in London and quite frankly, miss it for its multicultural neighbourhood. embrace it. i do agree that one needs to learn the language of the country one is inhabiting and god knows i struggled with trying to understand dialects of English. sometimes i couldn't understand my own grandfather, who was Yorkshireman. i use to think Canada was multicultural but after living in London i realize it is just that we have many cultures living here and it is very segregated for the most part. the Native reserves are great examples of keeping one culture contained. any British immigrant to Canada after WWII is called a 'johnney come lately' which refers to coming to the new world after its been developed.

too have so many cultures living in one area is beneficial for breaking down ignorant barriers of each others cultures. religion is more of a problem than what country someone is from... but that should be left for another thread maybe.

Remotew · 20/08/2008 21:15

Thanks Hecate, so UCM was her name and not initials.

chefswife · 20/08/2008 21:16

and i whole-heartedly think its shameful that someone would hire foreign labour because they will work for less. standards need to set there. i guess that is the governments job or the people coming to England for work not to undersell themselves. they need to understand they are being exploited.

2shoes · 20/08/2008 21:29

bloody hell, I thought I had gone back intime. this is a very old thread, why dig it up?

Shorty84 · 21/08/2008 09:53

TO answer I didn't realise it was an old thread also no not part of the BNP but they get my vote JOKE! I am not a racist I am stating facts I know this will sound cliché but my Best friend is black and all 4 of my god children are black or mixed race. Also I spend most nights out in clubs that I am the only white person dancing to Bashment, Soco.

I was just pointing out that I can see her point. It can be very intimidating being surrounded by loads of people who are speaking a different language. I for one get on well with everyone in my office especially two South Africans. But I do not agree that they should get benefits for children that don't live with them and are in a whole different country especially when you see that some "foreigners" who have children in this country are unable to claim benefits even though they pay Tax and NI.

chefswife it is not about colour its about nationality I do not look at a black person and assume they are not British same with an Asian etc

I am unsure why the MOBO's have been brought into this because again it is not about colour but yes they do have white artists and the MOBO's is music awards for RnB etc

It is also well known that in Cambridge recently a girl went for a job interview at a strawberry factory and did not get the job as she could not speak fluent Polish look it up on BBC news if you don't believe me.

My only problem with Eastern Europeans is a large percentage of them speak perfect English and yet they still speak in there own Language also the ones that moan so much about how shit are country is how bad are food is how much they hate the English people these people drive me insane.

I really don't expect alot of you to understand as you do not live your day to day life's surrounded by foreign people I am sure if you did you would see why people feel this way I for one use to live in a town in Hertfordshire and when I moved to London it was a culture shock for me to see how many foreigners there actually are here also in most areas of London you will find that they live in large communities and you are not very welcome to walk thru these areas. Go to Finsbury park for the day and you will see that they have loads of different cultures and religions and see how they react to you walking thru there estate.
