I don't want to start a UCM type thread but it just struck me how prety much everyone i saw at the shops earlier was foreign.

no one seemed to be speaking English at all.

Very odd OP, haven't trawled through the rest of the thread although glanced at Shorty's interesting take on current affairs. Considering that national prejudice bestows an instant sense of superiority with no need to work for it or learn the complex realities, you'd think that more people would be up for it. It's such a comfortable easy thing to go for and provides instant gratification. But luckily it still seems to be largely the refuge of the simple-minded and dim. Thank heavens for that.

All I can say is, unless someone can prove they have only pure Saxon DNA, then they're probably a bit foreign, like me, and like the rest of us. So wherever we go we will always be surrounded by foreigners.

And if someone is only able to speak English, then they should have worked harder in school. The ability to speak other languages doesn't make someone foreign. Perhaps the fact that English people mutter about people talking other languages is the reason why we have such a reputation for monolingualism...

LadyThompson · 21/08/2008 17:46

If 'sitting on the fence' means reasonably and thoughtfully surveying the different potential viewpoints, rather than coming down dramatically and rather nonsensically on one particular side...I'm happy up here ta, Shorty

Though I think she has gone. Was she for real?

HAHA just thought Id ressurect it again.

I'm very surprised that it hasn't kicked off actually.

Mamazon · 23/08/2008 00:38

omg

who dug this up again? did i not get flamed enough first time round?

I would go read the latest entries but i don't think my poorly self could take it.

OP posts:
ConstanceWearing · 23/08/2008 10:10

We weren't flaming you Mamazon, honestly. It was actually someone agreeing with you who brought it up. (They got flamed though)

ConstanceWearing · 23/08/2008 10:11

Sorry if that sounded tactless.

hercules1 · 23/08/2008 10:31

No, it wasnt really someone agreeing with you. They were using your point to put forward their own racist views which were different from yours which werent racist.

Lovesdogsandcats · 23/08/2008 10:50

You know what, I know what OP means and I am not in any way shape form racist.
Groups of asians/carribean etc, often form communities, would we all agree with that? Well, they do that to feel a part of where they live.

So, why is it wrong for OP to want this too? Ie go out in their home town and feel a 'part of it'?

VictorianSqualor · 23/08/2008 14:10

I don't think mamazon's points were particularly racist...
Unlike some expressed on this thread.

vio · 23/08/2008 15:29

Interesting, unlike Mamazon, I am chinese, originally from Hong Kong, married an Englishman but we live in Scotland so when I do my food shopping, I am normally the only chinese or ( foreign as some consider me as ) person there..but honestly, I don't consider myself as foreign, (but again, I don't know and i cannot know what others see me as ), I consider myself part of the community.

It is important that people who live in the UK should learn the culture and speak the language..there are alot of people out there who move to the UK, make no effort, dont speak the language dont learn the culture and create their own 'community' which I have to say isn't something for me.

So i think Mamazon has a point there, it's probably a bit odd when you live in the UK but surrounded by people who don't speak English but again I ask DH why majority of British people don't speak a second language, his answer was 'we are lazy and expect everyone speak our language!' which is bad I suppose'

ConstanceWearing · 23/08/2008 15:46

Much better said, Hercules, and that is kind of what I meant. Sorry Mamazon.
