Pushchair fight on bus

Partygal · 19/12/2022 22:25

After picking my child up from her child minder today, I arrived the bus stop to find two women with buggies waiting.

Knowing that the driver wouldn’t let three of us on, I walked round the corner to the previous stop and got on there.

When it arrived at the next stop, sure enough only mum was allowed on - the other was told to wait 30 minutes for the next bus. I was screamed at and called a cunt and a queue jumper by one mum who tried to shove me off the bus.

I don’t think I did anything wrong, nor did the police when they turned up after being called by the driver.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

Part of me thinks that was quite clever of you and part of me thinks it was a dick move and you were sneaky and selfish. I agree with both sides of me tbh.

I think you should've folded your buggy. You did what you did fully aware that you'd be depriving someone of a place who had been waiting longer than you. The behaviour of the others that came after that clearly wasn't acceptable but I can understand why they were upset.

I think you were more in the wrong than the right basically.

I'd ban buggys from busses altogether myself. All too often selfish entitled mums refuse to allow wheelchair users on. It's disgusting. They'd soon be shouting if their child was a wheelchair user and they couldn't get on.

That’s a failing of the driver. It’s not up to passengers who can and can’t get in and wheelchair users have priority. Weird that you’d ban babies from being on buses!

CheesenCrackersmm · 19/12/2022 23:00

OP did not queue jump she formed another queue and joined the service earlier. Yes it is a technicality but I would have done the same thing.

OP saw a problem and devised a workaround with brainpower. Something all too lacking in todays society.

Bensteeth · 19/12/2022 23:01

Generally going to an earlier stop isn’t an issue, nor is going to an earlier stop to get a better seat etc. When you know it’s the difference between someone being able to board or not it becomes unethical imo. I don’t know what I think the solution is but I wouldn’t have been able to do that in good conscience.

You realised that the other DMs had been waiting longer than you, and deliberately manoeuvred to make sure that you took one of their spaces.

So they and their DC were waiting up to an hour in the cold, and you only waited a couple of minutes.

Pretty mean behaviour towards another DM. Especially as you didn’t use the time between stops to fold your pushchair.

But I guess if this is your regular route and also theirs, you may live to regret it.

---- this all the way.

I think it was a mean spirited thing to do, especially in this weather. You should have folded down your pram. Karma is a bitch though, and maybe you'll be wishing people were not as shitty as you if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

These replies are funny. OP, had you come here and asked 'wibu to scream at, shove and call another mum a 'cunt' because she walked to a different bus stop' you'd get the same posters telling you you were indeed unreasonable. They just do it for the sake of it.

Or its because its possible for both sides to be in the wrong.

supersonicginandtonic · 19/12/2022 23:01

You say the police didn't speak to you? Yet you were the one supposedly assaulted? I call lies!! They would have 100% spoken to you

zen1 · 19/12/2022 23:02

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what you did. They could have gone a bus stop earlier if they’d have been so inclined. I often do this so I can avoid crowded bus stops (though I don’t have a buggy any more!).

Busybutbored · 19/12/2022 23:02

I'm curious ... what would people think if OP did this to them? Would she still be clever?

Yes wheelchairs have priority. You honestly think that would bother mums who fight over the buggy space? 🤣🤣🤣

@SamuelDavies how can you tell this from appearance? 🤔

Tessasanderson · 19/12/2022 23:02

Clever but underhand. What goes around come around. How would you feel if someone intentionally fucked around with you and your child’s day on purpose?

DuplicateUserName · 19/12/2022 23:02

Partygal · 19/12/2022 22:55

I don’t know what the police said because they took the other woman off the bus with her mate, and spoke to them on the pavement.

How long was she on the bus for after assaulting you?

Maskedpotato · 19/12/2022 23:02

How long did the police take to arrive?

ladycarlotta · 19/12/2022 23:03

either one of those other mums could have walked to the previous stop, as literally anyone can at a bus stop. It's not queue jumping given that the option was open to any one of you.

Anyway, people get on and off buses all the time. There are too many variables to predict! It might have had no buggy room left for you at the earlier stop, or two buggies might have alighted at their spot, making room for them. you weren't guaranteeing a spot for yourself nor were you in control of whether there would be space for them. You were just maximising your chances. You should have folded if you could though.

I think banning them is harsh, saying they have to be folded would be more reasonable.

It's up to the bus driver to ask parents to fold down buggies. One could argue that a young baby in a pram that was "there first" is just as entitled to the space as the wheelchair user. You don't know if mum is disabled and would have a hard time folding/unfolding the pram.

Guess what. Children are part of society and belong in it. The animosity towards mothers and children across all parts of society is horrendous.

I’d think I should have thought of that first.

And I’d fold my buggy.

I somehow missed the bit about the police at first - did that REALLY happen?

supersonicginandtonic · 19/12/2022 23:05

@SamuelDavies wrong! How judgemental are you! You have no idea of their backgrounds 🙄

Soakitup37 · 19/12/2022 23:05

I’d have thought it was dickish of you (especially given you knew what would happen and could have helped prevent it) but I wouldn’t have kicked off, I’d have wished you a horrible day in my head and got over it

Anotherbloomingchristmas · 19/12/2022 23:06

50 years ago all the mums had enormous pushchairs and must have travelled on buses.
I think there’s too many ridiculous regulations now.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 19/12/2022 23:06

JoyBeorge · 19/12/2022 23:02

Um….it doesn’t matter if it bothers them or not, they don’t have priority. If they’re in a position where they’re ‘not letting wheelchair users on’ then the driver is failing at their job. I highly doubt this even happens anyway. I HAVE known mums with buggy’s to be kicked off to let a wheelchair user on though.

Fail to see what the laughing face are for - nothing you have said is remotely amusing.
