Sick dog - advice needed

Small dog has thrown up after every meal for the past 3 days. She’s very quiet, barely moving. It’s undigested food but sometimes many hours after eating. She’s no appetite today and has only eaten a carrot and a handful of food (which she then brought back up in its entirety 2 hours later).

no bile, only puking food. No diarrhoea.

7 years old.

does it warrant OOH vet? She hasn’t kept anything down (other than water) for 3 days. Awful farting too. DH reluctant to call OOH saying I should just take her tomorrow

Personally I would go in the morning. It's only 12 hours as long as her breathing is ok and no other symptoms but I'm pretty laid back generally when it comes to the vet

AlmostAJillSandwich · 18/12/2022 20:21

Why have you waited this long?! Sounds like a blockage, either eaten something inedible and plugged her digestive tract, or something like a twisted bowel etc meaning nothing can get through. Either way it is very serious and it could kill her. Go, NOW!

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 18/12/2022 20:21

I'm also not one for rushing to the vet but 3 days not keeping anything down I'd be worried there's a blockage somewhere poor thing. Definitely vets tomorrow

ScreamingInfidelities · 18/12/2022 20:22

Get your dog to the vet right now. I can’t believe you’ve waited this long!

SpotOnMyBot · 18/12/2022 20:22

Yes go now. If you had a dog that was v good at stealing and eating things, you probably would have gone already as this is often how blockages present as @AlmostAJillSandwich says

Workerbeep · 18/12/2022 20:23

Yes I would contact your OOH veterinary surgeon.

Theluggage15 · 18/12/2022 20:25

When my dog had a blockage he couldn’t keep even water down and was clearly in pain, lots of stretching etc. But yours could still possibly have a partial obstruction. 3 days is a longtime with no food, I would definitely call out of hours for advice.

wheresmymojo · 18/12/2022 20:25

Yes, I would have already taken her.

Zanatdy · 18/12/2022 20:26

Absolutely yes

CrotchetyQuaver · 18/12/2022 20:27

I'd call OOH for that, I wouldn't want to wait until morning.

SupposeItDoesnt · 18/12/2022 20:27

I’m a vet, she needs to go tonight - straight away. She could be gravely unwell

Whatmarbles · 18/12/2022 20:28

As someone else has said, it could be a blockage which is serious.
I would ring your vet and do what they suggest.

Gliere · 18/12/2022 20:28

oh no :(

Is she constipated?

I’ve had OOH vet before for similar (dog ate trim, including Velcro, around a bib it turned out) and they gave him something to help him pass it.

It is only 12 hours until normal working hours now so I would look to ring first thing in the morning but stay with her through the night in case she gets worse.

Gliere · 18/12/2022 20:29

Oh good - glad you’ve had better advice now!

NoSquirrels · 18/12/2022 20:30

If in doubt, call the OOH vet. A phone call won’t cost you anything but will either a) give you peace of mind to wait till morning or b) know it’s the right thing to take her in.

I think she’ll need to be seen. Don’t wait til morning.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 18/12/2022 20:32

Poor baby. Take her tonight, she could get much worst really quickly.

Newuser82 · 18/12/2022 20:33

I'd have taken her sooner also. Definitely don't wait until tomorrow. Sounds like some sort of obstruction. Is she a chewer?

She should have been takento the vet, long before now. I would ring the OOH straight away.

Thesearmsofmine · 18/12/2022 20:37

Goodness she should have been seen before now. Poor thing.

helppleaseee · 18/12/2022 20:43

I'd at least phone and they will advise you further, dogs are very good at masking when they are extremely ill so I would probably be taking her in rather than waiting any longer.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 18/12/2022 20:51

My spaniel did this earlier this year and turned out to be a blockage. Sadly not a cheap operation.

keepcalm11 · 18/12/2022 20:52

I'm not an experienced dog owner but if she's barely moving I would ring the vet now. I hope everything's Ok 💜

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 18/12/2022 20:54

Get your dog to the vet. Mine presented like this and it was a blockage, she needed immediate surgery. Thank goodness for insurance, it was very nearly 4 figures!

3ormoredogs · 18/12/2022 20:54

Why does everyone always wait until this time on a night before deciding it’s urgent? Genuinely confused why nobody ever panics at 10am rather than when night shift kicks in!

JoyBeorge · 18/12/2022 20:55

If you hadn't said that she hasn't kept anything down for 3 days I may have said wait til the morning, but that isn't just a minor detail.
