They don't have to be all A's for the joke to work, no, but it would be more obvious at first glance that he'd gone down in only 1 subject if 'His' were the only D. Otherwise u have to compare them all column to column to get the info.

Managed to get it after about 5 minutes, ar leas and using the clue of the history grade. Not funny though.

Surely it's good if it makes you think? Gary Larson's jokes are similar.

If it had been presented as a puzzle or mind bender I might have got it but as a joke it went over my head and didn’t tickle a funny bone.

You need two grades to see if they have changed. Gone up, stayed the same or GONE DOWN.

I also didn't understand columns 1 to 4 and thought they were results for tests or exams on 2 different topics in the subjects. But termly grades seems more likely now you mention it. I had to Google the song lyrics and that and the hints here helped be get it. I don't find it at all funny though.
