To ask the bed in front to keep it down?

There's a baby in the bed opposite with their mum and dad

They are playing something really loud of their telly they've rented, or phones. I don't know which

Trouble is, it's not just loud. It's frightening me. It's a TV series I've seen bits of before and it frightened me/freaks me out

Would I be unreasonable to ask a nurse to get them to keep it down?

It's just my baby daughter on the ward with me, otherwise. No other patients

AIBU? Blush

If it's a children's ward they shouldn't be watching something like that.
Talk to the nurse again. Point out it's not just the noise but the programme is making you uncomfortable. The nurse (or whoever is most senior) needs to tell them to switch it off.

If it's a paediatric ward not a postnatal ward, you can't do that. Unfortunately he has the right to be there.

Why is is unfortunate that fathers have a right to be on a hospital ward with their children?

TrentCrimm · 16/12/2022 16:44

YWNBU to ask them to turn it down, but it doesn't sound like you've done that? You probably should.

They are being very inconsiderate, but if it's only the nurse (who is in and out) has asked them, but you're across the ward saying nothing, they're probably thinking you're not fussed. Just tell them to turn it down a bit as it's disturbing you.

To be fair, I’d be the same with Eastenders.

Now, that would push me over the edge.

Needmorelego · 16/12/2022 16:48

@itwas if they were watching something with loud sex scenes would that be ok for a children's ward.
Sorry but it's a children's ward. Everything going on in there should be age appropriate.
I stayed with my daughter for 2 weeks on a children's ward.
The ward had 'quiet time' after lunch and 'sound off' from 7pm (you could still watch stuff if you had headphones).

category12 · 16/12/2022 16:59

Could you ask them to use headphones? It's so inconsiderate to have something blasting out in a shared space.

Wetblanket78 · 16/12/2022 17:00

At our local hospital on the bedside TV's you can only hear the TV if you have headphones on. Might be different on children's ward. They have to sanitize the headphones between each patient because of covid.

But last time my son was in hospital on HDU ward there were no patient TV's. There was only one TV on the whole ward the woman across from us had it on all the time quite loud. She admitted she wasn't watching it just liked the sound in the background. When it got to 11pm on the first night all lights turned off TV still on woman fast asleep I turned it off myself. I asked on the last night as well as son couldn't sleep but there was also an elderly man in the bay at end of life care kept asking for help. They wouldn't have heard him over the noise of the TV. I had to keep pressing the call button for him.

Hollowgast · 16/12/2022 17:01

It can't be that terrifying if they're letting the kid watch it? It's unlikely to be The Walking Dead.

It's a tiny baby (fairly new baby by the sound of the cries)

Sorry, pressed send too quickly. Should have added that whatever the hell it is, the parents are morons and hugely inconsiderate.

ladywithnomanors · 16/12/2022 17:04

Tell a staff member that the noise is disturbing your baby.

Grown adults are allowed to be scared of certain films, etc.
Surely that's why lots of these kind of things are made - because some people enjoy being scared.
Some people hate it though and it unsettled them. That's totally normal.

Op - I'd get the nurses to ask them again.

Do you have headphones to block out some of it if they really won't.

lgcoopers · 16/12/2022 17:06

Right, so I put on my big girl panties and went over there

I said please would you turn the noise down? It is too loud for us

Man replied 'yeah we will try'

I said thanks it's just I can't settle and neither can my daughter

He sad 'Yeah we will try'

Is that actually true - both parents have the right to stay on the ward, not just one?

lgcoopers · 16/12/2022 17:07

Yes I did include a word there to annoy some people and give the 'ick' Grin

@musingsinmidlife Don't be ridiculous. That's obviously not what was intended by the comment.

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 16/12/2022 17:07

Recently in with teen dd the dm opposite had a Disney film on full blast. I started singing along.
She put the headset on her dd...
Hospital is for the poorly not a bloody Vue cinema..

waterrat · 16/12/2022 17:08

oh OP it's just awful - hospital wards are a seventh circle of hell.

It's such a shame you even have to ask - it should not be allowed on a ward to have something on loudly -

He is clearly a massive dick you may have to put your own headphones in and ignore.

Ugh how can he 'try'. It's not difficult to turn the bloody volume down. Be a shame if you tripped over the plug and accidentally pulled it out.

LaMereDuChat · 16/12/2022 17:09

It's Friday night. Time to crack open Spotify and listen to some techno at full volume, maybe with a dance around the bed in your nightie. You'll never see them again and it might scare them into silence!

@lgcoopers I get it now 😂

I used to watch it as a child and now watch it on prime. I cannot explain what it is, it's so badly filmed, the acting is atrocious and the special effects are really of it's time, but man it creeps TF out of me and I've had to turn it off sometimes

LivIoe · 16/12/2022 17:12

I think by this point I’d have the rage on and I’d walk in and unplug it.
