To ask what you think about dogs peeing on front grass

A bit of a petty/insignificant one but I'm interested on peoples views. I was walking my little dog yesterday when he pee'd on the edge of someone's grass (not right in the middle of it), she couldn't have been closer to the edge near the pavement & it was only for a second or two, it's also hard to avoid because the small patch of communal grass runs onto their front grass (I'd never intentionally let my dog run onto someone's grass). The owner came to the front door shouting at me about what my dog had done & seemed very snippy about it. I think she was expecting me to apologise but I thought it was a bit OTT so I just said something about not being able to control when my dog pees & walked off. AIBU to think she was a bit over the top or should I have apologised?

I have dogs myself so couldn't care less but you will find that some people are just anti-dog in general. My view is that if they are so precious about their grass, fence it off! It's grass. It's not going to be harmed. The neighbourhood cats will pee and poo on it, birds will poo on it, hedgehogs will poo on it. Life's too short to be so bothered about a bit of dog pee on the grass.

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 16/12/2022 15:05

Can I come and pee on your grass op?
How about my toddler or drunk husband?
Wild animals are completely different, you, another human being are actively choosing to put piss all over someone else's lawn. Dog piss isn't some kind of ambrosia. I don't want my front garden smelling of piss whether it's Fido or Fred.

timetosave · 16/12/2022 15:09

@YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot if you can smell dog pee from your grass i'd say you're a bit too close to it...

Couldn’t personally care less about it on my own garden, the occasional dog peeing on a bit of grass is such a non-issue. I also don’t agree that a bit of dog/animal pee is going to make anyone’s garden smell unpleasant out in the fresh air.

But I’d not get into anything with anyone about it because ultimately it is their garden and if they want to get upset about it, it’s their right. I keep my own dog well onto the path for that reason, right or wrong it’s just not worth the hassle.

Headabovetheparakeet · 16/12/2022 15:14

I think it's a good idea to stay off other peoples' property if you can. I manage to stop my toddler from running into gardens so you could probably stop your dog.

bruisinghelp · 16/12/2022 15:15

I don't think it's right to allow your dog to wee in someone's garden

TofuonToast · 16/12/2022 15:15

No it’s not okay to let your dog piss in someone else’s garden. Jfc.

UnsolicitedOpinions · 16/12/2022 15:16

Well if you have a dog I’m sure you know that dog pee ruins grass and causes unsightly discoloured patches, so of course she’s not being unreasonable.

You should have apologised, yes, instead of muttering about not being able to control when your dog pees.

Maybe you can’t, but you can control where they do it - by not letting them be on or within pissing distance of someone’s private garden.

Thanks all! I'll be more aware of where he is going & on a shorter lead next time.

I'm a dog owner and I wouldn't dream of letting her pee on someone's garden, it's just bad manners

WhaleInAManger · 16/12/2022 15:25

Couldn't care less if a dog pees on my lawn.

Dog pee ruins grass when the soil beneath is very dry. It's high in nitrogen which is, essentially, fertliser in concentrated form.

When the soil is dry, there is no moisture to dilute it a little bit into a form the plants can use. When there is moisture, it dilutes and becomes good for the plant. That's the reason dog pee spots in the garden are often surrounded by extra lush, green grass. That ring of lush growth is the bit that's been diluted enough to be useful.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/12/2022 15:25

Meh. I wouldn't be pleased if you let your dog roam across my front lawn to wee but I wouldn't care less about the border. And obviously there are various wild animals doing their thing all over anyway.

Tinsellitus · 16/12/2022 15:26

Dog pee (especially female dogs) contains a lot of nitrates which a) burns the middle of the grass, then creates a green ring when its been ultrafertilised. This makes the lawn look very uneven and for keen gardeners, is very annoying.

Plus, somebody’s front lawn is not a dogs toilet. I would be very cross if someone let their dogs pee on my lawn. Thankfully I have an enclosed front garden so isnt a problem

luckylavender · 16/12/2022 15:26

Also dig pee destroys grass.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/12/2022 15:27

I would deter my dog from dumping this and find a public patch In fact I do this everyday.

If he was desperate and did it without my permission however I'd be a bit embarrassed and apologise

He is used to holding till he gets to the permitted patch however.

Or if I'm lazy he wees in my own garden.

SirMingeALot · 16/12/2022 15:29

Scrotty.

Clamjamfry · 16/12/2022 15:29

It's disgusting to look out your window and see a dog peeing on your front garden. I make the owners uncomfortable with a keen stare and they seem to have started crossing the road to avoid me.😁

timetosave · 16/12/2022 15:30

I'm wondering now do I go round & apologise? Or just leave it be?

Ditto.

BlueLabel · 16/12/2022 15:30

It doesn't bother me if someone's dog pees on my front border, but no way would I allow either of my dogs to pee on someone elses

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/12/2022 15:31

It wouldn’t bother me enough to come out and give you a lecture, but the “I can’t control where my pet toilets” attitude dog owners give out does annoy me because it isn’t true. You’ve presumably trained your dog not to toilet in your house, or in the car, or in the pub. You can also train a dog to pee and poo in particular places and on command - I have a friend with a guide dog who’s trained that way and many other working dogs are trained that way too. Pet dog owners just seem not to bother with that training because they think it’s fine for everyone else to put up with their dog’s pee and poo.

SirMingeALot · 16/12/2022 15:29

Scrotty.

That may be my new favourite word what does it mean
It wouldn't bother me at all OP. Not that I'm thinking it is a great thing or whatever, I just simply wouldn't care.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/12/2022 15:32

I avoid it but there are times I can't, like if I have pulled in close to an unfenced lawn on a pavement to let someone else past, that my dog is then close enough even on a short lead, to pee on the tufty bits at the edge, without ever actually stepping on someone elses property.

My solution for those moments is a squirty water bottle, the push up/down sports caps work well, just squoosh the pissy bit, dilutes and rinses off the piss. If anyone has a strop at me I can show them I've done that, and apologise (but if they really go off after that they will be told to get to fuck, berating someone for an accident they've tried to rectify is just shitty behaviour!)

It CAN mostly be avoided though if your dog is walking beside you on a loose lead and you're paying attention and engaging with them, you can cue them to hurry along a bit and take them to somewhere piss is more appropriate.

It is also easier if they're taught to piss on cue, and frequently taken to places they can do this - for males, pair a cue with leg cocking and try to get them to empty out before you get to such risky, tempting places. (They may well still lift a leg, but the tank is dry!)
