To ask what you think about dogs peeing on front grass

A bit of a petty/insignificant one but I'm interested on peoples views. I was walking my little dog yesterday when he pee'd on the edge of someone's grass (not right in the middle of it), she couldn't have been closer to the edge near the pavement & it was only for a second or two, it's also hard to avoid because the small patch of communal grass runs onto their front grass (I'd never intentionally let my dog run onto someone's grass). The owner came to the front door shouting at me about what my dog had done & seemed very snippy about it. I think she was expecting me to apologise but I thought it was a bit OTT so I just said something about not being able to control when my dog pees & walked off. AIBU to think she was a bit over the top or should I have apologised?

I don't allow my dog to pee on peoples front grass because bitch's pee can kill off grass as my garden bears testament to. So no you shouldn't allow it as some people are very particular about their lawns

ThePoshUns · 16/12/2022 17:36

Sorry just saw you've apologised . Well done .

Maybe Mumsnet would collectively 'hate dogs' less if owners didn't do arsehole things like the op.

Things I've seen dog owners defend on Mumsnet:
Piss on others gardenleave poo in parks and pavements 'because foxes'.
Go into no dog parks deliberately
Allow dogs to jump at strangers because 'being friendly'
Refuse to put dogs on a lead when the invade others space
Suggest that people who have phobias due to being bitten should be subjected to their own brand of exposure therapy where they allow their dog all over them
Suggest someone who had a baby who was bitten by a dog was unreasonable to be wary

Totally agree.

londonrach · 16/12/2022 17:38

Of course it not ok. Do you want someone to wee on your grass. You vvvvv rude. I'm shocked you even think it ok.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 17:41

And now for the stream of posters who CBA to RTFT or even the OPs updates.Hmm

Trolltrotters · 16/12/2022 17:52

Ive just spent a lot of money on having my garden done and have a brick wall that goes to the pavement. Its been there 10 weeks and I can see green piss stains where scruffs allow dogs to pee against it.

It's looks terrible and I'll have to go out and scrub it with wire wool or something to stop it getting worse.

So yeah, if id have seen you let your dog piss all over the garden, id have shout at you too

Tbh just because the op eventually conceded she was wrong and apologised doesn't negate the fact she was an entitled arse to think it was ok in the first place.

Ha. You're clearly fuming that she apologised.

Keep on tantrumming x

CrownTheTurkey · 16/12/2022 17:59

It wouldn't bother me.
I've always put a few drops of apple cider in my female dogs drinking water to prevent ' scorch marks ' on the grass.
Imagine if your dog has peed up her gatepost op, she would have been apoplectic.

We'll, her response to me was 'if you smell piss you are standing to close"
On a thread about her allowing her dog to piss in others spaces.
So yes I think she showed herself to be an arse.

pigsDOfly · 16/12/2022 18:23

It's good that you've apologised OP but as someone who used to live in a house with a front garden that I was not allowed to fence (it was in the deeds) I can assure you it's extremely unpleasant to have random dogs peeing - and in the case of my garden - pooing on your grass

As pps have said, once one dog pees there every other male dog that comes by will pee there as well, so it's not just one small wee from your dog but wee from every dog in the neighbourhood, potentially.

And yes you can control where your dog wees.

I never allow my dog on or near other people's gardens. Just because a garden is unfenced doesn't mean it should be taken as a sign that it's can be used as a dog lavatory.

mewkins · 16/12/2022 18:26

There is a long stretch of grass that runs along the front of everyone's gardens on this road and although we all mow it it feels like it isn't mine and dogs are going to wee on it because millions of other dogs have. Likewise you can't really stop a dog pissinv against your fence or wall.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/12/2022 18:29

I am fucking pissed off with dog owners letting their precious dogs piss all over other peoples property. It ruins the grass. It kills shrubs and flowers.

I spend money making my garden look nice and some fucker kills it all by letting their dog piss everywhere. I can't fence the garden because planning laws prohibit it and the dogs would just piss on the fence and ruin that anyway.

It won't be just one either because once one dog pisses there every other bastarding dog has to add their contribution.

If you have a dog control it sufficiently to keep it from pissing on other people's gardens, fences or other property.

Hawkins001 · 16/12/2022 18:32

It's similar with hedges, people out signs up

Would a row of bricks but ones not stuck down, but used as a protection measure ?

endlesscraziness · 16/12/2022 18:37

Most pavements here have grass running right to them. It's literally impossible to stop a dog peeing there as there's no grass verge, just grass running to the pavement. Confused

Lesserspottedmama · 16/12/2022 18:37

The thing is OP, it may seem petty but we live on a road where A LOT of dog walkers pass by as it’s next to a footpath that leads to a popular woodland walk that is like a magnet to dog walkers for miles around. I’m not exaggerating when I say we get multiple dogs peeing on our front grass daily. The lawn stinks. And if I don’t run out and drag the black bin back immediately after it’s been emptied then dog walkers put their little black bags of poo into my bin. It stank in the summer because of all the poo bags. The truth is that dog ownership numbers has reached such astronomical heights in this country that it’s pretty hellish for the rest of us who prefer a dog poo/pee life.

BCBird · 16/12/2022 18:39

I don't expect someone to let their dog use my garden as a toilet saying that I don't expect delivery drivers to walk across my grass instead of the path but they do😫

Survey99 · 16/12/2022 18:39

Glad you have taken the comments on board. It is disgusting letting a dog pee in a strangers garden. Owners need to control and train their dogs. They put the effort in to train them not to pee in their houses for their benefit they can train them where to pee outdoors too to respect other peoples properly.

When we leave the house we walk briskly (Initially it was on a short lead until he understood it) until we get to the first suitable place for our lab to pee avoiding him sniffing all private gardens and fences on the way. He knows the routine and doesn't try to pee before we get there or try to mark on the way back. If he tries he is told "not there" and he waits a couple of minutes until he is somewhere he is allowed onto the grass.

It is not that difficult and the dog picks up the routine/command easily.

thelobsterquadrille · 16/12/2022 18:41

I'm a professional dog walker and never let the dogs I'm walking pee on people's property. That includes front lawns, cars, garden walls, bushes etc.

Once one dog does it, they all want to do it and can cause damage to the lawn. It also stinks to high heaven in summer.

There's no good reason for it - it's just lazy dog ownership.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/12/2022 18:41

I wish I had so little issues in my life I could summon the care to give a stuff about a dog peeing on some grass.

Sigh.

Of course it's not impossible. Put your dog on a short lead and don't let them pee on other people's property, or walk them on the opposite side so they can't reach.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 16/12/2022 18:46

I mean, I couldn’t get too worked up about it but it obviously bothered this woman so you should definitely apologise. Also, you can totally control where your dog wees. I have two and manage to prevent them from doing this. If they are loitering a bit too long or start sniffing round the neighbours’ front lawns I just give them a gentle tug and move them on. It’s really easy.

carefulcalculator · 16/12/2022 18:46

timetosave · 16/12/2022 15:18

Thanks all! I'll be more aware of where he is going & on a shorter lead next time.

Oh wow, no one ever says this!

You sound like a good egg Smile

(My view is your dog should not pee on anyone's garden, fwiw)
