To ask what you think about dogs peeing on front grass

A bit of a petty/insignificant one but I'm interested on peoples views. I was walking my little dog yesterday when he pee'd on the edge of someone's grass (not right in the middle of it), she couldn't have been closer to the edge near the pavement & it was only for a second or two, it's also hard to avoid because the small patch of communal grass runs onto their front grass (I'd never intentionally let my dog run onto someone's grass). The owner came to the front door shouting at me about what my dog had done & seemed very snippy about it. I think she was expecting me to apologise but I thought it was a bit OTT so I just said something about not being able to control when my dog pees & walked off. AIBU to think she was a bit over the top or should I have apologised?

YABU - totally UR if you think it is alright to allow your pet to piss on someone else's property. The fact that you don't know when he is going to want to pee is neither here nor there. And why should the owner fence it off to prevent this? Its THEIR property - leave it alone, its not for random dog owners to use as a latrine, I cannot believe the attitude of dog owners sometimes. Other people have feelings and needs too, not just your dog - and here's a big message - the people matter more than your pet.

YellowTreeHouse · 16/12/2022 15:33

It’s absolutely vile. She was right to pull you up on it.

You can and should control your mutt so it doesn’t piss on anyone else’s property.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 15:34

My view is that if they are so precious about their grass, fence it off

Quite a lot of properties, especially newer estates, are barred by the terms in the covenant from fencing off front gardens.

Babdoc · 16/12/2022 15:35

If it had been my lawn, I’d have been tempted to follow you home, note your address, then come back after dark with a jug of urine to get my revenge and see how you like a smelly, piss soaked garden.
It really shouldn’t be difficult to stop your dog trespassing and fouling other people’s properties.

clementinejuiceforxmas · 16/12/2022 15:36

It's probably because you're not the only one

Prescottdanni123 · 16/12/2022 15:44

As a dog owner, I wouldn't let my dog pee on someone's garden, but it is not the crime of the century.

You will get people on here telling you that you shouldn't let your dog pee anywhere other than the fenced off field you have booked, and you should shove a cork up your dog's arse and tie a not in its vagina/penis until you get it there.

Ylvamoon · 16/12/2022 15:47

Oh, 👀 another dog hating thered!

If the dog gotta go, it's going to go

@YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot if you can smell dog pee from your grass i'd say you're a bit too close to it...

In summer you can easily smell where dogs and other animals have peed.

Some places near me have had to put large rough stones, logs or plant pots to mark a border on their front grass as they aren't allowed to fence it.

I would laugh hysterically at the effort you'd gone to for this 'revenge', all the fannying about, following me home, coming back in the dark...

My garden probably stinks of cat piss, dog piss, fox piss, hedgehog piss (I don't know, I don't go out and sniff it).. I would neither notice, nor care if you dumped a jug or even a bucket, of human piss on it (or indeed any other brand of piss you care to source.)

pelargoniums · 16/12/2022 15:52

Why on earth would you think it’s OK to let your dog wee on someone else’s property? Confused

ElephantInTheKitchen · 16/12/2022 15:53

I couldn't give two hoots about it to be honest with you. Tbh I think people like that just generally hate dogs and love a good argument.

you should shove a cork up your dog's arse and tie a not in its vagina/penis until you get it there.

Anyone who thinks dogs (or humans) pee from their vagina needs an anatomy lesson.

xogossipgirlxo · 16/12/2022 15:54

Hate it. Hate it as much as a I hate cats shitting in gardens. I always give my neighbours killer look whenever I see them letting their dogs trying to pee on my trees or grass. Fuck off.

AnnListersBlister · 16/12/2022 15:32

That may be my new favourite word what does it mean
It wouldn't bother me at all OP. Not that I'm thinking it is a great thing or whatever, I just simply wouldn't care.

It is a very satisfying one to say! Means minging.

MilkyYay · 16/12/2022 15:55

My children play on my front grass, and there's a rule with our estate that you aren't allowed to fence it, so I'd be pretty fuming if i saw you letting your dog pee on it.

I know i can't control for wild animals etc but you can & should control your pet. Let it pee in your own yard.

Ylvamoon · 16/12/2022 15:47

No it's not. Pull your dog or if he can't hold, let him out in your garden. And first of all, do the snip.

CoffeeBoy · 16/12/2022 15:57

It annoys me when people let their dogs wee on my front garden and I don’t let my dog wee on other peoples front gardens. You might not be able to control when your dog wees but then walk your dog on the other side of you so they’re next to the road or don’t let them sniff. Though I admit I live in the country so only have one road to walk down and then we’re in the fields where it’s not an issue. I guess if 100% of you walk is in residential areas your dog has to sniff somewhere but even in towns there are parks you can go to.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 16/12/2022 16:02

Ye gods!

Edge of a front garden, with or without a small fence, hedge, wall? Couldn't get exercised about it. I try to pull Ddog off if he looks tempted.

Very different from letting them walk into the centre and piss there.

I say that as someone whose front wall, door, is right n the pavement and, I assume, very many cats,. dogs, foxes etc piss all along it. The dog is certainly usually very interested in sniffing along the base of it!

And no, he won't piss in our garden. Like many dogs he just won't!

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/12/2022 16:14

xogossipgirlxo · 16/12/2022 15:55

No it's not. Pull your dog or if he can't hold, let him out in your garden. And first of all, do the snip.

Castrating doesn't stop scent marking.

Letting my dog out for a piss before going for a walk (they'll have been out for multiple pisses, more if its freezing and i dont want the door open of course, before a walk) won't stop them wanting to scent mark either.

Neither of these solutions stops a dog pissing in the wrong place at that moment in time on a walk where I am stuck next to someones garden, letting someone else past me (happens often here, narrow pavements where I have to stop dead before we hit a narrower gap, to let someone past).

I mean unless you have a time portal I can whizz back in time in that moment and let my dog piss at home, then back to our walk...

I assume you do not.

I also (in response to another poster) can only walk my dog on my left, which means there is no option on some routes to have the dog walk between me and the road, but even if there were I would not do that, it increases the risk of accident to dog and traffic. (I believe the highway code also suggests animals are led with the person between animal and traffic, or it certainly used to).

2bazookas · 16/12/2022 16:15

You CAN and should control WHERE your dog pees and I'm sure you know some dogs pee marks grass.

Pinkieismyname · 16/12/2022 16:15

Really annoys me when dogs do wee or poo in my garden but I wouldn't chase out after someone for a wee. I would give out if they poo and if they didn't clean it up, then I would have a major problem. I don't really care how lovely and friendly and beautiful your dog is, I don't want him/her next nor near me or my garden

TheGuv1982 · 16/12/2022 16:17

I just don’t let my dog walk next to peoples gardens to avoid this. I’d find it annoying if someone’s dog pissed on my garden too.

MarigoldPetals · 16/12/2022 16:18

I would be really cross. It’s gross.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/12/2022 16:20

Of course I wouldn't care if a dog took a two second wee on the edge of an unfenced lawn.

But MN is full of people who'd have a breakdown at the thought,

BeanieTeen · 16/12/2022 16:24

I don’t let my dog do that. Maybe it depends where you live as you might be limited in terms of more open space or grassy areas (although then really I don’t know why you would get a dog…) but mine goes heel until we reach our nearest grassy field, he can wee there to his hearts content. Otherwise I guess lamp posts are fair game too. But not other people’s front lawns.
