To ask what you think about dogs peeing on front grass

A bit of a petty/insignificant one but I'm interested on peoples views. I was walking my little dog yesterday when he pee'd on the edge of someone's grass (not right in the middle of it), she couldn't have been closer to the edge near the pavement & it was only for a second or two, it's also hard to avoid because the small patch of communal grass runs onto their front grass (I'd never intentionally let my dog run onto someone's grass). The owner came to the front door shouting at me about what my dog had done & seemed very snippy about it. I think she was expecting me to apologise but I thought it was a bit OTT so I just said something about not being able to control when my dog pees & walked off. AIBU to think she was a bit over the top or should I have apologised?

The trouble is they all like to go in the same place. To you it's a one off, but it might be the tenth this week to him. Don't judge him until you've walked a mile in his shoes had your garden pissed on daily for 5 years.

RunDownRita · 16/12/2022 16:28

Was he actually on her property? I’d have been unimpressed by that.

If he was on the pavement and did a quick wee that went on the grass, I’d have apologised, but in a bright and breezy way not a mea maxima culpa way.

timetosave · 16/12/2022 16:32

Didn't quite expect this response, some of which has been hilarious so thank you for that. Haven't been on MN that long (maybe that shows). Thanks for the advice @WiddlinDiddlin I'll be doing that next time.

I did feel very bad for muttering & walking off, so I went & apologised. Feeling a much better human. She was very understanding & actually really nice.

Iheartmysmart · 16/12/2022 16:35

I don’t let my dog go near people’s gardens, it’s bad manners. Do have to laugh at a house around the corner though who have one solitary fence panel then just the posts sticking up out the ground, together with a pile of absolute rubbish stacked in their garden. The panel has a ‘please don’t let your dog pee here’ sign on it which is probably the least of their worries judging by the size of the rats they’ve got.

In summer you can easily smell where dogs and other animals have peed.

If you didn't allow your dog to piss on other people's property the.n I wouldn't be able to smell it at all.

Oh, 👀 another dog hating thered!

If the dog gotta go, it's going to go

No. Plenty of people posting have dogs.
Responsible dog owners Just hate inconsiderate dog owners that piss non dog owners off and give us all a bad name.
WTF thinks it’s acceptable to let their dog on someone else’s property? Bonkers.
If you can’t control where it goes then you are not in control of your dog.

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 16/12/2022 16:42

I can never smell it in gardens... never smelt dog pee anywhere.

Is this a thing now?

Well done, OP.
Much more sensible than some of the inconsiderate and/or hyperbolic responses from some on this thread.

You'd look like an idiot smiling back. The most stupid thing you could possibly do. Although you might think you're better than "odd one".

phoenixrosehere · 16/12/2022 16:47

I’d be annoyed because there is public land right across the street from me where dogs could pee, lots of it around. I’ve walked home and found a group of people on my property with their dogs sniffing in my bushes. Had to build an extra bit of border and even as there were obvious tools, and half the border done someone still let their dog pee on the property. I‘ve been doing gardening and landscaping on my front garden by myself for most of the year. It’s frustrating to have to see your work coming together and someone allows their dog to pee on it.

That’s nice to hear.
You could have done worse really - we have a hedge at the side of our house which loses its leaves in the winter, revealing a wonderful array of dog shit bags which have been thrown in there over the spring and summer (we rent, if it we owned the house we’d get rid of said hedge). I’d prefer if people just put them straight into our bin if carrying it home or to the next public bin is so difficult.

Southwig22 · 16/12/2022 16:50

Good luck with this one OP - mumsnet is not necessarily a representative sample of sanity where dogs are concerned.

In the real world, no YANBU. It's a tiny bit of urine that won't cause any harm at all.

TheLittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 16/12/2022 16:53

@xogossipgirlxo look like an idiot when smiling at an....idiot? 😊

Let em vent

That's what I usually do with idiots kicking off. It usually makes them stop and think I find... diffuses situations quite well

It is really difficult for some dog owns to put their poos bags in the bin.

The best I've seen is a woman walking with a boy in school uniform put their poo bag on a wall. There was a bin 5 metres in front of them.

I was so tempted to complain to the boy's school.

As a PP pointed out it is not just her dog who would be doing that it will be about 10 other dogs daily.

In hot weather particularly urine stinks.

YABU - totally UR if you think it is alright to allow your pet to piss on someone else's property. The fact that you don't know when he is going to want to pee is neither here nor there. And why should the owner fence it off to prevent this? Its THEIR property - leave it alone, its not for random dog owners to use as a latrine, I cannot believe the attitude of dog owners sometimes. Other people have feelings and needs too, not just your dog - and here's a big message - the people matter more than your pet.

All of this. I’m so tired of this attitude from many (not all) dog owners and I wish pet dogs would be trained more like guide dogs are because I’m sick of the lack of consideration. I posted on another thread recently how a resident told me she “couldn’t help” her unleashed dog jumping up and scratching me in our flat building and told me she wouldn’t put a leash on her dog. The same week another dog peed in the lift and the owner didn’t clean it up. Both owners have been spoken to thankfully.

giraffesaregreat · 16/12/2022 17:03

I think it's really inconsiderate to let your dog wee on someone else's garden. Why would you think it's okay? I'm not a rabid dog hater, but I really dislike it when dog walkers let this happen. There are plenty of other places for your dog to wee.

Even worse is when I look out of the window and our self-proclaimed neighbourhood-know-it-all and judge-of-how-everyone-lives-their-lives is letting his dog shit on my front garden. He saw me give a disgusted look as I got out of my car and said 'It's okay - I'm going to pick it up' when really it's not okay at all. There's always something left behind and it's just disgusting; if I wanted dog shit in my garden I would have my own dog.

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 16/12/2022 17:04

Maybe Mumsnet would collectively 'hate dogs' less if owners didn't do arsehole things like the op.

Things I've seen dog owners defend on Mumsnet:
Piss on others gardenleave poo in parks and pavements 'because foxes'.
Go into no dog parks deliberately
Allow dogs to jump at strangers because 'being friendly'
Refuse to put dogs on a lead when the invade others space
Suggest that people who have phobias due to being bitten should be subjected to their own brand of exposure therapy where they allow their dog all over them
Suggest someone who had a baby who was bitten by a dog was unreasonable to be wary

Precisely. It’s not dogs I hate it’s the attitude of many dog owners. I have some friends who have incredibly well Trained dogs I am
comfortable around and am usually at ease when I see a guide dog.

sadly, I saw a dog get kicked a couple of weeks ago for jumping on a stranger. and as sorry as I felt for the dog who clearly doesn’t know better, the owner was definitely partly to blame for letting her dog repeatedly
jump at a man who was shouting NO. It’s just not great for anyone to have out of control dogs.

KangarooKenny · 16/12/2022 17:11

I’m not allowed to fence off my front garden, it’s in the deeds.

Suedomin · 16/12/2022 17:17

Yes you are being unreasonable you shouldn't let your dog use other people's property as a toilet.

DillDanding · 16/12/2022 17:22

I would attempt to steer my dog away from someone’s grass, but I also wouldn’t particularly care if a dog pissed on my lawn. Unless it was a regular thing and it was killing the grass. My dog’s piss doesn’t seem to affect our grass, but my MIL’s dog’s piss makes it go yellow 🤷‍♀️

If it was that disgusting plastic grass, I’d actively encourage my dog to piss on it 😂 (joke)

LadyOfTheCanyon · 16/12/2022 17:27

This isn't quite the same thing, but...

I work in a shop where we put a display of plants/ flowers outside, which we sell from and gets moved around daily.

I'm forever raising my voice warningly at dogs ( by which I mean their owners) who look like they're going to piss on it. And the owners ALWAYS make a "oh fuck off and stop being so precious about your saleable items" face at me when I point out that I've now got to sluice everything down with a bucket of water so that the next customer doesn't pick up a piss soaked begonia.

Ludoole · 16/12/2022 17:32

I used to live on a corner plot and PEOPLE used to urinate and defecate in my front garden!!! Also found used condoms by my trees. A dog peeing, I would have preferred!
