To think that 40s is not 'middle aged'

Here is how my scheme goes:

0-10 childhood
10-19 older childhood and teens
20-29 young adult
30 to 49 - two decades of 'prime' adulthood
50-59 middle aged
60-69 getting older
70-79 old
80+ bonus time

No, it's much earlier than that. That's ludicrous. It's 40 or younger. My friend says it's 35.

Before I was 40, I would have agreed with you. Now I'm mid 40s, I would definitely class myself as middle aged. That's not to say it's not a 'prime' of life in lots of ways. It's probably a good age career wise for most, you're neither too young nor too old for promotion (in places where ageism is still rife) And you're unlikely to be talked down to, purely because of your age.
I do feel middle aged though.
