To think that 40s is not 'middle aged'

Here is how my scheme goes:

0-10 childhood
10-19 older childhood and teens
20-29 young adult
30 to 49 - two decades of 'prime' adulthood
50-59 middle aged
60-69 getting older
70-79 old
80+ bonus time

Do you disagree?

I think 45 onwards is middle aged. I'm 48.

Pascor · 15/12/2022 19:27

YABU, in your list, only 70plus is old? Nah, late 40s is definitely middle aged.

Wikpedia says the general consensus is 40 to 60 is middle aged.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 15/12/2022 19:28

I think 40’s are middle aged - it’s roughly the middle of your life 🤷🏼‍♀️

angharadsgoat · 15/12/2022 19:28

Are you from the other current thread about invisibility? We've been discussing that there.

I think 40s is middle aged, but I'd consider myself so at late 30s - more controversial perhaps. I'm no longer younger, nor am I old but somewhere in the middle. It doesn't feel like a negative label for me.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 15/12/2022 19:27

I think 45 onwards is middle aged. I'm 48.

I'm 49 and I'd like to object, however have no reasonable grounds.

LubaLuca · 15/12/2022 19:28

I think it is. Most people are about midway between birth and death at that point. I'm middle aged in my 40s, no shame in that.

I know it's lost its literal meaning, but I don't need to pretend I'm not on the downward slope now.

PronounsBaby · 15/12/2022 19:28

Depends on how long you are planning on living for

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 15/12/2022 19:29

Well if 80s + is bonus time then 40 is firmly middle age! Middle aged doesn't really have to mean anything though.

TheArtfulStodger · 15/12/2022 19:29

It's middle aged
And I think it's insulting to refer to those up to 29 as young adults - it sounds patronising, many people have been through so much and achieved so much by then

angharadsgoat · 15/12/2022 19:31

I'd say middle age ends at 59, that's where old begins, but you're also probably out of snipers alley at 60 (also discussed on the other thread).

Testina · 15/12/2022 19:31

Of course it’s middle aged.
And plenty of people don’t get the privilege to experience it, or have it as the “middle” of their life.
So I think it’s silly to be trying to avoid it because you think it sounds ageing - which is presumably your issue?
Ageing is a privilege.
And can be in your 40s, middle aged and in your prime.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 15/12/2022 19:32

I would see 'young adult' as 18-21. Then just an 'adult' until middle-aged.

userxx · 15/12/2022 19:33

@CatherineNotSoMuch 🤣

upfucked · 15/12/2022 19:33

Middle age is middle of your life. If you look at life expectancy in the UK it’s middle aged.

MilkyYay · 15/12/2022 19:33

Yabu. 20-29 is just adulthood!

From age 22 i was working full time in accountancy. My sister had her eldest at 27. I'd say from at least 45 you are middle aged.

Many people in their 60s are grandparents.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/12/2022 19:34

I think 40 is middle-aged. 70 is old age.

Tuichi · 15/12/2022 19:34

And can be in your 40s, middle aged and in your prime.

I agree. I’m 43 and both tags feel right. I was resistant to considering myself middle-aged up to actually turning 40. Now it doesn’t seem to matter.

AnnaTortoiseshell · 15/12/2022 19:35

You’re in denial, love!

MadameDe · 15/12/2022 19:36

40-55 is middle aged. Unless you know people who live until they're 120.

Jouto · 15/12/2022 19:36

Yabu, it's near the middle of life expectancy.

Tuichi · 15/12/2022 19:36

However, I do like the ‘getting older’ category. ‘Elderly’ doesn’t seem right to me pre-70 these days.

procrastinator8 · 15/12/2022 19:37

Over 65 = older person www.england.nhs.uk/ourwork/clinical-policy/older-people/improving-care-for-older-people/

I would say 40s/45+ = middle age
65+ older age
70 old

SheWoreYellow · 15/12/2022 19:38

I’d say

20-45 young
45-65 middle aged
65-79 older
80+ elderly

Stuckinsnowinkent · 15/12/2022 19:38

Unless your planning to make 100 your past the middle of your life, sorry. I'm in my 40s too.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 15/12/2022 19:38

I’m 40 and consider myself middle aged. Body wise my teens and early twenties were my prime, mentally I’ve been in my prime for the last few years as in I’m more confident and content (and give less fucks). I think they all overlap.
