Hey all, I am due to give birth to a little girl early next year, my husbands first child and we are super excited. We have already chosen to name her Lauren, which we both love. My DH's sister keeps saying Lauren is a chavy name and calling her Lozza. AIBU that this is really annoying me. I find it very rude, not normally someone who cares what other people think but this has really got to me!

How incredibly rude.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 14/12/2022 22:24

Lauren’s a lovely name, absolutely timeless. I’ve never heard of it being shortened at all, but Ren is also lovely!

rosemarysalter · 14/12/2022 22:27

What's chavvy about it?

Carolines always get called Caz or Cazza but that's not a chav name

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 14/12/2022 22:29

SIL is a cow. Everyone with any sense knows that, no matter what you think of a baby name, the correct response is “Oh, that’s lovely”, unless it’s so ridiculous that the child might get bullied (like the family I know called Lawrence who thought it was a good idea to call their daughter Florence).

If it’s any comfort, OP, neither my mom or I liked my sister’s favourite name for a girl (although only my mom was daft enough to actually say so!) My sister used the name anyway, and now neither of us can imagine my niece being called anything else.

honeylulu · 14/12/2022 23:08

Tell us what SIL's first name is and we'll think up a chavvy nickname for you to use on her.

Rainbowbub22 · 14/12/2022 23:32

Thank you all for your replies, you've all calmed me down a bit and made me and DH laugh. He told her to shut up and that's she's an immature twat.
Her name is Judith but she already goes by the nickname judypie, think that says it all 🤣🤣
Auntie Cunt 🤣🤣

If that’s how your DH and his sister talk to each other then it’s not surprising she’s reacting to the baby name as she is.

greenteafiend · 14/12/2022 23:52

It's not a common name for babies at the moment, but it's a perfectly nice name and has no particular class connotations. The Lauren I know are either Lauren or Laurie. I have never heard "Lozza."

Next time she says something like that, say "Well, you can name your kids whatever you like, and I'm choosing this name for my child because I like it. Making comments like this about this name is upsetting me, can you please stop doing it?"

greenteafiend · 14/12/2022 23:55

(She's probably just seething because she got stuck with "Judith," to be honest. Every Judith I know hates their name. That said, if someone I knew was announcing their baby's name to be Judith, I would still say "How nice" or something of that kind. If someone has already chosen the name, you don't make negative comments unless you really do think that the name is so awful that it could lead to bullying or awful situations for the child--Jennifer Taylor or something like that!)

knockyknees · 15/12/2022 00:42

Lauren is a lovely name. I've never come across any Laurens with a shortened version, so it'd never occur to me that Lozza could be a nickname for it.

Lozza, OTOH, is definitely chavvy and speaks volumes about your SIL that she thinks it's a suitable name (for anyone).

Her name is Judith but she already goes by the nickname judypie, think that says it all

Good grief.... yes, it does say a lot. Judypie...is SIL a toddler? Did she chose that nickname herself?

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 15/12/2022 00:56

I'm also a Lauren. Although I do tend to go by Loz more often than not but I think it's just because I've gotten used to so many people nicknaming me it over the years it's sort of just stuck.

steppemum · 15/12/2022 14:12

just wetting myself that her nn is Judypie 😂

10HailMarys · 15/12/2022 14:15

It's a lovely name and your DH's sister is absolutely vile.

WifeMotherWorker · 15/12/2022 15:06

Lauren is a lovely name. I’ve never heard it shortened to Lozza! Tell your SIL that the name is Lauren, it isn’t to be shortened and you don’t care for her opinion… how bloody rude!!

blueflagflyhigh · 15/12/2022 15:10

She really shouldn't be saying anything, very rude. I think Lauren is lovely name and absolutely not chavy. Well not where I'm from it isn't.

In future do not share any name details with anyone. I learned the hard way too. Oh we quite like X name and then u get everyone's opinion. We later came to the name we chose and told no one. My mum was really annoyed but she was the worst 😂 oh no I don't like that 🙈

Topseyt123 · 15/12/2022 15:19

Lauren is a beautiful name. Ignore your mega rude SIL.

Well done to your DH for telling her to shut up.

RunDownRita · 15/12/2022 15:23

I'd guess she's thinking of the Catherine Tate character. Might be worth telling your SIL that's she's showing her age as almost no one under 30 will have a clue who that is.

That's what I thought of. The 'not bovvered' Lauren. Though my DC hasn't heard of that Catherine Tate character, though they know who she is - Dr. Who apparently.

Rayna37 · 15/12/2022 15:48

I can't think of any Lauren's at school in the Mid 80s to 90s and I think we'd have thought it was quite a posh name! It was the 2nd most popular name in 1994 so there may be loads around 30 but it's not even in the top 100 now.

She's being ridiculous- I'd say to her that only common people use the Lozza/Cazza shortenings (offence meant to her, not in general!). My sister was given what my Mum thought was a classy unusual un-shortenable name, and spent her teens known by some as Maz/Mazza !

I think Lauren is lovely.

saraclara · 15/12/2022 15:53

Yep, it'll be the Catherine Tate character that she's thinking of. Hopefully that Lauren will be consigned to history very soon.
