Hey all, I am due to give birth to a little girl early next year, my husbands first child and we are super excited. We have already chosen to name her Lauren, which we both love. My DH's sister keeps saying Lauren is a chavy name and calling her Lozza. AIBU that this is really annoying me. I find it very rude, not normally someone who cares what other people think but this has really got to me!

I grew up with several Laura's and Lauren's, all of whom have seamlessly transitioned from childhood to adulthood with their name. Which is much more than the likes of the current popular names like Wynter, Jaedon (or 2k other spellings), etc. Not one of the individuals I know is chavvy and all are much more successful than me in life. I say go for it. Its a nice, pleasant sounding, normal name. Not overly common and not out there with Wynter and Co. I'm sure she will thank you for your beautiful name choice in years to come.

Turnthelightoff · 14/12/2022 21:06

Some great comments here! auntie $*%# was a good idea. Also Ren as a shortening just made me love the name even more.

I did just think of the Catherine Tate am I bovvered sketch, the teenager is Lauren and is the one and only negative example of the name I can think of.

Stick with your lovely choice

Allthingspeaches · 14/12/2022 21:06

Lauren is a lovely name. I'd have thought Lozzie would have come to mind more naturally as a nickname especially for a small child.

Ignore your SIL.

There’s quite a few Lauren’s from Towie which might be what she’s thinking of, but I think it’s just a coincidence, I don’t think of it as a chavvy name, it’s no Mercedes!

They're not far off the same age as me and it was reasonably common where I am now. It wouldn't have been unusual to have several Lauras/Lauren's in your class. I always liked it personally but even more so now its less common but still beautiful. One of those names that will probably go in and out of popularity for years to come :) Mercedes makes my eyes water though 😅

Gettingeverybuggoing · 14/12/2022 21:08

It’s a nice name, not chavvy 🤷🏻‍♀️

My Sil was so annoying during my pregnancy, calling Dd Matilda and constantly saying ‘When baby Matilda comes etc’ just because she liked the name…think she was genuinely shocked when we didn’t call Dd Matilda..people are so weird about other people’s baby names

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 14/12/2022 21:09

My best friend in high school Lauren was known as Loz or Lozza lol but it appears this is the minority on this thread so I wouldn't worry.

nobird · 14/12/2022 21:11

The only thing you should ever say if someone reveals what they’re thinking of naming their baby is ‘how lovely, I can’t wait to meet her/him.’

UsingChangeofName · 14/12/2022 21:14

Maybe when your SiL turns 14, she will begin to act a bit more maturely

Wisdomteetharenotwise · 14/12/2022 21:15

As a Lauren myself, I can honestly say I've never been called loz or lozza! And where I'm based (Scotland) Lauren is considered a lovely name, not chavvy! When I was at school all the other Laurens were nice, have yet to come across a chav (or ned as we call them in Scotland) called Lauren!

As others posters have said it's a little underused now so we need more Laurens! 😁

StrawberryWater · 14/12/2022 21:17

Tell her to pipe down and stop acting like she made a baby with her brother. 😆

Lauren is a lovely name. Never heard of any Lauren’s being called Lozza, I only know it as a nickname for Lorraine.

ElspethTascioni · 14/12/2022 21:23

I went to school with a couple of Laurens, all got called Loz/Lozza - but does it matter? For a school nickname? You turn any name into a nickname. Some of the nicknames I get are vile, but when I tell people my actual name, I frequently get told it’s beautiful 🤷🏻‍♀️ so what can you do!

teazle · 14/12/2022 21:36

I’ve never heard of Lauren being shortened to Lozza. It’s a lovely name. Ask your DH to have a word with his sister (or do it yourself if you’d be comfortable doing so).

Pallisers · 14/12/2022 21:40

Next time she says it look her in the eye and say "yeah that might be a concern if I cared about your opinion ... but I don't. Oh and just in case you say it elsewhere, a lot of people think using the word chavvy if very very off - just didn't want you to embarrass yourself. Now anyone want more coffee"

Barleysugar86 · 14/12/2022 21:40

The first thing I think of is Ralph Lauren... It sounds classy and a little old school American glamour to me.

LynetteScavo · 14/12/2022 21:44

What's your SILS name? If she ever said Lozzer again I'd call her a silly version of her name.

FlyingPandas · 14/12/2022 21:45

Lauren is one of those beautiful names that is well-known enough that people will always know how to spell and pronounce it, but not so popular that there will be another 3 Laurens in her class.

SIL is being immature and nasty but yes, this is why you don't discuss name choices with friends and family in advance. People will always have opinions on names based on people they've known with those names, or people in the media with those names, or people they've taught with those names etc etc. Once the baby is born and named I think there is more finality to it and people feel less need to express their less-than-helpful opinions!

FWIW I know a few primary and secondary school age Laurens and they are either known simply as Lauren, or as Laurie as a diminutive which is also really pretty.

bananaboats · 14/12/2022 21:45

Lots of Lauren's & Laura's when I was growing up never heard it shortened to loz or lozza! Lesson learned don't share your baby names with anyone

LimeTwists · 14/12/2022 21:46

Lauren Bacall was renowned for being a right chav 🙄She’s both silly and rude. It’s a really lovely name.

MermaidinJeans · 14/12/2022 21:49

Whatever your sister in law's name is, make it into something ridiculous and call her it at every opportunity.

NewtoHolland · 14/12/2022 21:54

I love the name Lauren but we already had a close relative named it. It isn't chavvy at all.

fallonscafe · 14/12/2022 21:58

Isn't there a teenage TV character called Lauren? They might be thinking of that.
It's not my personal taste, but have a look at past threads in Baby Names to see what people have said there.

fallonscafe · 14/12/2022 22:00

Yes it was a Catherine Tate character called Lauren.

BeautifulWar · 14/12/2022 22:16

It's a nice name.

Any name can be turned into an unflattering nickname, don't worry about it, SIL is being a dick.

SingingSands · 14/12/2022 22:18

pelargoniums · 14/12/2022 20:32

Start calling her Auntie Cunt.

Can't stop laughing at this 🤣

steppemum · 14/12/2022 22:22

I think in these situations the only thing to do is to tell them that you have changed your mind and you are going to name her.... and then find a really extreme name
Hepzibah
Jezebel
Gwendoline

etc. Whatever she says just stick to it. - Oh well we like it is is so unusual. I thought we could call her Heppy for short. Or bahbah.
Deadpan, dead serious.

After baby is born, Lauren will be greeted with relief.
