Spare freezer in downstairs loo?

Give it to me true, mumsnet. AIBU to put a spare freezer (and store food in it!) in our downstairs bathroom? Bathroom is huge. But yes it does have a toilet there.

Don’t feel there’s much more to the AIBU than that. Spare freezer currently taking up space in the living room, which is silly, and yes I do really feel the need for it for batch cooking and keeping all my cheats chopped veg or when things are on offer. We do have a fridge/freezer in the kitchen but freezer section is very narrow and not up to snuff. I do plan down the line to buy as huge a fridge / freezer as we can afford and that can fit in the space but for now - is it disgusting to keep a freezer in the toilet, basically .. ? I think I probably know the answer but it would fit so well there!

Blurgh!

JustBkind · 11/12/2022 18:06

If it’s a big bathroom like you say it is then I don’t see a problem with it personally. Use the top as an extra shelf! 🙈🤣

ExtraOnions · 11/12/2022 18:07

Why not ? It’s a sealed, frozen box … with no doubt wrapped & boxed food - are you worried germs will leap in ?

You aren’t cooking next to the toilet..

EarringsandLipstick · 11/12/2022 18:08

Could you divide the room & create a space to house the freezer? I think it sounds a bit gross to have it in a bathroom but also I can't imagine how it works having it in the living room?!?

Furrydogmum · 11/12/2022 18:09

Can you cupboard it in?

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 18:09

I am indeed worried that germs (that autocorrected to Germans!) will leap in or be perceived by guests to be able to leap in. Fecal particles in the air and all that.

If I went to a house and the freezer or fridge was in the bathroom, I wouldn't want to eat there.

Outoflineupsidedown · 11/12/2022 18:11

It sounds gross but when you really think about it - it isnt.
The freezer will be closed (hopefully) when the toilet is being used, the lid shut when flushed.
You will be going to the freezer, taking out/putting food back in and leaving the bathroom. There is no danger of anything happening to the food, if you need to use the space use that space for it.

msbevvy · 11/12/2022 18:11

I some countries it is normal to have the washer and dryer in the bathroom. Could you move those in there and put the freezer where they were? They can be stacked one on top of another if necessary.

Hidingawaytoday · 11/12/2022 18:11

I would! Like PP said - it's a sealed box with sealed food inside. If it makes your life easier then go for it. Though is there a plug nearby? I don't think any of my bathrooms/toilets have plug sockets.

trailerandtractor · 11/12/2022 18:12

I highly doubt any germs can hop from
the bog into a sealed freezer on to food that’s presumably also wrapped in said freezer. Yanbu.

socksandvests · 11/12/2022 18:12

Could double up as a handy baby changing unit too 😂

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/12/2022 18:13

We have a large 'loo-tility' - loo, shower, belfast sink, washing machine and tall freezer. Never occurred to me to worry about germs.

SkylightSkylight · 11/12/2022 18:14

Call it the utility & no one will bat an eyelid!

OrigamiOwls · 11/12/2022 18:14

Have you got a plug in there for it? Our downstairs bathroom has no electric plugs in it.

PinkiOcelot · 11/12/2022 18:15

It would mint bother me tbh. I couldn’t cope with having a freezer in my living room though.

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 18:19

PPs asking about plugs: no there aren’t any and rather surprisingly this is not something I had considered 😂🤦🏼‍♀️But there are plugs the other side of the wall and immediately outside the door, so we could wire through from those, and if we did turn into a loo-tility- love it @DisplayPurposesOnly - then plugs would surely be a-ok and approved.

Living room is other side of kitchen separated by divided doors. We have the doors closed and are currently not even going in the living room because it’s too goddamned cold (draughty rear extension, French doors are ancient and not sealed properly, there’s snow outside!).

Ooo I’d like to do this, but washer / dryer currently by boiler, in a tiny tiny room we dry clothes in as it heats up so nicely, and I’m not sure how the freezer would cope so close to all that lovely heat. Yes it’s boxed in. But do people typically put their freezers smack next to their boilers and heated airers in a tiny space?
Our house is starting to sound ridiculous.

I think sockets have to be 3 meters from the edge of any bath or shower. Would the room be big enough for that?

RogueV · 11/12/2022 18:24

No

Hmmmm. Thanks for this. The answer is just about, diagonally from edge of bath. We’d have to really want to do this basically. My alternative is to somehow stick it under the stairs (there is a space there, but probably not big enough). Food for thought!

TinySaltLick · 11/12/2022 18:30

100% yes, it's not like people will open the door and liberally spray piss around the room like a Catherine wheel

mum11970 · 11/12/2022 18:30

Would you be able to close the bathroom door with the lead from the freezer going out? If you are in the UK you cannot legally have a plug socket fitted unless it is more than 3m from the edge of the bath and no professional electrician would put one in for you.

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2022 18:30

If it is a big space I would do it . You could always get it boxed in but as long as everything clean - I would do it.
