Spare freezer in downstairs loo?

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 18:05

Give it to me true, mumsnet. AIBU to put a spare freezer (and store food in it!) in our downstairs bathroom? Bathroom is huge. But yes it does have a toilet there.

Don’t feel there’s much more to the AIBU than that. Spare freezer currently taking up space in the living room, which is silly, and yes I do really feel the need for it for batch cooking and keeping all my cheats chopped veg or when things are on offer. We do have a fridge/freezer in the kitchen but freezer section is very narrow and not up to snuff. I do plan down the line to buy as huge a fridge / freezer as we can afford and that can fit in the space but for now - is it disgusting to keep a freezer in the toilet, basically .. ? I think I probably know the answer but it would fit so well there!

My washer and dryer are in the downstairs bathroom. And I wear clothes in there and I flush the loo. Why am I not prostrate on a bed of sickness?

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/12/2022 21:40

There have been articles and videos in the papers this week about germs from flushing, this was in the independent:-

Germs from urine and faeces travel 5ft from toilet in seconds after flushing, study finds
Toilets spray an “invisible plume” of particles containing urine and faeces almost 5ft from the pan during flushing, a study has found.
Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder used lasers and cameras to show how germs are ejected from a lidless toilet at 6.6ft per second, reaching 4.9ft above the toilet within eight seconds.
The airborne droplets can transport E. coli, C. difficile, noroviruses and adenoviruses, scientists say.
“Once you see these videos, you’re never going to think about a toilet flush the same way again,” lead author Professor John Crimaldi said.

Confession: I actually use the loo wearing clothes! And I don't get changed before touching my freezer!

onemorerose · 11/12/2022 21:43

Shit, I wear clothes on the toilet as well!

missmollygreen · 11/12/2022 21:52

No worse than brushing your teeth in the same room as a toilet. In fact much cleaner, as the freezer is shut.

missmollygreen · 11/12/2022 21:53

Always close the lid when flushing!!!

VestaTilley · 11/12/2022 21:56

It’s fine if it’s a massive bathroom.

If it’s a tiny bathroom and it would be next to the loo then that would be grim.

stopthebarking · 11/12/2022 22:00

It's one of those things that seem a bit odd on the surface, but when you really stop to consider it, it's fine. If that layout works best for you, don't worry what anyone else thinks!

stopthebarking · 11/12/2022 22:05

People would be happier if they thought less about fecal particles, and I say that as a person with mild germaphobic tendencies. Wash your hands after toileting or coming into contact with the toilet. Wash your hands before preparing food and again before eating. Avoid cross-contamination when handling or preparing raw ingredients. Wipe down your phone every so often and avoid touching your face, when possible. If you do those things, you're ahead of the game. Obsessing about how far "particles" may travel through your home will only bring you misery.

i would

This. Who doesn’t do this?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 11/12/2022 22:28

My big freezer is in the garage which is way muckier than any bathroom

I expect loads of people have similar (esp chest freezers etc)

HedgehogB · 11/12/2022 22:35

I went to the loo in a cafe in the south of France. They had one of those ovens you roast chickens on a spit in - like you see in supermarkets. All these steaming chickens slowly rotating as I sat there . Yum.

This. It's illegal to have a 3 pin socket in the bathroom

No it isn’t.

Ch3wylemon · 11/12/2022 22:52

My first thought was yuck. Then I remembered we have a chest freezer in the garage that almost certainly gets visited by rats, mice & birds. So if you can sort out the power - I'd crack on.

You wrap food before you put it in the freezer anyway.

Grim.

Hmmmm. Thanks for this. The answer is just about, diagonally from edge of bath. We’d have to really want to do this basically. My alternative is to somehow stick it under the stairs (there is a space there, but probably not big enough). Food for thought!

I used to have a chest freezer in the space under my stairs, it was a small one, about half size I guess but held all my bulk buys. The door opened upwards and would not open fully where it met the sloping roof so we fixed a strong magnet on the door and ceiling to hold it open so I could root around! Worked well for us when we had a small kitchen.

Grim.

They don’t usually have freezers either.

Cinderellla · 12/12/2022 00:23

I would be worried about poo particles getting on my ice cream 🤢

BigChesterDraws · 12/12/2022 05:07

I stayed in an Air BnB where the freezer was in the bathroom (which had a toilet in it). I did think it odd.

parsniiips · 12/12/2022 05:37

I would try and build a cupboard around it and use the cupboard as a shelf. Just because it will look odd having a freezer in the loo!

It's a sealed frozen box that you will only be opening on occasions when you need something. Nobody is going to be rummaging in it mid shit/arse wipe.

I agree that people worry way too much.
Other than wash my hands after the toilet and when handling food, I do none of those things and am never ill. In fact I know only one person in my office who washes their hands before eating (and its not me!). I know of plenty of pet owners who allow all sorts of unhygienic practices, but aren't constantly ill.
I wonder if there are any studies that show the cautious people actually have better health than the more relaxed ? Obviously I know there are plenty showing how germs spread, but wonder whether it actually translates to negative health outcomes for individuals, or if the immunity acquired balances it.

fancyacuppatea · 12/12/2022 09:27

I always use thermal gloves when I'm delving into the depths loading/taking stuff out of the freezer.
I don't wear them when I have a wee, and I wash my hands.

My friend has a massive bootroom/downstairs (guest) bathroom at the far end of her house. It has a huge chest freezer in it. Really good use of space.

Cinderellla · 12/12/2022 00:23

Why? The ice cream is in a carton in a sealed freezer.
I presume you poo in a toilet.

LoopyLoo1991 · 12/12/2022 09:58

BF only has a tiny Fridge section in his Fridge-freezer and has a bigger fridge in the hall by his bathroom. Grills in heat exchanger at back warlm the surrounding area. His kitchen is tiny & hall is a convenient spot.
