Spare freezer in downstairs loo?

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 18:05

Give it to me true, mumsnet. AIBU to put a spare freezer (and store food in it!) in our downstairs bathroom? Bathroom is huge. But yes it does have a toilet there.

Don’t feel there’s much more to the AIBU than that. Spare freezer currently taking up space in the living room, which is silly, and yes I do really feel the need for it for batch cooking and keeping all my cheats chopped veg or when things are on offer. We do have a fridge/freezer in the kitchen but freezer section is very narrow and not up to snuff. I do plan down the line to buy as huge a fridge / freezer as we can afford and that can fit in the space but for now - is it disgusting to keep a freezer in the toilet, basically .. ? I think I probably know the answer but it would fit so well there!

Of course you can do it.
Germs are hardly going to be able to leap into a sealed metal box then wiggle their way inside all the individual food packaging.
Of course, every time I read any thread on MN about perfectly normal things, there are people being over dramatic and being horrified at very normal things, so I doubt the MN vote will go the same way as if you asked 1000 random people in the street.

Notanotherone6 · 11/12/2022 18:37

Gross. Definitely not.

loislovesstewie · 11/12/2022 18:37

I used to put the extra freezer under the stairs because I knew I couldn't have a socket in the bathroom. Shaver sockets are OK but not the ordinary ones.

NEmama · 11/12/2022 18:38

I didn't think regular sockets were allowed in bathrooms

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/12/2022 18:39

It’s fine but it does seem a bit gross, so for guests I’d find a way to disguise what it is, if you care what people think. But I would move heaven and earth for extra freezer space, so if it was my only option, I’d go for it.

TinySaltLick · 11/12/2022 18:42

Would also double up as an easy place to store stool samples if you decided to keep a diary of your movements

gamerchick · 11/12/2022 18:42

Is there even a plug socket in there?

Personally where there's a socket, it's fair game to me.

Mosaic123 · 11/12/2022 18:44

When I was young we had a big freezer in our garage.

My Dad varnished a piece of furniture in the garage ( a particularly smelly varnish) and we had to throw all the food in the freezer away as it tasted of varnish.

This was in the early 1970s, in the early days of home freezers so maybe they are better now.

The motor sucked the smell in.

Judgyjudgy · 11/12/2022 18:45

Ew!!! Nope!

If I went to a house and the freezer or fridge was in the bathroom, I wouldn't want to eat there.

Me too. It is probably irrational but there you are.

Hankunamatata · 11/12/2022 18:49

Inlaws do something similar with cjest freezer. Mil keeps it covered with a big table cloth - though do wonder if it's a fire hazard

Not irrational.

I wouldn't either.

TheCraicDealer · 11/12/2022 18:50

Yes I would do it, once you get the power sorted. I’d get some kitchen units and get an intergrated freezer and maybe a larder unit (for brooms and other stuff that’s awkward to store) beside it. It would be more pricey but ultimately you’d also get more storage and it wouldn’t look like a random freezer plonked beside the loo.

Well it is irrational isn't it - as it doesn't impact the utility of the item nor toilet, it's just a few people reacting to having the two objects near each other

I'm not sure how things were manufactured in the 70s, but the motor just compresses gas inside a closed loop - which isn't even inside the freezer. The motor isn't sucking in anything

justthebasics · 11/12/2022 18:55

@Popskipiekin our downstairs loo is a "utility room" - toilet, sink, boiler, washer, dryer, hanging rail, ironing board storage and ... a chest top freezer. Works well. So maybe you just need to restyle yours as a utility room rather than a bathroom.

girlmom21 · 11/12/2022 18:57

Is it possible to create two separate rooms - so just put up a stud and a door?

Blossomtoes · 11/12/2022 18:59

Ours is in the garage where I’ve found mouse droppings on the lid before now. The freezer lid won’t be lifted at the same time as the loo lid, will it? I can’t see the problem.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/12/2022 18:59

If it's big and not your only bathroom -I don't see an issue at all - think of it asa utility room with a loo.

Puckthemagicdragon · 11/12/2022 19:16

A' la parking threads, can we have a floor plan? You can have a socket in the bathroom if it's in a covered box.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 11/12/2022 19:22

A lot of houses have toilets directly off the kitchen. I don’t see how this is any different.

loislovesstewie · 11/12/2022 19:28

The rules used to be that there had to be 2 doors between a kitchen and a bathroom, i. e there had to be a lobby between them, that is no longer the case, but there is still a door between the kitchen and bathroom /loo.

RocketIceLollie · 11/12/2022 19:28

My parents have a utility room which has a washing machine, and yes a freezer and a loo. The loo does have a full height side screen however that perhaps diverts any passage for germs from the loo to the freezer....

I think the big problem however is the presence of the bath and the potential large volume of water close to the electrical freezer....

As for guests getting up in arms at the horror of a loo in the same room as a freezer, just direct any guests to use the loo upstairs.

Georgyporky · 11/12/2022 19:32

I'd certainly do it, if I could plug it in.
No-one would use the loo & then go rummaging in the freezer without washing their hands - would they?

pocketvenuss · 11/12/2022 19:32

mum11970 · 11/12/2022 18:30

Would you be able to close the bathroom door with the lead from the freezer going out? If you are in the UK you cannot legally have a plug socket fitted unless it is more than 3m from the edge of the bath and no professional electrician would put one in for you.

what about distance to shower?
