Spare freezer in downstairs loo?

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 18:05

Give it to me true, mumsnet. AIBU to put a spare freezer (and store food in it!) in our downstairs bathroom? Bathroom is huge. But yes it does have a toilet there.

Don’t feel there’s much more to the AIBU than that. Spare freezer currently taking up space in the living room, which is silly, and yes I do really feel the need for it for batch cooking and keeping all my cheats chopped veg or when things are on offer. We do have a fridge/freezer in the kitchen but freezer section is very narrow and not up to snuff. I do plan down the line to buy as huge a fridge / freezer as we can afford and that can fit in the space but for now - is it disgusting to keep a freezer in the toilet, basically .. ? I think I probably know the answer but it would fit so well there!

The distance is from bath or shower to the socket. Utility rooms which have a loo in them aren't covered by this rule, I think the distance is much less, from memory it might be 300mils.

Would you be able to close the bathroom door with the lead from the freezer going out? If you are in the UK you cannot legally have a plug socket fitted unless it is more than 3m from the edge of the bath and no professional electrician would put one in for you.

This. It's illegal to have a 3 pin socket in the bathroom

Beautiful3 · 11/12/2022 19:36

Yes its fine.

minipie · 11/12/2022 19:38

Can you draw a floorplan of the downstairs? I wonder if it might be possible to carve a large cupboard off the bathroom which is accessed from eg the hallway or kitchen, and put the freezer into that cupboard - this is more work of course but solves the plug issue and any hygiene concerns.

FTY765 · 11/12/2022 19:38

Logically, I know it's a sealed box and all the food will be bagged/boxed inside AND that it will be throughly cooked prior to eating.
But it is just gross to store food in a toilet, sorry.

StrawberryWater · 11/12/2022 19:43

No. Toilets spray microorganisms of what’s in the bowl when you flush (up to 6 feet). Not sure I want frozen faecal matter and piss with my chips and peas.

Unless you shut the loo lid on every flush (which you can’t guarantee with guests) then it’s a bad idea to keep the freezer anywhere near a toilet.

Britinme · 11/12/2022 19:50

What wall will the freezer be against? Would it be possible to channel a conduit through the wall and put an electrical socket on the other side? Honestly unless the freezer door is open at the same time as the toilet is flushed (seems unlikely) I can't see a problem. I also like the suggestion about carving out a cupboard from the bathroom with the door to it opening from the hallway outside.

No way because of this 🤮 ^^

loislovesstewie · 11/12/2022 19:54

Which is why you should keep your toothbrush well away from the loo!

Britinme · 11/12/2022 19:56

Unless your freezer door is open at the same time as the loo is flushed, you won't get any frozen excretory material in there. Obviously you have to keep the outside wiped down. Do you keep your toothbrush in your bathroom? How do you feel about that?

BloodAndFire · 11/12/2022 19:56

Yuk. No.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/12/2022 19:59

Great idea and pop a couple of toilet rolls in the freezer - lovely cooling effect after a spicy curry. 😓

IDontWantToBeAPie · 11/12/2022 20:10

It's fine imo. It's not like you're pissing on the freezer...

Mossstitch · 11/12/2022 20:14

Weird isn't it, we all keep our toothbrushes in the bathroom and stick them straight in our mouths but our stomachs are turned at the thought of frozen food inside plastic bags, inside a sealed container in the bathroom🤔 but no I couldn't do it but would look at ways of changing the room, eg toilet behind another door or freezer in a cupboard.

loislovesstewie · 11/12/2022 20:20

Actually I don't keep my toothbrush anywhere near the loo. I used to work as a housing officer for a local authority and was told donkeys years ago about the spray coming out of a flushed loo. My toothbrush now resides in a cupboard and the lid is down on the loo prior to flushing. It's why loos have lids.

LikeTearsInRain · 11/12/2022 20:25

When you open the door poo particles in the air, from farts and poops and what is thrown into the air from flushing will get in there and stay on your packaging and in the ice

pocketvenuss · 11/12/2022 20:25

BloodAndFire · 11/12/2022 19:56

Yuk. No.

Presume your loo isn't in the bathroom with your toothbrush then

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 11/12/2022 20:30

You’re all bonkers. It’s fine.

Popskipiekin · 11/12/2022 20:45

Thank you all, all contributions hugely valued. It’s why I posted. My initial reaction to the idea of putting it in the bathroom was a mixture of: 1) how amazing, it’s literally the only place with space; crossed with 2) a number of people - possibly myself included - are going to find it quite gross… I dismissed it but then DH mentioned it again this eve, as the freezer is right there in the living room as a literal white elephant in the room, and we really need to put it somewhere. So I thought I’d canvass opinions.
Am pleasantly surprised at the number who feel it’s ok. And grateful for wise logical knowledgable heads with all the distances and whatnot re sockets etc.
The answer is that it would be push, 3m wise, unless we rejig the bathroom (put a shower in, say, as opposed to the bath), and I’m not going to do that.
Under the stairs is a real possibility, we just need to get a bookcase and bring out all our boxes of books!

Britinme · 11/12/2022 20:46

You could always put a bookcase in the bathroom...

5128gap · 11/12/2022 20:57

msbevvy · 11/12/2022 18:11

I some countries it is normal to have the washer and dryer in the bathroom. Could you move those in there and put the freezer where they were? They can be stacked one on top of another if necessary.

Well that would never do, would it? What about if the toilet germs got on the clothes, and later on you brushed against the freezer while wearing them? I've never heard anything so grimly, grossly vile in my entire life.😁

Spectre8 · 11/12/2022 21:09

Well that is the point of the toilet lid to put it down before you flush! And I keep my toothbrush in the cabinet.

I only think its gross cos if you don't always put the lid down the outside of the freezer will get 'sprayed so unless your wiping the surface each time your then carrying germs onto the food packaging etc and then into the kitchen

onemorerose · 11/12/2022 21:18

What about faecal particles in the air. They will surely land on your freezer so would you open it, wash hands get item and then maybe shut it with your elbow lol. I’d try to divide up the room if possible or put it under the stairs.

onemorerose · 11/12/2022 21:25

Just read the last few posts. I don’t want to think about my toothbrush in the bathroom now. This thread has taken me down a weird path because I do think it wouldn’t be so bad to have a bookcase in there. And let’s not pretend I’ve never had my phone in the bathroom with me!

Inextremis · 11/12/2022 21:26

Ah, it'll be fine. Growing up, my best friend had a freezer in their loo, and they kept their pet rats (caged) on top of it. We all lived.
