To ask what words you really hate?!

I really hate the words ‘teaming’ and ‘pairing’ - as in ‘I am teaming this hat with these gloves’ or ‘She paired the silk blouse with the red skirt’. Just fuck off.

It’s like nails down a blackboard for me 🤣

Hack, unless it's used in the correct context of taking a horse out for a hack

Or hacking your way through a tree trunk, using an axe.

This life hack will drop your jaw! No, it really won't.

I did add extra things hack was acceptable for like hair and hacking a slice of cake etc ;)

Exclusive - such a horrible word when you think about it - basically saying something is especially nice because it excludes people.

Scooopsahoy · 12/12/2022 19:14

Eaterie / eateries. I have a friend who always uses these instead of cafe or restaurant. I have to grit my teeth every time!

And discerning - ie "we cater for the discerning client". No, you just cater for rich people. We can all be discerning, but can't necessarily afford it!

Poorly. Particularly adults who describe themselves as poorly. My 45 year old colleague came in the other day and said "I'm feeling really poorly today" and it just made me want to slap her.

I don't mind 'poorly', but I dislike the term 'fluey' and especially 'a bit fluey'. People are not fluey; they have the flu, and, if they truly do, there's usually no 'a bit' about it!

Hospitals used to give one-word condition reports to the press. The words were always the same no matter which hospital you rang. There were about five of them and I don't remember them all but they included comfortable; critical and poorly.

You'd think critical was the worst condition but the real worst was poorly. That word meant you were at death's door. So tell your "poorly" colleague to buck up.

Comfortable isn't all it seems either. Someone came into the office on crutches six weeks after a report on a car accident especially to ask us whether we'd be bloody comfortable with two broken legs. It wasn't kind to point out that we were only the messengers.

Hospitals don't do that any more.

This has just reminded me how much I hate people saying “full of cold”….so you have a cold? Arghhh

CulturePigeon · 14/12/2022 18:45

Mainly pretentious or brainless copying from the US such as:

gifting (it's giving!)
vacation instead of holiday
staycation to mean a UK holiday
Can I get? instead of May I have?

Also US emphasis on things like ice cream, apple pie. It used to be plain old ice cream, apple pie. No problem with actual American speakers - just English ones trying to copy it - or more dozily - not even registering the difference.

On the other hand, I've never understood the problem with 'moist', which is always picked on for some reason.

Classy is a silly word - and I think that's been done to death on here! I get the impression people who use it mean something like 'poised, sophisticated, understated, courteous, elegant' etc but I wish they'd use those more accurate words!

SinnerBoy · 15/12/2022 01:39

My daughter is terrible for doing American emphases in speech. It drives me mad.

EllesB · 15/12/2022 02:38

Boob. The other day I saw someone here write something to the effect of “baby wakes around 6 times a night but settles with boob” and I nearly threw up in my mouth. Using it that way just strikes me as utterly vile for some reason.

pompomdaisy · 15/12/2022 02:47

'At a granular level' - when did it become the thing to say?

Also 'gotten'

Thepossibility · 15/12/2022 03:01

Used often on here, pop.
' Pop to the shop'. You pop a balloon, not yourself to places.
Both ‘picky' and ‘bits'.
Poorly just sounds really pathetic to me.
