I really hate the words ‘teaming’ and ‘pairing’ - as in ‘I am teaming this hat with these gloves’ or ‘She paired the silk blouse with the red skirt’. Just fuck off.

It’s like nails down a blackboard for me 🤣

“Could of” and “reign in”. How thick are some people.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 15/12/2022 06:24

‘ beyond’ as an intensifier.

“It’s beyond annoying.”

”Oh? I thought it was just this side and slightly to the left of annoying.”

‘iconic’ used to mean ‘notable’

”Messi scored an iconic goal.”

But the word that really pisses me off at the moment is ‘on’.

”…a uniformed policeman there, watching on.”

No! Just ‘watching’. What’s the ‘on’ for? What do you think the difference is between ‘watching’ and ‘watching on’? Fuckwit.

Summerbabypending · 15/12/2022 06:41

Hubby - I just find it toe curling

VeganFromSveden · 15/12/2022 06:57

Beaker
gotton
simples
“Put your coat on” but only when it’s obvious that it’s a jacket that you are wearing.

malificent7 · 15/12/2022 06:58

Woke...used to describe people with a social conscience.
Hollibobs.
Gifted

They seem to have mixed "watchi2 with "looking on." See as well "step foot."

The way that deliver is used; "We'll deliver a policy," "We deliver an excellent service." Surely you enact / carry out a policy and provide a service?

As for "delivering excellence," please, go away and come to some embarrassing harm!

WalkingOnTheCracks · 15/12/2022 09:32

See as well "step foot."

Standard Americanism. My Yank OH uses it. Drives me nuts.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 15/12/2022 09:36

‘Equally as’ As in ‘Dec is irksome, and Ant is equally as irritating.’

No.

It’s either ‘equally irritating’ or ‘as irritating’. You don’t need both.

Oh YES! Especially when teaching is called 'delivering the curriculum' and just about everything is called 'delivering outcomes'. And the latest abomination: 'deliverables'.

MoggyMittens23 · 15/12/2022 10:50

Hun

MasterBeth · 15/12/2022 11:02

"Can I do?", which is the new "Can I get?"

"Can I do an oat milk latte?"

The fuck?

MasterBeth · 15/12/2022 11:03

"Foot race".

limitedperiodonly · 15/12/2022 11:06

Nips instead of nipples

limitedperiodonly · 15/12/2022 11:07

Though the more I look at "nipples" written down I accept it is a silly word. But nips is not an improvement.

And the latest abomination: 'deliverables'.

We have that at work, I'm in the offshore survey business. When I started, during the mid 90s, we actually delivered the raw data, processed data, charts and ring bound reports, so I see why they still get called that. Paper charts are still an occasional part of that.

NerrSnerr · 15/12/2022 11:51

Yum, as in 'why not make carrots and chips. Yum!'.

Why the yum?? Why is it needed?

StarlightLady · 15/12/2022 15:04

There is no rhyme nor reason to this and I know it is in common use in north America but I hate the word "panties", it just sounds so childish.

OoooohMatron · 15/12/2022 15:47

Moreish.
Tasty, especially when used to describe something sweet.
Hubby
Staycation
Play date
Date night
Lush
Artisan (oh fuck off)
So many words annoy me but I don't hold it against whoever says them!

God yeah that's gross!

OoooohMatron · 15/12/2022 15:54

Doingtheboxerbeat · 12/12/2022 07:58

Mine are all American expressions, sorry 😳
Panties
Pants as in trousers
Fanny as in bottom( I also hate this in this context)

And the normal ones such as nibbles and picky bits and gusset.

Pants meaning trousers is also common in the North West. I'm a Northerner living in the SE and have had few funny looks saying pants!

StarlightLady · 15/12/2022 16:40

@OoooohMatron - You get an even funnier look if you ask a friend you are planning going out for an evening with "are you going to wear pants". 😂

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/12/2022 16:56

'Massively'. Very overused and almost always a large overstatement.

SinnerBoy · 15/12/2022 18:25

OoooohMatron · Today 15:47

Artisan (oh fuck off)

And artisanal...

As for pants meaning outerwear, it's normal in Northeast England.

CharitySchmarity · 15/12/2022 18:33

Telly
Hubby
Blush instead of blusher
A red lip, a statement shoe, etc
Antisocial instead of unsociable (antisocial is something a lot worse!)

FlyingPandas · 15/12/2022 18:34

My personal hates

cuppa
pud or puds
hubby
bubs or bubba
packed or packing when describing either food ('packed with nutrition') or behaviour ('packing on the PDA'). These last in particular make me want to break things. No idea why.
