I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

It is jealousy. They might not admit it but it is.

I have no skin in this game, Im half Scottish and live in the borders. I call it how I see it and many of my fellow Scots have huge chips onntheir shoulder.

What about the ABE's in Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina?

Are they all jealous too?

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:58

I'm still not getting the jealousy comments. If we were going to be jealous surely we'd be jealous of a team like Brazil (well until Croatia came along) or Argentina?!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/12/2022 22:48

Bitter because England have gone quite a long way again

I think you will find England made a laughing stock of themselves for those in the home countries that don't support them, those people will be drunk on hilarity at Kanes miss.

Its irrelevant how far you go unless you win, no one remembers who france beat in the semis to win last time around.

Mañanarama · 10/12/2022 22:58

Canthave2manycats · 10/12/2022 22:52

What about NI???

They don’t seem to be as spiteful about the other nations!!

I would absolutely be rooting for any of the other UK nations. Sad that people in Scotland and Wales were cheering on France, disappointing.

Georgeskitchen · 10/12/2022 22:58

Anyone but England generally means Wales Scotland and Ireland so I doubt England are too bothered
So just crack on

flflflf · 10/12/2022 22:58

so basically here people are against the behaviour of the supporters and the media and not related to the team or the players. Singing "it's coming home" is a huge crime apparently. I can see how it's embarrasing. But surely other countries have their own way of supporting their teams in equally supposedly "shameful" terms? If it comes down to the behaviour of the players, coach, their entitledness or lack thereof, their talent surely england are doing a good job? in which case it boils down to xenophobia or jealousy. If you don't like the coverage, watch coverage from a different non English country! Get over it. it's called "supporting your team". It's not an indication of being up yourself. The team have not indicated a superiority complex. The shoutings are of a few. Not the many. Lol at these comments.

The Women's Euros

but yet they couldn’t bet Scotland last time they played

Right? Okay? Surely you understand that that doesn't change the fact that England are the better team?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/12/2022 23:00

They played well tonight though. Not well enough obviously but I don't think they're a laughing stock in the slightest

I dont care about other nations football teams. ABE makes me cringe with embarrassment for how ignorant they are.

tobee · 10/12/2022 23:01

There won't be a U.K. team because it would not reflect well on the Scottish FA.

There's plenty of coverage of Wales that was very pro them.

Most English supporters I know think the ABE is just a massive chip on the shoulder. But if you say that out loud (unless you're an EDL type) you get shat on. No amount of passive aggressive 😂 emojis will change that.

Considering the huge pay and prestige a lot of the current England have they seem to have been not at all arrogant and I barely know who the Wags are. I put that down to Southgate and hope he stays.

Genuinely definitely is not irrelevant how far you go if you do not win. Unless fail so early on that no one even notices you were ever there.

FlutterbButterfly · 10/12/2022 23:02

Cwcwbird · 10/12/2022 21:32

I think sometimes it's the behaviour of the fans and supporters who don't do England any favours. I'm Welsh and would normally support England but then I heard about the sun advertising in support of the England team on buses in France and I just don't want to be associated with it! It made me want France to win to piss people like that off

I'm English (but also British) and during the group stages you would have thought I was also Welsh (I'm not but you catch my drift) 🤔, obviously England v Wales I was rooting for England but I felt and I really did for Wales. Don't stereotype.

Because they still can’t shut up
about 1966 and the media ram it down our throats at every opportunity.

it’s like in other sports if a Scottish person does well they’re British but as soon as they fuck up they’re Scottish. It’s wearing

That's all in your imagination

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/12/2022 23:03

I have a Welsh friend who lives in England married to an English woman and has kids who sound English.

He had a right royal rant on FB during the last world cup about so many of his Welsh F&F doing the whole ABE thing. He said that he was proud to support any of the home nations doing well in a sporting event and that the people shouting loudest for Wales in the rugby (6 nations? World cup? I dunno!) were his English friends. He went properly Librarian Poo about it (if you know, you know!) and has said that although he thinks they still post this shit, he sees a lot less of it on his feed these days and none at all this time! He thinks they just all unfollowed him and did "blocked but not quite blocked" thing on him seeing them!

But according to him, the ABE thing seems to be mainly amongst older people now, the younger generations find it all a bit embarrassing. Perhaps thats because unlike their grandparents, they dont spend their whole life in the echo chamber that is living in a 10 mile radius of where they were born. A good thing I feel!

ExcuseeeeMe · 10/12/2022 22:53

erm, to name just two this year - England won the Euros in womens football this year, and the England cricket team won the T20 cup last month.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2022 23:00

You said that ABE is down to jealousy, I would assume as you perceived people are jealous of the standard of the team or England's successes over their own. If it's just jealousy how do you explain ABE sentiment in countries which perform perform better than England?

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/12/2022 23:05

HAving another thought, I have 2 irish friends who will shout for Ireland against England but will shout for both in matches against other teams. My English cousins wife is Korean and will always shout for England, unless they are playing Korea!

FlutterbButterfly · 10/12/2022 23:05

@CCwcwbird I was referring to you being welsh, just re read and think it may have come across rudely- no intention! Stereotype comment was referring g to me!

The Women's Euros

Can’t say I follow woman’s football. Should have specified I was asking what the English mens team have won in recent times.

tobee · 10/12/2022 23:05

"What about the ABE's in Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina? "

I didn't see any ABE in those countries but I did see sone Brazil supporters in amongst Saudi Arabia supporters loving it when Argentina were beaten in the group stages by SA

It's only thick, bitchy, xenophobic members of countries. I've lived in one of those countries and most aren't like that at all. Maybe if you are like that yourself you assume everyone is?
