I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

There are comments on here claiming some posters don’t get Andy Murray’s sense of humour. Fair enough, maybe they don’t.

Has it occurred to those same posters they don’t get the irony of the song “it’s coming home” - give you a clue, it was written and performed by 2 comedians.

It's only thick, bitchy, xenophobic members of countries. I've lived in one of those countries and most aren't like that at all. Maybe if you are like that yourself you assume everyone is?

Intelligent members of those countries definitely aren't like that

KimberleyClark · 10/12/2022 23:07

I’m Welsh and my DH is English. I was supporting England tonight with my DH and really felt for Harry Kane.

erm, to name just two this year - England won the Euros in womens football this year, and the England cricket team won the T20 cup last month.

As the joke goes.....

Men - Its coming home, its coming home....

Women - Will you please just go and bring it home?

Men - Yeah, sure....

Women - You said you'd bring it home and you havent, are you going to or what?

Men- Stop fucking nagging!

Women - Oh FFS.....we'll just get it ourselves.

Best TV moment EVER was watching the Lionesses invading the press conference and Sabina's sheer joy at watching them!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2022 23:09

I think it’s only football and it shouldn’t be taken so seriously either way. So by all means support England, support ABE or decide to support Morocco because they’re the underdogs or whatever- but do it with a light heart, with a bit of irony.

People who treat it like it’s an actual war or something get on my tits.

I would say France are the better team 😂

You're right, they are. France are ranked 4th in the world, England 5th. Wales 19th. Scotland 40th.

tobee · 10/12/2022 23:09

"Can’t say I follow woman’s football. Should have specified I was asking what the English mens team have won in recent times."

Oh that's handy isn't it?

How about getting to the final of the euros last time?

Yes France were the better team tonight.

💯 I feel bad for Harry Kane after the awful scenes after the euro 2020 final. The abuse those poor players got after from English fans. I hope he has a strong support around him .

walkinginsunshinekat · 10/12/2022 22:58

I think you will find England made a laughing stock of themselves for those in the home countries that don't support them, those people will be drunk on hilarity at Kanes miss.

Its irrelevant how far you go unless you win, no one remembers who france beat in the semis to win last time around.

Yes the thick, bitchy, xenophobic ones will, although I doubt they'd ever achieve a fraction of what Kane has

This is true too - that song is supposed to be humorous

Americano75 · 10/12/2022 23:11

You can't chant 'Are you Scotland in disguise?' at teams you're beating then wonder why said supporters don't want you to do well.

Maldedos · 10/12/2022 23:11

My dgs is Welsh so I wanted Wales to do well.
However I’m so proud of the England team as they did really well and Hernandez should have been sent off tonight.
And to add I live in France so my neighbours will obviously be pleased with the result.
My US friend even commented that England were playing France and the referee tonight, that’s how biased it felt at times.

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/12/2022 23:12

I was over the moon when the lionesses won the euros.

Fantastic thanks for sharing I had no idea Scotland were 40th . Even more amazing that they couldn’t even get a win against a team like Scotland so low down on the league tables .

DarkShade · 10/12/2022 23:12

I think it grates that the English seen to just assume that England is also the football team of Scotland. And also obviously it's tied to being pro independence. If you see England as the main force behind a union that you don't wish to be part of, and you see football support as patriotic act of supporting your country and it's values, you're not going to want England to do well.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/12/2022 23:13

We were the underdogs tonight and I wouldnt have put a bet on us winning. France are a good side and are likely to be the favourites (not checked this).

But funny how people who think England never win anything "dont count" womens sport isnt it........

Even Baddiel and Skinner had the decency to admit that the women did what the boys couldnt, in their updated version of Three Lions, whilst hoping that England's teams would do the double. It would have been fucking EPIC if we had! Historic in fact.

Yeah, you would have expected that they would, being so much better 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coxspurplepippin · 10/12/2022 23:14

I don't know about England harping on about 1966, but the Scottish 'anthem' is all about 1314, so if we're wanging on about relying on past glories, well........

JoonT · 10/12/2022 23:15

As an English person with Scottish and Irish ancestors (most English people have some kind of Scottish or Irish or Welsh ancestry), it doesn’t make me angry, just sad. Genuinely sad. I guess it’s the same all over the world. New Zealanders often complain about Australians, and no doubt people in Chile dislike Argentinians, etc.

DisneyPrincesss · 10/12/2022 23:09

Really? Yet Germany and Croatia 11th and 12th.

How are these rankings done, by envelope?

”The English” who I know are very well aware that Scotland has its own team🤔

Just another example of making tenuous things up as a reason to find it “grating”.

MrsRinaDecker · 10/12/2022 23:17

I’m English but live in Scotland and really struggle with ABE. It was awful for my kids when they were at school and lead to some quite nasty bullying (and my kids aren’t even particularly bothered about football).
It makes me feel unwelcome in the place I’ve made my home. And the sentiment really doesn’t go both ways.. most of the English fans I know would cheer on any of the home nations. Slightly different, but I remember us all cheering for Ireland when they did well in the 1990 World Cup.

I have lived in two of these countries and my partner is from one of them and there is definitely some ABE's.

I am not ABE btw, I was really rooting for England in the Euros ams was delighted when the ladies won. I do think your OTT reaction might be another piece of evidence in the why ABE sentiment? Instead of actually engaging with the question you immediately tried to insult me.
