I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

Keep telling yourselves it’s jealousy…everything is about jealousy on mumsnet isn’t it? There’s a bit more to it than that. I personally don’t care about football but they ooze arrogance and it’s not a nice trait.

I think the word is bitter

Bitter of what ? What have England won in recent times ?

flflflf · 10/12/2022 22:47

VinoDino · 10/12/2022 22:32

Definitely this.

or maybe they are just keen supportive fans? most england fans I know are humble, care about other teams as well and not lacking in self awareness. I have english friends who support croatia, morocco, wales, france, germany. The fake rivalry is for idiots and usually not the english fans' position. It's trying to smear supporters, tar them with the same brush. Those fanaticists are probably the same in every nation. get over it. I am supporting croatia and morocco now, glad when some non-english teams win, sad when some non-english teams lose. you're being embarrassing trying to make out everyone is just a one-track mind mode of supporting. It is simply not true. The embarrassment is more in your court for assuming that's normal or the status quo. Rubbish.

FannyFifer · 10/12/2022 22:47

Every single game in this World Cup the English commentators have to get in some mention of 1966, it's fucking tedious.
Was watching the Portugal game & there was some inane comment around how it reminded them of 1966, everything links to England.
Just want decent commentary without that nonsense every 5 minutes.

walkinginsunshinekat · 10/12/2022 22:42

Jealous of what? Can't be English success lol!

It's all relative isn't it. Successful in comparison to the people supporting anyone but England.

MrsDooDaa · 10/12/2022 22:48

There are lots of word for this - none of them are particularly positive.

And to blame BBC coverage as a reason for ABE is ridiculous. Hardly the fault of the England team.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/12/2022 22:48

Bitter because England have gone quite a long way again

MatronicO6 · 10/12/2022 22:48

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/12/2022 22:41

For the most part yes thas all it is

It's not jealousy, plenty of people who may have ABE sentiment have expressed their reasons for this mentality, no one has mentioned jealousy. This notion is a perfect example of the smug superiority some people have cited on here. If it was down to jealousy of the standard of the football team, it'd be Anybody But Brazil.

I also don't think it can be attributed to media coverage as that would only explain Scotland, Wales, northern Ireland mood. Whereas ABE is not limited to UK, other countries won't be exposed to it.

user1487194234 · 10/12/2022 22:48

Am from Scotland but definitely supporting England tonight
They are our closest neighbour, why on earth would I support France 🤷‍♀️

Bitter about the complete lack of anything resembling success or even approaching it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

What was the score at the last Scotland England match I forget ?

StrawberryFlowers · 10/12/2022 22:51

It's just xenophobia. You get xenophobes in all countries I guess. They are not usually the brightest members of a population. Of course all xenophobes everywhere think that their xenophobia doesn't count as they've got a good reason. It's plain old bigotry however you dress it up.

When is Scotland's quarter final? Oh wait...

amonsteronthehill · 10/12/2022 22:52

It's the fans and the media and their loud, obnoxious sense of entitlement of 'football coming home' that puts me off supporting them. The current players all seem fairly decent, but I can't get past all the ridiculous noise about 'deserving' to win over all the other decent teams/players.

I was glad to see them go out because of it, tbh.

Thepeopleversuswork · 10/12/2022 22:52

healthadvice123 · 10/12/2022 22:13

@Thepeopleversuswork pathteic is looking down on others
So what about coming home its just a song thats stuck and a joke
Any other nation supports their team and have their own traditions etc and no one would put them down
Guarantee in morocco and france there not all saying omg im so embarassed everyone is getting behind our team

@healthadvice123 It’s Coming Home is absolute cringe. It hasn’t come home for over 50 years. Time for the penny to drop.

tobee · 10/12/2022 22:52

walkinginsunshinekat · 10/12/2022 22:39

England (men) just aren't good enough to win a major footie trophy, so who supports who against who doesn't matter.... there will always be petty rivalry but the UK isn't a high quality football nation, so always lose against the top tier teams, the men lack the hunger or pride that other countries have.

England beat no one of note before France & have done quite badly recently, yet were supposed to be a favourite (according to English pundits) - its ridiculous.

The women, once again, lead the way!

They really weren't favourites at all. It was, at best, might have a chance if...

It is jealousy. They might not admit it but it is.

I have no skin in this game, Im half Scottish and live in the borders. I call it how I see it and many of my fellow Scots have huge chips onntheir shoulder.

Canthave2manycats · 10/12/2022 22:52

Mañanarama · 10/12/2022 21:41

Why don’t we have a UK team? That would make more sense and prevent the England / Scotland / Wales divide.

What about NI???

Clearly nothing other than winning at being less excruciatingly awful. I didn't claim otherwise.

Bellagio40 · 10/12/2022 22:55

It’s pure jealousy as Scotland has not qualified for the World Cup since 1998!! And they have never made it past the first round.

I was sorry we were in the same group as Wales as I would loved to have cheered them on and did, except when they were playing England

but yet they couldn’t bet Scotland last time they played

Livelovebehappy · 10/12/2022 22:55

I think it’s a compliment to be honest. England have had so much more success in sport that Scotland and Wales could only ever dream of. If they were indifferent or cheering us, I’d think it was a bit patronising, but there’s something about the hatred towards us that makes me think they’re just obviously very jealous and very bitter. It’s a shame, as I cheer them on if they’re in anything, because I really do want them to win something/anything. It must be gut wrenching and pretty depressing to never win anything at all. Although Scotland did have Andy Murray…….
