I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

But it IS directed at other nationalities too, including England fans who always root against Scotland and Wales.

Blinkered beyond belief.

It really is. Look at the ridicule Ben Davies had from some England fans for speaking Welsh when responding to a question asked in Welsh. It’s our own native language! The French wouldn’t have been slated for giving interviews in French. It’s ridiculous. I have never heard the media urging the rest of the U.K. to get behind ABE it will never happen. Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland are seen as beneath them. I have no hatred for English people and I don’t actively support or not support them, I’m indifferent. The media is nauseating, though.

Florenz · 11/12/2022 19:48

The media is only concerned about ratings. Most people watching the football matches will be more interested in how the England team are doing than hearing about Wales, Scotland or NI.

The media is London centric but London is the capital city. Not just for English people but to Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland people as well.

I can't believe anyone actually thinks this but there you go....

Themisthefacts · 11/12/2022 21:31

I can see how we come across as arrogant . I mean a poster has literally just said on the thread that the English Premiership is more popular in Scotland than the SPL . Lost for words .

Thanks for saying this

Coxspurplepippin · 11/12/2022 21:42

All the football fans in the family support two teams - Scottish PL team which they've supported for at least 3 generations and have long standing family ties with, and EP teams which vary between family members - including Liverpool, Arsenal and Man U. They get slightly bored with the SPL sometimes.

DarkShade · 11/12/2022 21:44

God you guys are such racist xenophobic england haters, can't believe you watch the Scottish Premiership instead of the English one, the English would totally watch the Scottish one if roles were reversed don't you know.

I think the poster who made the claim doesn’t even realise that Scotland have their own premiership.

DwpDwp · 11/12/2022 21:55

The SPL is the most fan-attended league in Europe per capita.

They must be showing EPL games on the big screens or something.

Harry12345 · 11/12/2022 22:12

Thank you, and also someone has said that London is my capital city as a Scottish person! It’s so arrogant.

Womencanlift · 11/12/2022 22:48

DownNative · 11/12/2022 19:25

Aside from their own respective national teams, England IS the most supported team in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as a whole.

England's Premier League is the most popular football league in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The most popular players are also in the Premier league.

So, it's no surprise England receive more support in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as a whole than any of them manage as a whole in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Given the history and geographical proximity, you'd think Scotland team would be the most popular amongst Northern Ireland fans....but its actually England! Portugal is more popular amongst Northern Ireland fans than Scotland as well - a lot of that will be the Cristiano Ronaldo effect.

It's no wonder UK media will focus a lot on England in newspapers and so on since the demand is there in all four parts of the UK to justify it.

Aaah what a bubble you live in. Thanks for the laughs, I assume this post is a joke?

I screenshot it and sent it to a group chat I’m in. The Scots and Welsh in it rolled their eyes and the English were embarrassed that this is what he is being said by their fellow country person - assuming you are English as no non English person would be so ignorant

magicthree · 12/12/2022 06:18

No one has an issue with the former but ABE is simply racist claptrap spouted by bigots.

Oh for goodness sake, some of you need to get over yourselves. This sort of thing goes on all around the world, just substitute the E of ABE with the appropriate country. However, no-one else moans about it in the same way people have been doing on this thread. It's sport, not life - lighten up. If whining was a sport England would be the world champions every year, no-one else comes close.

Thesenderofthiscard · 12/12/2022 07:33

‘I do think that anyone who believes that the other UK countries should support England have really made a great case and have changed hearts and minds.

Aye! I presume this is dripping in sarcasm! 😅😅
I don’t understand why the English even care? I don’t care that you don’t like or understand us. I just assume you’re all a bit ignorant, but I don’t really care, not when it comes to sport anyway.

Thesenderofthiscard · 12/12/2022 07:34

‘Aside from their own respective national teams, England IS the most supported team in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as a whole.’

It’s REALLY REALLY not!

London is the capital of the United Kingdom. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.

London is the capital of the United Kingdom. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.’

thanks for that. Your stating the obvious doesn’t change the fact that people in regions would consider their capital to be their capital and not London!

RaraRachael · 12/12/2022 07:54

It's pathetic and childish.

We have a man In our town who actually flies a flag of whichever team England are playing against in his garden.
Imagine going to the bother and expense of buying all those flags just to prove a silly point 🙄

BabeRuthless · 12/12/2022 08:17

And the Wales team cheering was probably a reaction to the England camp celebrating when they found out they were getting Iceland in the next match. As far as England were concerned, they had a free ride onto the round beyond. I don’t blame Wales for rooting for the underdog.

The English media need to get over this idea of the English team being some kind of special entity that’s unlike any other. All this “there’s nothing quite like supporting England, there’s always drama” etc is an absolute nonsense. There’s been ups and downs and drama with every national team. Just look at Brazil or Spain or Germany. You’d think the whole footballing world revolves around England. That’s why the whole “it’s coming home” thing grates with so many other countries.

Probably aware of how to reliably get a rise.

The UK media is England centric because most people in the UK are English.

Hmmmm I wonder why people support other teams rather than England

Thesenderofthiscard · 12/12/2022 08:52

'The English media need to get over this idea of the English team being some kind of special entity that’s unlike any other.'

This. That and they bang on and ON when they win anything, generally sulk and complain about refs when they lose, and regularly claim successful N.Irish, Scottish Welsh sports people as 'British' but English ones as English.

I think the English should claim Millwall's slogan for their sports teams.
'No-one likes us, we don't care'

Thesenderofthiscard · 12/12/2022 08:59

'You actually sound jealous and resentful of England....😂'

Yeah, like that horrible kid in school who no-one liked... I bet his mum told him everyone was jealous of him too...

itsnowjoke · 12/12/2022 09:51

The pundits and sports media are still banging on about England even though they lost and came home last night!

just saw a reporter from Doha spend the whole slot talking about England, and how they and Southgate were ‘reflecting’ and looking forward to qualifying for the euros in 18 months.
Not a single mention of the upcoming
matches!
Absolutely sums up why lots of people cannot abide English football, and are happy that they are out!

This captures the issues with the English-centric media quite well. He did mention English commentary on the Welsh game but there was Welsh commentary available so that was incorrect. Otherwise it's a pretty accurate summary.

Cailleach1 · 12/12/2022 12:12

I think you will find England made a laughing stock of themselves for those in the home countries that don't support them, those people will be drunk on hilarity at Kanes miss.

It is not quite as simple as that in a corner of North Connemara (in the west of Ireland). There will be relatives (and their friends) of Harry Kane; practically cheering him on as one of their own. They certainly won't be 'laughing at his miss'. His father was born there and immigrated to England along with his parents when very young.
