I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

No, this thread is full of people crying that other nationalities won't support their football team. Honestly get a grip.

The victim mentality is incredible considering England's history.

It's football, it's really not that deep or that serious. The vast vast majority of Scottish, Welsh and Irish people who don't support England in football have no animosity to English people.

I'm from Dublin, other counties in Ireland hate us in sport and love to see us lose. My DH (from the west of Ireland) and his family cheer for whoever is playing against Dublin in Gaelic football, my friends from outside Dublin are the same. It's a rivalry thing, it doesn't mean they hate me or Dublin people in general. It's normal, it's exactly what I'd expect and I don't take it personally.

No its really not.

There is a huge difference between not supporting something and actively wanting it to fail.

No one has an issue with the former but ABE is simply racist claptrap spouted by bigots.

This is how I feel about it to. I know couples who will actively hope their partners team will fail, not because they hate them but the rivalry is funny. Its especially funny if one keeps mouthing about winning, then doesn't. Its sports.

Clearly you're not into competitive sports.

Football fans want their rival teams to lose all the time! It is totally normal.

Everton fans wanted Liverpool to lose the Champions League final, even though they are close neighbours (literally across the park from each other). That's what a local rivalry looks like.

Are Everton fans racist against other Liverpudlians?

You're being way over sensitive here.

When England played Wales the other week I wanted Wales to win with a US/Iran draw, putting Wales through with England.
Most people will support any of the home nations in football, rugby etc., it's some of the Celts who will support anyone against England, usually because their own team is tucked up in bed at home.

I would have wanted Wales to go through with England, so yes for that match I would have been happy for Wales to beat England so we could have both gone through.

I guess the hurt is still there from last night . I can’t be easy believing you are the best in the world and this time is it. Then getting a big dose of reality AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN

I can't see England supporting Wales if Wales had got further in the world Cup do you? (Note, I'm not a football fan at all) but it works both ways.

Exactly! I’m no more English than I am French. I’m Welsh. Will England now be supporting France??
It works both ways. Look up some England fan’s disgraceful comments about the late Welsh manager, horrendous. It’s just rivalry but agree some take it too far.

ganachee · 11/12/2022 16:52

England go in thinking they are the best team and it’s a walk in the park.

I - although appreciate may have misinterpreted what others meant by it - have always viewed the ‘football is coming home’ chant as tongue in cheek as until recently it was clear England just weren’t top tier in international football. I never expected us to get near winning. The last few years though the England team have improved and they could have won yesterday unlike many matches in many previous World Cup tournaments when we clearly were the worse team and didn’t deserve to win.

Want to address the actual content of my post, or are you just going to shout 'bigot' at anyone who disagrees with you?

Imagine thinking that a non-English person is racist for not supporting England.

Do you generally go through life looking for offence?

As I said previously on here, if England was out then I automatically would be supporting other home nations as I view myself as English first, then British next. This may be the difference as more from other home nations connect less with the notion of being British too which is fair enough. I appreciate they will have their legitimate reasons for this.

ganachee · 11/12/2022 17:02

Are you referring to Gary Speed? I am sorry to hear if some English fans were making horrible comments about him. That is grim.

That person has been at it all day calling racist and bigot to anyone that thinks differently to them.
God love them.

Talk about barrel scraping. Gary was loved by men English fans. You really are going low with this one. I loved Craig Brown, ex Scotland Manager but I'm not looking to be toxic. Craig epitomised, as did Gary, everything you would expect in a gentleman of the game.

Been debunked several times upthread - some poor sap actually did the stats.
Andy Murray is not British when he wins and Scottish when he loses in the media. It's simply not true.

No the same Guardian (the fucking Guardian!) article has been posted more than once. The fact that it had to be written in the first place speaks volumes.

There's a BBC link too, but I suppose you'll say that's biased against Scotland Grin

If you'd like to do the research yourself and come up with genuine figures I'd be interested.......

'England go in thinking they are the best team and it’s a walk in the park.'

I really don't think they do - well certainly no more than any other team in the tournament.

Agree if anything, they go in expecting to lose, probably with some justification.

Yup.

When Wales for further than England in Euro 2016, large swathes of England fans were rooting against Wales (the general sentiment being that England would never hear the end of it if Wales won).

And as a Welsh person….that’s totally fine. I’m not offended. We are not entitled to your support and it’s understandable that you don’t want your neighbours to have bragging rights.

I’m certainly not screaming ‘racism’ or ‘xenophobia’.

A few of the more fragile England fans in here need to get a sense of perspective and ditch the hypocrisy.

Maybe you did. I’m not here to argue. I saw what I saw. It’s a very small minority but some take things too far, unfortunately.
