I’m Scottish, I was brought up to be anti English, SNP mad household, despite having English grandparents. I’ve always thought it made no sense, England is part of the UK like we are. I now have an English dp who is step- parent to my child, I support England in football as does my dc, every match my social media is filled with support for any country playing against England, I don’t get it! Can someone explain the logic to me, I can’t be the only one surely!

If you truly believe that Wales have received exactly the same amount of tv coverage on tv over the past weeks as England I don’t know what to say to you .

No of course not. There's about 18 times as many people in England than there are in Wales. The TV coverage has to be proportionate based on what viewers want to see. And also based on how far the teams progress in the tournament.

DonnaHadDee · 11/12/2022 14:19

Even though I'm originally from Northern Ireland. My uncle played for Linfield, and NI at underage, and but for a recurring ham string issue that curtailed his career... you never know!

But since going to boarding school and working in south east England I've been an English team supporter (going to NI home football games is a toxic environment). I really thought this team had a great chance, and with a little luck could have done it. Sadly, it's often fine margins at that level.

Thank you that’s just proved my point . No matter what we will always be forced fed English bias on Uk media as they are bigger than the other home nations and therefore not as important . Now you may see why some want them out as quick as possible so we can just enjoy the other games.

Pugdogmom · 11/12/2022 14:21

Why do people care who others support 🤔? Support who you want, and don't see why it should affect anyone else's life?

MrsDooDaa · 11/12/2022 14:23

Maybe because there are a large number of English living in Scotland, that's why there is a lot of media coverage of the English games?

Brightstarowl · 11/12/2022 14:24

ExcuseeeeMe · 11/12/2022 13:52

Ah ok. So all the English people who chose to live in Scotland of which there is thousands should now only support Scotland. Got it.

No but they certainly shouldn't have half Scottish kids and encourage them to hate Scotland!!

Got that?

You actually sound jealous and resentful of England....😂

So bitter.

Ta deary, I need no education on 'your country's' history, especially from an MNer! You actually don't know my country.countries luv.

You accuse others of poor comprehension skills for daring to disagree with you, then write a post like that.

People berating others (especially the Irish) for not supporting England really do need a history lesson. If they genuinely do know their history, and still don't get it, they're the ones with the comprehension difficulties.

I have wonderful English family and friends and certainly don't hate English people, by the way. But the superior attitude and ignorance amongst some is hard to stomach. Especially those who are proud of their ignorance.

Only one team's fans have come to my country, ripped up seats in the stadium, throwing the debris onto the people (including children) below them and singing hateful sectarian chants. The violence was so bad the match had to be stopped. Guess who that was?

Nail on the head the whole world is jealous of the English mens teams success. That’s got to be it. They can’t stop winning trophies .

Bigspender19 · 11/12/2022 14:38

The desperation is palpable. Wales were knocked out sooner than England. I'm sure that counts for more coverage alone. I don't know why these posters don't just admit they loathe England. At least we could see them for what they really are.

Yes not supporting England when they play football makes you a bigot . Not supporting our closet neighbours France makes you a bigot. All the English fans celebrating when Germany got put out in the group stages in the pub I was in bigots .

can you not separate not supporting a country in a football tournament and loathing an entire country . Do you also loathe everyone in France as you weren’t supporting them last night ?

Wait a minute!

Exclusive UK broadcasting rights to Wales International football matches belongs to Welsh Channel S4C.

BBC and all the variants of ITV can only show a certain amount for Wales, IIRC.

From 2024, Viaplay will have exclusive UK broadcasting rights to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland games.

Channel 4 has secured the rights to show England's Nations League games, Euro 2024 qualifiers and friendlies. Beat ITV, BBC and Sky.

Contract deals affects how much BBC and ITV can show.

Does contract deals mean that at every half time for every match on tv the last few weeks half time has been dedicated to talking about the English team . Not the game that was just on?

I'm ABE as is my DH. It's football rivalry and not that serious. I blame Ben Shephard and his band of Little Englanders on Good Morning England. The media build up wasn't as painful this year because having the WC in Qatar was deemed a BAD THING.
Wait I'll check..... nope still ABE

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/12/2022 15:10

It would be fine it was just shown in England unfortunately it is shown around the whole of the UK not just England .

Why shouldnt it be shown throughout the UK?

We are all mixed and many Scots living in England and vice versa throughout all 4 home nations. Many of us are interested in and support the other teams.

My goodness, these coseted attitudes are really quite bizarre. What happened to the concept of equality and diversity and inclusion. Oh yes, applies to everybody except England and her people.

Now replace that with admitting you are a racist against POC and the forum would go into meltdown. As I said, England are fair game for abuse. There is absolutely no difference with the forms of prejudice and discrimination.

Hear hear

Its an absolute disgrace.

offmycloud · 11/12/2022 15:57

I'd not feel any way sensitive about it. With respect to the logic of it, my personal experience is from Netherlands. Everyone here was delighted to see the Germans out in group stages, the same with demise the "golden generation" of Belgian football, most people really really happy :) So I expect it is part of the experience with sporting neighbours.

I feel there is an additional factor with us, and it relates to our supporters. We've been at two Euros events, and if you want to cringe about something, that's a topic! Nobody wants to see English supporters, or Russians. It's a minority of them for sure, but a significant and impactful minority. In 2008 we saw Greece-Spain and Italy-Romania (I think it was Romania?) and the atmosphere in the locations was very very different to when our supporters are there.

So sorry for Kane. He's always been a true pro, and had really honed his skills and craft, and I think he's got better and better over time. He'll come back even stronger!

No, this thread is full of people crying that other nationalities won't support their football team. Honestly get a grip.

The victim mentality is incredible considering England's history.

It's football, it's really not that deep or that serious. The vast vast majority of Scottish, Welsh and Irish people who don't support England in football have no animosity to English people.

I'm from Dublin, other counties in Ireland hate us in sport and love to see us lose. My DH (from the west of Ireland) and his family cheer for whoever is playing against Dublin in Gaelic football, my friends from outside Dublin are the same. It's a rivalry thing, it doesn't mean they hate me or Dublin people in general. It's normal, it's exactly what I'd expect and I don't take it personally.
