AIBU TO BE FLOORED BY CONCERT TICKET PRICES??

Nofilter · 08/12/2022 19:26

I'm looking for a concert to take my DD (6) and her cousin a similar age to.. something like Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift.. or anyone who has a large enough following for an arena show and age appropriate.

At this age a good show with high end production, lights etc will be so much fun for them.

We both love Billy Eilish - that was £400 a ticket last year. I took my DD to Little Mix last year at a reasonable £66 per ticket...

Beiber is £140 per ticket for the cheapest seats... how do people go to these concerts any more?

I thought £66 was a little steep for LM!

I'm really not paying £420 to go to Beiber with two under 7s!

Guess it's either a west end type (Lion King etc) production or Disney arena show? Any other ideas OPs?

Maybe not but I get to judge people's shitty taste in music and why they bring up such bland, banal children...

Strong feelings towards a 6 year old.

The bands you've listed are shit, my ears were bleeding. Get some fucking taste.

How much do you think Lion King tickets are?

AclowncalledAlice · 09/12/2022 09:31

Dynamic pricing is a reason why some tickets are so expensive and many, many artists are against it. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept it goes like this'

Cost of setting up gig, promotors and artists fees, etc are all worked out and the price of the ticket is set.
Ticket agencies start to sell those tickets at the agreed price. The gig turns out to popular and is selling fast....the ticket agency algorithm kicks in and bumps the price up to beyond what was originally agreed and keeps doing so until it gets to the stage where people are being charged £100's for a standing area ticket which was originally priced at <£100.

The excuse the ticket sellers give is "to stop scalpers cashing in". so they become the touts instead. It has got to the stage where a lot of artists (such as Paul Heaton & Jacki Abbot to name just 2), are refusing to use certain sites (looking at you Ticketmaster), unless those sites expressly guarantee that they will not use dynamic pricing when it comes to selling their (the artists), tickets which is why they are selling for £30. Artists and venues that refuse to address the practice of dynamic pricing are just plain greedy as their fees have already been covered in the original price and they are fleecing the very people who they rely on for their success.

Not sure if that's the case with theatre tickets though.

There, rant over, as you were.

How about get some fucking taste. Yard act tickets £22.50, billynomates £17.50, the chats £20. All infinitely better than taylor fucking swift. Your children will thank you

How about not being a prick?

The world will thank you.

skyeisthelimit · 09/12/2022 09:42

Make sure that you always use the original selling site, not a resale site where the tickets can be horrendous prices. I only ever use ATG, Ticketmaster etc.

I just paid £100 a ticket for The Lion King UK tour.

Well aren't you a delight.

My DD's first music love was SClub7...not my taste at all but she discovered who each member of the band like musically so started listening to those artists, then started to listen to the artists those listened to and so on and so on. She now listens to a range of genres and all because at 9 years old she was into a pop group. I guess you came out of the womb listening to the kind of stuff you listen to now and weren't influenced by your peers or by listening to other groups before you decided to be one of those sanctimonious "I-was-into-them-before-anybody-else" music snobs that are laughed at.

Coming on to sing the praises of the wonderful Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott (ex Beautiful South) Their tour is fabulous. Tickets only £30 and includes hits from Housemartins (really showing my age) that i didnt expect. Wonderful night out with a working class duo who understand the cost of living!

My kids love seeing Paul and Jacqui, we are going again to see them next week

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 09/12/2022 11:06

What about a small family friendly festival instead - you could get a whole weekend for about the same as a night with a mix of artists and activities! Some do early bird and monthly payments too

Wychwood festival is great for that age range and some young teens and we’ve seen great artists there.

Truck is good for teenagers and young adults

Cornbury was good at times too but that’s fibished

I’ve heard good things about Wood too

all you need is a tent and basic cooking stuff and take food with your or buy onsite and make an adventure of it!

Wishingforwinter · 09/12/2022 11:43

I wouldn't have said Taylor would really be suitable for a 6 year old? (

I know it's Eras but probably half of it will likely be from Midnights...an album which has 6 explicit tracks on it. It'll be a concert with a fair amount of swearing. She also has explicit tracks in her previous albums (I think every album from Reptuation onwards has explicit tracks in)

It does make me sad though, I've set myself a strict budget of £250 per ticket and i'm accepting if i even get tickets at all they won't be decent seats (although UK prices are usually lower than US so i might be surprised) but I found a ticket from one of her earlier tours... £35 INCLUDING FEES and we were seven rows back on the floor.

Theatre tickets aren't cheaper but you can find deals on TodayTix or go on a midweek matinee. Lion King is also touring I think and the tour is typically cheaper.

Prices have risen steeply though. Dh used to go and see all sorts of people/bands years ago.

Saw Killers. Prices were ok. Got good tickets for Weeknd, he cancelled, now £86.

Also if it's the songs and concert experience they want rather than specifically seeing eg Beiber then don't dismiss tribute bands. Do your research first but there are some really good ones!

Good idea I'll take a look actually. She just LOVES IT!

My DD is particularly interested in concerts because it was my career until I had her. I am a founder of a number of large music events - not really a job that fits with being the mother I wanted to be so am a silent partner now - since she was 10 days old.

DD has been surrounded by conversations, videos, my contact with my partners from our festivals and music events etc so "wants to see what mummy did and does" for our living she's naturally inquisitive into who I was before becoming a Mum.

I've shared loads of fun stories and tales as our whole family was involved in my events for 13 years..

It's very sweet and I want to share a good show with her. It's just such a shame they are out pricing so many fans!

I do feel "festivaled out" after running them for 10+ years but a Rob Da Bank Bestival family one is fairly close to us and might be the thing to do actually... a day visit. I am not camping 😂

If you want theatre tickets there are lots of options to get them cheaper (admittedly better if you are flexible on dates). Many do lottery's - £25 for top price tickets. Check out seat plan & theatre monkey - often restricted views are not that bad at all if you look at photos from seat plans etc. sign up for all the mailing lists going and there are usually offers.

TodayTix does same day rush tickets every morning - again £25 ish.

Great idea thanks OP I'll take a look.

6 isn't too young for a concert depending on the child. I've taken DC1 to arena tours since aged 4 (seated tickets) and she loves them. DC2 is 7 and would hate to go.

Nofilter · 09/12/2022 21:31

Exhausteddog · 08/12/2022 20:17

It does seem to vary quite a lot. My teen DD is seeing Harry Styles next year and the tickets were 100 for standing/75 for seated (prob not a great view) then she's seeing Louis Tomlinson which was iirc 55/ticket. She's desperate to see Taylor Swift but I'm dreading how much those tickets will be.

Maybe something like summertime ball would be more suitable for younger children and not as expensive ?

I've just Googled summertime ball that is perfect! She obviously doesn't know her taste yet but loves a number of bands plus al the obvious pop artists...

I'm staggered by the cost of tickets now for theatre and concerts. DH wanted to get tickets for Cirque du Soleil next year and the cheapest seats were £75!

a friend from my dance class got me on to Today Tix and I managed to get tickets for Frozen for DH's Xmas present - yes he's such a big kid! - for £25 each in the balcony. Booked for March so was really pleased.

We were due to see Foo Fighters in Manchester in June this year and paid £75 each for unreserved seating which we thought was ok. DH was treating me for part of my birthday present. Sadly cancelled because of Taylor Hawkins death. We tried, unsuccessfully, to get tickets for the tribute concert in September but they were expensive and sold out in a nano second anyway

Indeed - Muse are absolutely amazing live. For me hands down the best stadium band around today (and I’m old and seen loads of live acts 😂). For my 22-year-old gig-mad DD this will be her 5th time seeing them - she saw them with 80,000 other people in Rome a couple of years back and said it was the best gig ever.

They are great I've seen them at Wembley when I was in my twenties a brilliant show. Must be 15 years+ ago now.

There's just a real lack of accessible pop kids bands out there really.

Going to look into a day festival and panto I think.

I’ve never paid £100 for theatre tickets. Not West End. Not even Broadway. Certainly not a tour. If you want to be at the front, you’ll pay. Cheaper tickets have a great view - often better for musicals as you can see the ‘patterns’ of the dancers on the stage. I had first month Hamilton West End tickets, front row of the upper circle, for under £50. Brilliant view.

I think fans should go on ticket strike and just not buy them. It's not about the music anymore, it's only about the money.

I'm in! 💪
