AIBU TO BE FLOORED BY CONCERT TICKET PRICES??

I'm looking for a concert to take my DD (6) and her cousin a similar age to.. something like Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift.. or anyone who has a large enough following for an arena show and age appropriate.

At this age a good show with high end production, lights etc will be so much fun for them.

We both love Billy Eilish - that was £400 a ticket last year. I took my DD to Little Mix last year at a reasonable £66 per ticket...

Beiber is £140 per ticket for the cheapest seats... how do people go to these concerts any more?

I thought £66 was a little steep for LM!

I'm really not paying £420 to go to Beiber with two under 7s!

Guess it's either a west end type (Lion King etc) production or Disney arena show? Any other ideas OPs?

Its not like theres money in selling music anymore they get like 8% of a penny for Spotify streams so they need to keep the tour prices high.

Live music is expensive now when compared to 15 or so years ago

its driven by the fundamental change in how the music industry works. It used to be that money was made from selling recorded music (records, cds) and the gigs were extras. An advert.

now, thanks to the tiny tiny amounts spotify etc pay artists, recorded music doesn’t make money. So it has to come from the live acts.

Also Ticketmaster/live Nation control the market. Their booking fees rise with ticket prices. Some of these acts tour and become millionaires every tour. Springsteen has one of the highest guarantees in the business. If no one turned up he still gets the fee. These are acts getting millions a night. If people are happy to go that's fine but seeing them when they are 70 for £100 plus is not like seeing them at the top of their game when they 32. I dont get where the money comes from or why people are happy to pay £20 per ticket booking fees. Imagine if Tesco charged you a shopping fee for using their car park and basket.

How about get some fucking taste. Yard act tickets £22.50, billynomates £17.50, the chats £20. All infinitely better than taylor fucking swift. Your children will thank you

I've Googled The Chats

I don't think any 6 yo would thank anyone for being forced to listen to generic punk, which in any event was done better in the 70s or 80s, no matter how cheap the tix are.

DarkDarkNight · 08/12/2022 22:12

Well Bumgh you sound like a right barrel of laughs. I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift (more recent stuff mostly) and Lana Del Rey too. I wouldn’t be so dismissive unless you’ve listened to the more recent work.

You remind me of me when I was a teenager, an insufferable indie snob obsessed with ‘keeping it real’.

My son loves George Ezra, not to my taste but it’s his choice. My dad tried to force Dylan and Cohen on me and it put me off for years. Let people develop their own taste in their own time.

Crikey. You seem a bit cross over something that has no impact on you.

pimlicoanna · 08/12/2022 22:17

I have 5 yr olds. I just booked frozen and Disney on ice. Disney on ice was about half the price of frozen and I'm sure they'll love it more than a concert.

MermaidMummy06 · 08/12/2022 22:19

It's simple business greed. They charge what people will pay.

We used to love the theater and occasional concert. We stick to local theatre production's now. It's sad because we hoped to raise our dc with a love of theatre, experiences, and travel. We can't afford any because demand has made it unaffordable.

I booked to take DD6 to frozen last year, before I realised the prices had gone up so much. It was flooded out (Brisbane) and I was relieved. It's was almost £300 for two tickets.

FettleOfKish · 08/12/2022 22:21

If it helps OP, I was 11 when I saw Take That I'm an arena and I only barely remember it, so consider whether it's worth it for something they'll likely forget.

PlanningTowns · 08/12/2022 22:23

Our 6 year old has been to various festivals, smaller acts, local bands and a huge Wembley concert this year. Find a really fab family friendly festival and maybe go for the day. Cheaper than an arena hig and you get so so much more!

I've not been to a concert for a long time. I went to Dido and I went to see Mabel three years ago but "post covid" it's just not something I have any interest in. I'd have hated a big concert at 6 - even the cinema made me feel extremely anxious and I wasn't an anxious child by any means. Just something about it was very overwhelming 😬

@Waxxy subjective isn't quite the word I was looking for 😂😂I'm with @SleepingStandingUp but also not keen on her DS's choice either 😂😂but I'm guessing you'd not be keen on mine either!!

I'd cope with Taylor Swift, I'd sell DS before I took him to see Bieber 😂😂. Really hoping Walk The Moon tour ENGLAND soon so I can take DS

ofmybloodyself · 08/12/2022 23:21

@Bumgh oohhhh, your first comment actually made me laugh and I thought 'fair play'. Second comment is just vile and mean. What a nasty little shit you are.

It's so hard to tell in advance, DS has always been easily overwhelmed but was desperate to see masked singer live (yes I know 🙄) and although it's not like being stood up at a concert etc, it was big and loud and busy and he loved it. He was jsut shy of 6. He's also been to the Hippodrome in Birmingham with me as well asp it local theatre for shows like We Will Rock You, aged 7, and other than a few moments of hands over ears, loves loves loves it.

Fairyliz · 08/12/2022 23:24

They are 6! Surely at that age the most you would be taking them to would be a pantomime by the local amateur dramatics society.

Tbf I'm not happy paying booking fees, but I accept its part of the cost nowadays so if my limit is £60 and its £59+ booking fee, I'm priced out. Unless its Pink then all sensible thoughts of a price cap went out the window 😳😳

QS90 · 08/12/2022 23:54

I heard gig tickets used to be cheap, as they were mainly for promoting albums. The money was then made by people buying said albums. Is a shame though, especially now tickets are SOOOO expensive.

My SIL went to a gig at a cinema for some K-Pop band, who were actually playing somewhere else in the world and being live streamed. She said it was really good, as all the fans being together in the one place made a gig-like atmosphere. Maybe try something like this?

Appalonia · 09/12/2022 00:09

In 82/83 I saw Culture Club at Leicester Polytechnic. The tickets were £1.75! 😂

This is a really good call actually. Not just music gigs but theatre, ballet, opera

EconomyClassRockstar · 09/12/2022 00:35

I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor opens up more dates at a more contained price. The backlash has been HUGE!

pompomdaisy · 09/12/2022 00:53

Just bought two tickets for Kasabian £55 each. I don't think I would spend that on a child so young. They will be bored in 5 mins. That's probably before the main act even arrives!

MadisonAvenue · 09/12/2022 00:59

Ticketmaster are huge touts.
I had two tickets for Hella Mega (Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Wheatus) back in the Summer and couldn’t go at the last minute so I sold them back to Ticketmaster.

I expected to make a loss but it said that if they sold I’d get back what I’d paid for them including fees, which came to around £83 per ticket.

I was sent a link when they went live on Ticketmaster’s page and they’d listed them at £145 each, and they sold less than an hour later.

ADifferentKindofChristmas · 09/12/2022 01:00

Don't waste your money on Lion King tickets OP.

Paid £££s for DH, DNephew and I thought it nothing better than a glorified panto.

So disappointed.Xmas Confused

Now the Masked Singer or Strictly are the only ones I could be tempted by these days 😂

Love The Chats 🤣🤣, can’t imagine they’re up a 6 year olds street though.

Dontsayyouloveme · 09/12/2022 08:31

Yes, tickets are getting more expensive, as is everything else… but if it’s something you enjoy and are happy to pay for… do it! Life’s too short…..
