ENERGY FRAUD … do I report ?

Hi. I’m really torn on this and not sure what to do if anything . Someone close to me has a business that uses a lot of gas and electricity of which with the rising costs are now thousands in debt .

They mentioned some time ago about knowing someone who could cap the gas meter for a fee . This would slow down the gas meter and produce a much lower bill but wouldn’t close it off completely.

the person close to me was previously paying about £550-600 a month in Gas and I’ve seen their last two direct debits have now dropped to under £100 a month for gas ( no way this is accurate ) they told me they didn’t get the gas capped because they couldn’t afford what they guy wanted paid to do it but it’s clear looking at the recent drop compared to the last 6 months that they have indeed done something to the gas .

Im annoyed because I too like all of us are paying a lot to even heat our homes and here is someone on purpose committing fraud and I believe it could be dangerous as this is a commercial business surrounded by flats above .

Do I report it or ignore it

Would they even take a report seriously ? Has anyone ever had to report for energy fraud ?

Don’t report it, and someone dies in an explosion. I’d report it

loislovesstewie · 10/12/2022 12:38

Is there any possibility that you might be able to smell an escape of gas? If you think you might that's your get out of jail for free card.

If your moral compass is so badly affected by what they are doing address it with THEM...I wouldnt even dream of reporting them.

Personally I think your distaste should be directed at the energy companies who financially rape us without a second thought. They are the reason you cant take baths anymore not your friend.

Good for your friend tbh

I don't think anyone who is happy for people to die to save themselves a few quid is in any position to talk about someone else's moral compass.

Sennelier1 · 10/12/2022 12:40

I understand you have high bills, I understand you're a bit jealous of the advantage your friend has. But a friend doesn't grass. Never ever.

Peachy2005 · 10/12/2022 12:41

If there was an explosion and someone died, you would probably regret not having reported it and people on here would criticise you for that, no doubt! If they haven’t done anything wrong/dangerous, they have nothing to worry about.

whynotwhatknot · 10/12/2022 12:41

the money side wouldnt bother me its the safety-you dont mess with gas

i know someon who isnt giving the correct figures that doesnt bother me as they already pay around 400 month but i woldnt let them mess with gas supply

Never ever. Pedophiles? Murders?

Nobody likes a grass

No one likes being blown up in a gas explosion because someone has fiddled about with the meter either.

I had a knock on the door once from an electricity safety officer, the tenants next door had bypassed their meter, the safety people needed to make sure they hadn’t compromised my supply by accessing it through the adjoining cellar ( they hadn’t) but apparently the bypassing they had done was both illegal ( obviously) and potentially dangerous.

Helsybub · 10/12/2022 12:46

The explosion that happened was nothing to do with meter tampering. The idiot bloke cut gas pipes to sell the pipes. 🙄

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2022 12:51

The likelihood is that the energy company will get suspicious at some point and send someone round to check the meters

With prices what they are the utility companies will be over the (already known) issue of theft like a rash, especially with business premises where the bills are obviously higher, so there's every chance of them being caught anyway

I know the mentality of "sticking it to the man" via theft is popular on here, but I'm another who'd report if only because of the safety angle

Maldedos · 10/12/2022 12:54

Anyone who won’t report someone tampering with a gas supply is an absolute idiot imo.
The pp’s saying grass need to grow up. There are potentially innocent people’s lives at risk because of illegal tampering.
If it was bypassing a water meter then I could perhaps understand some people not reporting it but this is dangerous.

oakleaffy · 10/12/2022 12:55

Gas meter tampering is really dangerous.

If it blows up, it can take the neighbour's houses with it.

On safety grounds, maybe report it.

If it kills innocent victims next door, or her own children, how would you feel?

Agree..It's the actual danger to innocent people that is so bad with gas.

roarfeckingroarr · 10/12/2022 12:57

Why on earth would you?

zingally · 10/12/2022 12:58

I'd keep out of it personally. These things have a way of coming back to bite the perpetrator in the arse.

caramac04 · 10/12/2022 12:59

WheelOfFish · 06/12/2022 23:55

It is possible they massively overpaid and now the next few months are much lower to compensate. I’d say if you knew for sure then yes, you should see if you can find a way to anonymously report but if there are any doubts then probably best to leave it.

My dd went up more than double but this month I’ve paid nothing and my dd has come right down. Down a bit too much I think so I’ve gone for the middle amount.
What I’m trying to say is that you’re right in thinking person may have overpaid. Even businesses are being more careful with fuel usage so may have cut back where possible

Mcmew · 10/12/2022 13:00

For the love of God, Leave the person alone. Energy suppliers are the biggest criminals on this planet. Honestly, wtf is this world coming to

bjjgirl · 10/12/2022 13:01

Theft is theft- report it 💯

Plus it is so dangerous and she risks blowing up the street

and How is that going to happen exactly ?

Madamecastafiore · 10/12/2022 13:02

Do it. They shouldn't be touching gas meters. Its extremely dangerous and could cause a blast where someone could lose their life.

Sennelier1 · 10/12/2022 13:02

Oh come on @Chimna , you know what I mean.

oakleaffy · 10/12/2022 13:03

Twiglets1 · 07/12/2022 06:59

I wouldn’t report a friend unless they were committing something like child abuse or cruelty to animals.

If there is an explosion. and it takes out kids in the flats above, and the animals, how would you feel?

I don't give a shit about the gas companies, it's the safety aspect with gas that's so dangerous.
I had the tiniest gas leak {From a control knob on cooker} and the gas man came out at midnight, and sealed off the pipe leading to the cooker as an explosion danger.
Had to buy a new cooker and pay for re- installation.

bjjgirl · 10/12/2022 13:03

Gas meters are really easy to bridge wrong- I have been to an explosion last week where the person had done this and the photographs were catastrophic

Mcmew · 10/12/2022 13:04

‘Theft is theft’ right… so in certain countries people have their limbs amputated for stealing to feed their starving families. It’s the fucking energy companies !!! They kill millions of people to through poverty and climate change . Fuuuuuccckkkkk 🤡
