ENERGY FRAUD … do I report ?

Hi. I’m really torn on this and not sure what to do if anything . Someone close to me has a business that uses a lot of gas and electricity of which with the rising costs are now thousands in debt .

They mentioned some time ago about knowing someone who could cap the gas meter for a fee . This would slow down the gas meter and produce a much lower bill but wouldn’t close it off completely.

the person close to me was previously paying about £550-600 a month in Gas and I’ve seen their last two direct debits have now dropped to under £100 a month for gas ( no way this is accurate ) they told me they didn’t get the gas capped because they couldn’t afford what they guy wanted paid to do it but it’s clear looking at the recent drop compared to the last 6 months that they have indeed done something to the gas .

Im annoyed because I too like all of us are paying a lot to even heat our homes and here is someone on purpose committing fraud and I believe it could be dangerous as this is a commercial business surrounded by flats above .

Do I report it or ignore it

Would they even take a report seriously ? Has anyone ever had to report for energy fraud ?

What makes me laugh is that if someone was asking about benefit fraud the whole thread would jump on saying repot them- this is theft and is so dangerous

Pavlova31 · 10/12/2022 13:14

Explosion in Jersey this morning . Similar set up of shops and flats . One dead. Twelve missing. Still thinking of not reporting, Op ?

www.stayenergysafe.co.uk/

There's a whole website dedicated to this

CheesenCrackersmm · 10/12/2022 13:19

Yes report it.

If everybody fiddled their gas supply we would end up with power cuts. Not to mention that the person doing the job might end up causing an explostion one day.

Cannot believe that people are suggesting that you ignore it!

Pterrydactyl · 10/12/2022 13:20

Tampering with a gas meter sounds really dangerous. I’d be inclined to report from a safety POV. I wouldn’t trust that someone illegally capping the meter was competent to do it safely.

Also, if their gas bills are now less than a fifth of what they were, surely that’s going to raise some red flags with the energy supplier? It wouldn’t surprise me if someone was sent out to check the meter even if you don’t report.

CheesenCrackersmm · 10/12/2022 13:21

Make sure you report the person you think is doing the capping too!

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 10/12/2022 13:24

I just think this might be the thread to finally make me leave this site. never read so much shite talked about friends dont grass. People could fucking die!!!! it's gotta be bot accounts, that many people couldn't be so fucking stupid????

Pavlova31 · 10/12/2022 13:25

Good point about reporting him too.

This.

The energy prices are insane and energy company profits need to be addressed, but tampering with gas supplies and endangering innocent residents is just appalling.

I really hope you have reported by now OP.

Apparently mumsnet disagrees with you 🤷‍♀️, shameful

GalwayShawl · 10/12/2022 13:30

Lets hope none of you lose your homes or a loved one through people dicking about with the gas supply.

If there is an explosion. and it takes out kids in the flats above, and the animals, how would you feel?

I don't give a shit about the gas companies, it's the safety aspect with gas that's so dangerous.
I had the tiniest gas leak {From a control knob on cooker} and the gas man came out at midnight, and sealed off the pipe leading to the cooker as an explosion danger.
Had to buy a new cooker and pay for re- installation.

If, If, If... I don’t live my life considering all the worst case scenarios that could occur after every decision I make in life. I wouldn’t report a friend for energy fraud, and I wouldn’t be expecting that to result in a huge gas explosion either.
Anything’s possible but like I say, I tend to be more rational about more likely scenarios which is just the energy company losing a few quid which wouldn’t bother me.

olderlady · 10/12/2022 13:40

I'd say mind your own business

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2022 13:42

‘Theft is theft’ right… so in certain countries people have their limbs amputated for stealing to feed their starving families

What on earth's that got to do with gas tampering in the UK?
If someone suggested amputating limbs for doing this I must have missed it ...

sjxoxo · 10/12/2022 13:46

Doesn’t sound like you I’ve any proof of fraud imo. All you’ve seen is something you’ve not expected! I’m not sure what you would report when you have no actual proof… I don’t think you should really do anything. Unless you have any proof. X

Unicorn1919 · 10/12/2022 13:47

Please report it. Another gas explosion killing people today. Tampering with a gas supply is very dangerous.

Cakecakecheese · 10/12/2022 13:55

The guy doing the capping needs reporting.

So I assume you also wouldn't report someone for drink driving then? Because probably they won't have an accident, if they do have an accident probably they won't kill someone, if you report them might lose their licence and perhaps their job.

VladmirsPoutine · 10/12/2022 13:56

The most unreasonable thing was the person tell you. Thing is your enemies aren't 'distant' non-existent people. They're your friends, family, people you think you can talk to. Someone like the OP is a prime example of that. I can count on one finger how many close friends I have because I know the world is full of people like the OP. These sort of people are so full of bitterness and hate. They get life through causing distress to others and watching others they consider themselves close to fail. I warn people to be extremely careful because the OP is probably the type of offer a listening ear, a cup of hot tea then get straight on to whatever authority then bring a chair to their curtain in anticipation. It's sad but that's what it is.

Itsabitnotcold · 10/12/2022 13:57

YABU energy companies bought into a depleting resource. Have actively prevented the development of alternative, more environmentally friendly energy sources. Are now trying to wreck our planet even more to get at the last bits. And have hiked energy prices extortionately when people are struggling to keep roofs over their heads while making BILLIONS in profits.

No I would not ruin somebodies life to protect their enormous profit margin.

Although I admit I didn't consider they'd done a dangerous job of it tbh.

Jaxhog · 10/12/2022 14:16

Don't kid yourselves, if other people steal energy, then WE pay for it. Maybe not immediately, but eventually.

You’re right, I wouldn’t report a friend to the police for drink driving. I would express my disapproval to them but I wouldn’t report them.

Beckknowsbest · 10/12/2022 16:31

I would report it personally. This is beyond dangerous.

And if you found out they had been involved in a hot and run whilst drunk and driving?
