Writing about her idyllic Christmas..I had no idea about her husband, is she still with him?

And yes. Horrified that IK is still at the times. The nepotism protecting her is 🤯

DistrictCommissioner · 14/02/2023 21:05

Weren’t there emails from Emma Barnett referring to her dad’s whores?

Lawandsawdus · 14/02/2023 21:10

It is horrendous she stays. What would be the employment law basis to dismiss her (if an employee rather than freelance)?

JuvenileEmu · 14/02/2023 21:31

Sometimes Julie Birchill is just fantastic:

"she just can’t stop judging others – last month it was ‘the people you always see in airports having pints for breakfast’ – those déclassé degenerates, as opposed to people like her partner who drink whiskey and watch babies being penetrated. "

VestaTilley · 14/02/2023 21:51

Still with the vile paedophile. She’s awful, as is he.

Really? I read up on that as well. Of course her case is very different but was struck by how she explained it (only in the little pieces I could find where she discusses it) as how her father unfortunately went through some bad business & financial difficulties that led him to make some questionable decisions - or words to that effect.
Kind of felt like again the responsibility was attributed externally & not to the person. I just think as the voice of Woman’s Hour & her platform maybe she could have acknowledged his crimes & maybe even apologised for his exploitation, sex & human trafficking & prostituting of vulnerable & desperate women. And publicly made a stand that in no way does she support her father & is positively abhorred by his crimes & treatment of women.
Maybe she did. I know she shouldn’t be tainted by association & nor should her career suffer because of it but it’s a very uncomfortable reality & one that maybe should have been acknowledged? if it wasn’t already. I’m sure others will disagree & I’m only writing & typing as I think so could be wrong. Just seems more evidence of the closing of ranks in establishments when others would be hounded & shamed for it? The double standards…

Just looked at Andrew O’Hagan’s insta. I think their daughter now identifies as a boy called Finn

Bloody hell.

1ittlegreen · 14/02/2023 22:07

It's the smug 'just posing with a cup of tea' picture which makes me sick. I find her utterly offensive from her big, shiny forehead to her absolute arsewipe writing to her shameful stance in solidarity with EJ.

What can be done? Nothing apparently.

Blossomtoes · 14/02/2023 22:25

She’s a very nasty piece of work. And Emma Barnett does my head in too. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping she doesn’t return to Woman’s Hour from mat leave.

Yes this is why i brought it up as another example of media silence when it's one of their own. It is very grating that she is held up as a voice for feminism when her own expensive education was paid for by the exploitation of vulnerable women.

Companyofwolves · 14/02/2023 22:36

@niandraladesand so true. Until this thread I knew about neither.

I’ve never enjoyed her writing and think she’s vile, I am a Times subscriber but never click on her columns. I will continue to subscribe while they have Janice Turner, Carol M and a few others I like.

Lostthetastefordahlias · 14/02/2023 23:25

I thought she may do some interviews to give her side of the story to coincide with her book launch of the Mitford re write that was endlessly delayed then released to
practically no fanfare last year. Just do not understand how she can be so judgemental of absolutely everyone except Eric.

BlippiIsAnnoying · 14/02/2023 23:31

I can't believe she's still there after standing by that disgusting paedophile.

There's never any accountability in journalism. Even the sainted Observer covered up accusations of Nick Cohen sexually harrasing young women in the workplace.

God, her poor daughter, no wonder she's confused. All those fawning comments under Andrew O'Hagan's post about "father and son time", just fucking deluded and ridiculous.

ClareBlue · 15/02/2023 03:58

As Sunday Times buyers every Sunday for 30 years we stopped and switched and emailed the editor and said why. Obviously on it's own means nothing to them, but if everyone who has unsubscribed as least lets them know why. Eventually there might be impact. And let all your friends know.

Surely it's impossible to spend an idyllic Christmas with A CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE?

potniatheron · 15/02/2023 14:51

She has the typical face of a female alcoholic in middle agea (I feel comfortable saying this because I am myself an alkie, albeit sober and in AA for over a decade).

She used to write chick lit and I read one of her books, many years ago - very mediocre.

Her columns are mediocre, unimaginative, complacant and smug.

Media nepotism at its worst.

However I do think Eric must have some kind of terrible hold over her and I would not be surprised if it was a DV situation. No one deserves that. Not even smug crap nepo writers.

One of the interesting facts to come out of the Tavistock investigation is that children seeking help for gender dysphoria were 10 times more likely than average to have a parent who is on the sex offender register.

While this is a bit mean (and a bit off-point- you don't have to be beautiful to be a good beauty writer) it does highlight the weirdness of IK's career. Most beauty writers actually know about beauty- they have expertise in the subject that allows them to inform their readers. IK's columns OTOH all boiled down to "this week I got sent a lovely face cream, isn't that jolly?"

And the cookery column is the same- "why not put some lovely things on a plate? Aren't we all marvellous?" May as well hire me to do the motoring column- "this week I drove a lovely blue one- wheeee!"

Jugglingitallmum · 22/02/2023 20:36

I've just had a sponsored ad on Instagram for beauty pie using a quote from her to sell some face serum.
Do you think they know her story? If so, it's pretty appalling.

catandcoffee · 22/02/2023 20:49

As the saying goes
' it's not what you know but who you know '

Its sickening her and him.
