To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 04:16

Posters say incredibly offensive, often outright racist things and MN lets them stand as it’s a ‘difference of opinion’ and that’s fine. Other posters complain about this and MN deletes said complaints as they are ‘personal attacks’ and that isn’t fine.

Then we have mods wandering in and going ‘let’s have peace and love’, as though ‘both sides’ need to calm down. No, we need to stop placating racists.

I’m not going to give examples as this will get taken down as a TAAT, but I cannot be the only person to be fed up with all this. MN needs to do something about the racism, race baiting and general cultural ignorance. Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people and, even then, I firmly believe that most posters of any race don’t want to see all that ugliness.

It’s getting to the stage where, as a Black person, I’m steeling myself before I log on. And knowing that half the time I report a comment, I won’t even get a token acknowledgement. This isn’t right. It wasn’t always like this.

I consider “British” culture not to actually be one specific thing. It is an amalgamation of everyone that calls the UK their home, including their customs, beliefs, practices.

A child in the UK has as much right to celebrate Ramadan, Eid, Diwali or Hanukkah as they do Christmas, and to see that reflected in their entertainment and education.

If I go to an Arab country can I attempt to 'amalgamate' my Christian values to theirs so that it's all indistinct? I bet not, This amalgamation doesn't exist. Anyone can celebrate whatever they want, but it's at best disingenuous to claim that it's all part of British culture. It isn't

Cultures can and do change for various reasons.

What is it you don't like about British (or English) culture that has changed ?

Igotjelly · 03/12/2022 08:38

Squeezita · 03/12/2022 08:35

But how have Hindu, Islamic, Jewish values been amalgamated into Britain’s Christian culture?

Britain is still a Christian country. National holidays are reserved for Christmas and Easter, not for Diwali, Eid or Hanukkah.

And THATS part of the problem. We are a minority Christian country, no reason why Christian religious festivals take precedent.

I’m so sorry that happened to you mrschocolatte. I hope that boy is in the gutter where he belongs.

Thank you @Squeezita. I think I may have read you experienced similar abuse? It’s crap innit. I often think of that boy, who is now a 50 something man possibly with daughters and granddaughters himself, probably the pillar of his local community and well loved by all. And he won’t remember me at all. But I will always remember him and that pisses me off no end.

Theluggage15 · 03/12/2022 08:41

Chatting to various white friends the other day, we all agreed we never get into any discussions about race because it’s just not worth it. As far as I’m concerned the issue is dominated by extreme points of view because the large majority of people just don’t want to get involved. Not sure that’s healthy.

Sausagenbacon · 03/12/2022 08:42

If MN isn't ideologically pure enough for you, get off your backside and start your own site. Just like mn did.
Or do you prefer to hang around, policing us?

Calphurnia88 · 03/12/2022 08:42

Totally agree, and Mumsnet (the company) needs to get a much tighter grip on it. It's one of the reasons my usage of the site has dropped massively of late.

See also; homophobia and transphobia.

Indeed.

I appreciate your posts @rumship just wanted to let you know Smile

KarmaStar · 03/12/2022 08:44

I disagree.perhaps I view different posts to you op but I have not seen any racism towards a black or ethnic person at all.I do see it the other way though all the time.
it seems there cannot be an even keel where people can be seen as people rather than identified by colour.it's sad.

Nah, my backside is here to stay, why don’t you go to Reddit sub forum and takes your mates with you.

Trans ideology is homophobic though

Transphobia is dealt with robustly.

Who are you then rum? Why so coy?

Sorry what are you asking, your being a bit evasive, do you want to know where I come from?

dieselKiller · 03/12/2022 08:47

WondrousWinger · 03/12/2022 08:06

I don't understand this part. Why would you expect mostly white teachers? Are you saying BME people don't train as teachers? Or just that schools don't hire them?

Because there are vastly more white people in the UK than any other race.

Even if all races were proportionally represented in teaching, the chance of a black child having a black teacher or an Asian child having an Asian teacher is always going to be low and 'not the norm'.

WondrousWinger, here’s an opportunity to double check your assumptions or your maths.

Suppose the Black population of the UK is about 4%, that the proportion of Black teachers matches the proportion of the general population and that both teachers and pupils are evenly distributed, that there are 250,000 teachers in secondary education, that there are 4,200 secondary schools in the UK, that pupils are taught by 30 teachers during secondary education.

How many Black teachers would you expect to see at each school?

How many Black teachers would you expect a white pupil to be taught by?

Does this line up with your feelings about what the norm would be in your “even if” world?

Yes, I have, as have my family. But as you can see, there is tumbleweed from white posters about our experiences.

Even if he is a pillar of his community, all you need to remember is that he will always be scum and you are good. Let’s hope he was found out and is living in a grotty bedsit with no friends.

LikeTearsInRain · 03/12/2022 08:49

As previous posters have said the blatant transphobia has been allowed for some time and this continues to seep into a softening on other areas such as race.

MN is vile and I hope everyday it is not a reasonable reflection of this country more wildly. Somehow I know it is though.

I don’t particularly care where you’re from but what’s with all the vague references with who you are? Are you famous?

Any examples? You won’t post any because you have none.

Do you have any examples of "the other way"?

Pondere · 03/12/2022 08:53

I agree completely. I often have to take a break from this site because the racism that is allowed and shown by numerous posters is really depressing.

And as is evident by this thread, MNers are either proud of their racist thoughts, or deny it’s an issue.

Oh the ignorant bliss that accompanies life as a white person.

maddy68 · 03/12/2022 08:54

I agree it's getting increasingly toxic both for racial issues and also trans etc. I head you not to step food in the feminism chat ...

Yes, do link to these threads where black or ethnic people are racist to white people.

I think it probably is a reflection of wider society, sadly. It is just that in real life people don't let the mask slip quite so much.
