To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse

1000 replies

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 04:16

Posters say incredibly offensive, often outright racist things and MN lets them stand as it’s a ‘difference of opinion’ and that’s fine. Other posters complain about this and MN deletes said complaints as they are ‘personal attacks’ and that isn’t fine.

Then we have mods wandering in and going ‘let’s have peace and love’, as though ‘both sides’ need to calm down. No, we need to stop placating racists.

I’m not going to give examples as this will get taken down as a TAAT, but I cannot be the only person to be fed up with all this. MN needs to do something about the racism, race baiting and general cultural ignorance. Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people and, even then, I firmly believe that most posters of any race don’t want to see all that ugliness.

It’s getting to the stage where, as a Black person, I’m steeling myself before I log on. And knowing that half the time I report a comment, I won’t even get a token acknowledgement. This isn’t right. It wasn’t always like this.

This is very cryptic and I have no idea what you’re talking about. Please could you spell it out?

If anyone reading this thread is white, thinking that they don't see much racism and doesn't really understand what a lot of these posters mean, could I recommend reading Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race. It'll take you by the hand and lead you through British Society as you've never seen it before.

Fantastic book.

Meghan is a bully and a red herring in this argument, as no one can say anything bad about her, as it’s racist.
She treated people at the palace appallingly, is very self centred and to be honest not in touch with the real world anymore (have you listened to her podcast?).
I think if we want to have a genuine discussion about race, we remove her, as people have such polarising views on her personality.

I also think we often forget Asian people in all this, I hear so much of sticking up for black people, but the worst racism I’ve seen in real life was to a chap of south East Asian heritage.
It feels like the BBC especially is bending over backwards to include black people, rightly so, but what about British Asian people? Who make up 7% of the population?

People have had their opinions though. There's no need to beitriate the woman. That too is bullying.

You don't like her granted. Move on. MM is making money from this some of you need to realise there's reasons why she IS current.

As a white English woman I am sick to the back teeth of the constant divide between black and white individuals. There is nothing, NOTHING in the world that comes close to the deep rifts between those two races. We don't hear much of Polish v white, Asian v white, Danish or Austrian v white or even Mexican or Brazilian v white.
If we want equality, we must see the person not the colour, however, it's like a disease with no cure. There appears to be no answer and it's been a tit for tat war. We have a right to expect people living in Britain to keep to our rules and laws but able to keep their own customs within certain boundaries as we expect to comply with the laws of any country we Brits visit.
Either we try harder to get along, there are good and bad in all communities, or this race hate will taint many more generations to come, probably for as long as the planet exists. 🕊️

You’ve been given two examples of white people being racist to elderly Asian women.

And yet you, and other people on this thread, are deafeningly silent. No sympathy, no fucks given. No one is obliged to sympathise but why ask for examples and then be silent when given examples.

unsureatthispoint · 03/12/2022 07:44

I want my BME child to be able to go to school and see a teacher who looks like them, read a book written by someone like them, learn about scientists/scholars/historical figures that look like them.

Isn't this racist? What would be the problem if they didn't look like them?

Britain is an increasingly diverse place with an array of wonderful cultures in it.

So you yourself are making a distinction between the 'array of wonderful cultures' and British culture then? How does it work?

Squeezita · 03/12/2022 07:45

Pleasecreateausername13 · 03/12/2022 07:22

Why would I do my own research?

The OP has made quite the statement that MN is littered with racists, I’m not being unreasonable to ask for some examples of what they class as racist comments.

Then go look through MN and come back with a report on how it’s not racist.

No ones owes you research.

Spoken like a true, dyed in the wool white person 🙄.

Do you realise that the rift between races is due to a long, very long history of oppression and subsequent mistreatment of black people? I'm not even black but see it a mile off. Windrush, endemic racism in football, countless traffic issues, police brutality. The list goes on. This 'tit for tat' you're talking about is a joke and sadly you're everything that's wrong with a section of MN.

You're talking about foreigners coming here and living by our rules and laws but conveniently forget that the English don't exactly have a track record of visiting other countries and just 'getting along'. The English have never gone anywhere and just integrated but bulldozed themselves over everything.

It wasn't long ago that white people (under the queen's rule by the way) went to Kenya, made their lives a complete and utter misery and then covered it up. Those that decided not to bend over and take it were branded terrorists in the media, tortured and beaten (to death mostly). Then after years of oppressive behaviour, "oh you can have your country back now, aren't we generous".

My MIL is from that era and I'd go as far as to say she hates black people. If we weren't more discerning my OH would've grown up with an attitude like yours but thankfully not.

There are literally millions of people like my MIL, who held reasonable jobs and been in charge of employing or dealing with people on a daily basis. The 'tit for tat' as you call it stems from people like her discriminating in recruitment or out and about.

Many of them spawned little racists who are not quite as bad but then come on to threads like these to post their vapid nonsense under the guise of reasonable debate. Give me strength.

BadNomad · 03/12/2022 07:47

There's a total bollocks thread ongoing right now with sneaky racism in it. I don't know how people don't see it.

She didn’t say she wants ALL teachers to look like her child, just a teacher.

But you knew that.

Oh look another shut down open debate if people disagree with you. That's why people don't care any more, over used and over abused!

For examples you can just scroll through this thread to be honest. I think the OP knew this thread would prove her point for her.

Why don't you probe the poster who made the distinction between all the 'wonderful cultures' coexisting in Britain and British culture?

Now you’re just being obtuse for the sake of it.

No it isn’t racist. The teaching workforce in Scotland (where we are) is only 1.4% BME. There are plenty of white dole models, which is of course important, but BME children should also be able to see themselves reflected. The curriculum is white centric, I’m not saying to stop teaching white history just that other perspectives also exist. Looking at our curriculum you wouldn’t think a BME person had ever achieved anything and that simply isn’t true.

And on British culture I was saying there is no “British” culture, we are a mixed society. I can only assume you equate British with white.

I cant believe youre so naive as to think that. It looks a bit like you're saying only white people are racist, or at least the most racist.

Also, I dont get your point re Polish, Danish and Austrian v white.

Have you ever been to Madrid where there's a massive South America/continental Spanish racist issue due to the number of migrants, or been warned by a Cypriot restaurant owner in the UK to watch out for Albanians as they're dangerous and cause more trouble than anyone else?

Go to any non-white country on the planet and you'll see just as much racism. So pack it in with your nonsense about it being white v black.

GyozaGuiting · 03/12/2022 07:51

@Ivyblu you like her, I don’t- it doesn’t matter. It details the whole race debate.
@Salacia I worked in the army with a guy who worked with her, I trust his judgement.

@Pleasecreateausername13 if you want evidence just go and read some of the recent threads about Ngozi Fulani.

What constitutes racism is open to debate though

debbrianna · 03/12/2022 07:52

GrinAndVomit · 03/12/2022 06:32

I thought that was so black women would have a space to discuss issues that affect them in a specific way because of their race. A place where they don’t have to accept a white person’s view point on something that will never affect them in the same way.
Similar to mumsnet really. It’s a space for women to discuss issues that affect them in a specific way because of their sex without having to accept a male perspective on that issue.

If you haven't described racism, I don't know what it is. When you can't have a conversation because of some people, you think that their opinion is more important.

ILoveeCakes · 03/12/2022 07:52

stuntbubbles · 03/12/2022 07:50

That's why I asked.

I'm not sure I can define what British culture is either, which is why I asked you.
