To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 04:16

Posters say incredibly offensive, often outright racist things and MN lets them stand as it’s a ‘difference of opinion’ and that’s fine. Other posters complain about this and MN deletes said complaints as they are ‘personal attacks’ and that isn’t fine.

Then we have mods wandering in and going ‘let’s have peace and love’, as though ‘both sides’ need to calm down. No, we need to stop placating racists.

I’m not going to give examples as this will get taken down as a TAAT, but I cannot be the only person to be fed up with all this. MN needs to do something about the racism, race baiting and general cultural ignorance. Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people and, even then, I firmly believe that most posters of any race don’t want to see all that ugliness.

It’s getting to the stage where, as a Black person, I’m steeling myself before I log on. And knowing that half the time I report a comment, I won’t even get a token acknowledgement. This isn’t right. It wasn’t always like this.

you have stated. 'Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people?? ' This appears to be insinuating that the racism is coming from people of a white colour which may not be the case at all!! Are you also trying to instigate racism?

Safeguarding is not a strawman argument.

It is in this context.

Mirabai · 04/12/2022 20:56

It is in this context.

This is the exact issue we discussed further back in the thread.

If there is a safeguarding concern, in any context, we must be able to discuss it.

Just a heads up @ Clavinova used to post on the Brexit forum I was a lurker on and she’s a hardcore Tory/Brexit wind up merchant

Do you want Mumsnet to be an echo chamber? Anyone would think we didn't actually vote to leave the EU and the Conservatives didn't win the last general election.

I want to avoid WUM.

Yet weirdly enough, no one in real life has ever called me a racist. I’m talking about on this site, people (not just me) get called racist for saying they don’t like MM. Only on this site, and for this ridiculous reason, like people can’t understand that there are other reasons for disliking someone other than their race. She’s an annoying prat who takes herself far too seriously, in my opinion. Not for whatever reason anyone else wants to invent. Not everything has to do with race and not everyone who disagrees with you is racist and just because you say or think someone is racist doesn’t mean they are. What’s the point of starting these threads if anyone who disagrees with you gets called a racist and dismissed.
You should think about that.

I’ll repeat myself. And even on this very site, most people never get called racist. As in, never ever. Old people, young people, people of all races. Just going about their business, not being called racist ever in their lives.

If people keep shouting ‘racist’ at you, then there’s probably a reason. You should think about that.

What's the point of coming on these threads if you’re completely unwilling to listen to what’s being said to you?

The obsession with Megan Markle is particularly entertaining. I haven’t mentioned her once, she’s not in my OP, yet loads of you cannot help yourselves. Funny that.

Of course they would use “Can I help you?” to anyone they didn’t recognised trying to access the school.

It’s an incredibly common and polite way to stop people and check their identity.

If it kept happening to her a lot in that period, then there is a problem.

A problem with the school

To be asked once is ok. To be asked a lot is a problem.

I hope she would have brought it up with the school. "Listen, when I come to the school ,the admin staff ask me if they can help me"

TBF - it's unusual to see @Clavinova on these kind of threads. It makes a nice change. Might see you on a film thread soon Grin

No. It needs to happen every single time she is met with a member of staff who she hasn’t met before. That is safeguarding.

A specific example that has nothing to do with the incident at Buckingham Palace, nothing to do with MN being rife with racism, everything to do with dissecting every tiny piece of Ngozi Fulani’s past to discredit her account, and is derailing the thread completely.

How many times is it acceptable to be challenged by admin staff when you work at a school?

I hope that she was able to sort it out.

It’s acceptable to be challenged every time you meet a member of staff you haven’t come into contact with before.

You are trying to imply she shouldn’t have been asked to identify herself to school staff. I am making it clear that this is incorrect.

Actually - it's a good example.

@Clavinova has gone to the trouble of digging up an article and posting a specific piece from it.

For some reason.

I’m not implying anything, I’m saying quite clearly that the thread title is “[AIBU] To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse” and your little side debate has eff all to do with that. Though the dead horse flogging does beautifully demonstrate the title, so perhaps it’s performance art.

I’ve been pretty consistent throughout this thread. I’ve not stated much other than when safeguarding practises have been questioned.
I’m not going to disagree with things I don’t know anything about, such as what happened at the palace or what constitutes as racism (I’ll happily defer to people who have more knowledge and experience) but I will disagree with people muddying the waters of what is considered to be more important than following safeguarding policies.
