Bad parent award goes to me tonight

I forgot to attend my DC’s parents evening.

Here’s my list of excuses:
I have a very demanding job
I worked late
I have had a headache all day
DC isn’t with me this evening to remind me with their presence
Parents evening was online, not at school, which makes it seem less of an ‘event’ in my internal calendar
DC is doing fine by all available evidence so I have no concerns on my mind

But you know what, these are terrible excuses and I am struggling to forgive myself.

Feel like a truly shitty parent tonight.

I forgot about one maybe 20 years ago, went to a bbq got very tipsy, remembered the parents evening, turned up tipsy while being sure I was presenting as completely sober, I was not sober, I had clearly been drinking.

My mum was never able to attend parents evenings because she was a single mum who worked all hours........same for most school events. It was just one of those things. If this is the first one you've missed in all his school years you're doing pretty well in my opinion.

I once forgot to collect my dd from school, and only realised when I was getting into my car at the shops, 15 minutes away. It was a hideous experience and I only ever did it once, a couple of weeks after I'd had a new baby. These things happen, and the school was understanding, as I'm sure yours will be!

Well, you could have done what I did and turn up to speak to your child's secondary school science teacher for them to say I don't know who you are talking about! Sadly I didn't have my child with me due to health reasons, but in a dining room full of people I just went beetroot. I did ask if they were sure, and they assured me they didn't teach my child.
Reader, they did! I got an apology from the school but it will forever stick in my mind.
From experience, parents evenings run over so you not being available to talk probably helped them keep close to in time as possible. I'm sure if they have any concerns they will let you know

Please be kinder to yourself🤗

Mulhollandmagoo · 02/12/2022 00:19

Ahhh, please don't beat yourself up! The fact that you're upset about it and worried your DC will be upset, straight away shows you're not even a little bit a bad mum, a bad mum wouldn't go and wouldn't care!

We've all forgot things, it happens! I've forgot the same dentist appointment twice 🤦‍♀️ the receptionists clapped and cheered when we actually remembered and got there!!! I don't think I've ever grovelled as much, but I felt absolutely awful, but I had so much going on and it completely slipped my mind (I also had it in my calendar and a reminder text)

Also, some of the replies on here are cracking 🤣 particularly the poster who forgot she had two kids so crossed the second parents evening out of her diary....really tickled me that one 🤣

HoppingPavlova · 02/12/2022 04:09

Meh, after my second, I figured they really added nothing. So first went to them all, second until Yr7ish then I didn’t bother at all for the rest of theirs, or any of the others going through. Didn’t change anyone’s life.

Waiteflower · 02/12/2022 04:14

My parents never went to my parents evenings so forgetting one isn't all that bad

Pinot4me · 02/12/2022 10:32

These things happen. You’re busy and you forgot. Human error. Don’t beat yourself up!

Stompythedinosaur · 02/12/2022 10:42

I've done this before. Luckily dp attended though! I was super busy at work and just didn't think. It happens!
