The Lady Hussey racism thing

Tiiiiiiiiiiired · 01/12/2022 10:58

I am really conflicted about this.

If went to live in Japan (I did live there for 3 years several years ago) I would be expected to be asked about where I'm from because I don't look Japanese (and in fact I was asked many times! I didn't mind at all, it was my choice to be in Japan and I knew I didn't look japanese). If I chose to stay in that country and have children, I'd expect my children would be asked the same, and their children and that although they would be Japanese by birth, I would hope they would be happy to talk about their heritage and where they are from and not mind being asked why they don't look Japanese and what the history is. I wouldnt think it racist and wouldn't want such questions to be stopped because we only learn from others, and about others, by talking and feeling safe to ask questions.

So why in the UK does everyone have to be sooo careful with what they say? This woman has a non English name, was wearing some non western clothing, as was asked about her heritage. Why is this abuse?

We need to stop being so sensitive and allow dialogue.

Of course it’s not cultural appropriation for someone to wear a hairstyle inspired by their own heritage. It would be cultural appropriation for me as a white woman to wear a feather headdress or locs

if you wear a hairstyle and clothes inspired by your own heritage, don’t be surprised when someone asks you about that heritage.

If you wear a short dress don't be suprised if someone assumes you are looking for sex

I am shocked that Mn is letting this thread stand. So many racist posts 😬Awful.

It’s because the racists are getting trounced. Better to let it stay up and show what minorities deal with.

And what clothes and hairstyle will you as a white person wear so we can assume your heritage?

@TooBigForMyBoots My question is would be acceptable to ask about heritage given the group that she represented focuses solely upon African and Caribbean women?

There's quite a difference between asking about someone's heritage and denying their nationality though isn't there

I mean if LH had asked if she had a connection to the community she was helping, or what had drawn her to the work she did, or why she founded the charity I'm sure she would have got far more positive interesting answers than telling someone they were Caribean not British

Squeezita · 01/12/2022 17:18

They're not my words. They are the words of the people present and the Royal Household. Do you think they're all lying @thehorsehasnowbolted?

Best ignored as they have form for posting utter garbage.

Likewise denying it 100 times won't get SH reinstated, simply because she was way out of line.

niceduvet · 01/12/2022 17:20

Lady SH was certainly insensitive, but the other woman was also being deliberately obtuse and evasive. Personally I would hope she would make some allowances and have some grace based on Lady SH's age/generation and the fact that she had an exemplary record of service up until that point.

Why didn't the woman complain directly and privately to the Palace in writing rather than causing a public s**t storm? Bad form on the woman's part.

BlueThursday · 01/12/2022 17:20

”Victims of racism should be graceful about it.”

LadyWithLapdog · 01/12/2022 17:26

@niceduvet what do you mean by exemplary record of service? Is there somewhere we can look up these things or are you giving the benefit of the doubt because of age, colour, class, connections?

Lunar270 · 01/12/2022 17:28

sheepdogdelight · 01/12/2022 16:27

*or has the definition of racism now widened to include speaking clumsily or using recently outmoded conversation gambits, without the intent to be racist?

Intent is very hard to prove. Overt racism is in the decline in the UK. A lot f racism is now microaggressions. only of course it isn't racism because the aggressor "never meant to offend" and the upset party is "too sensitive".

Racist behaviour is racist behaviour. This wasn't a situation of a person talking clumsily or not using the latest politically correct phrase.

You're spot on about overt racism. As laws tighten and it becomes socially unacceptable, racists are doing their utmost to fly under the radar. They still want to get their kicks and to stick the knife in but in ways that won't get them sacked as easily or castigated by society.

Like here. You can easily upset people with faux naivety and goading but not get banned. Very clever really.

This is just so ridiculous, I can hardly believe someone has the energy to write it down. The “bad form” is entirely that of Lady Hussey.

Not the way she did it. No. Her behaviour was racist and unacceptable. Do you think the people who were there and BP are lying @twelly ?

Why didn't the victim react in the right way, it's clearly their fault?

LH has 60 years experience in the role she was in.

How come LH is allowed allowances and grace, but the victim is 'deliberately obtuse and evasive.' and 'Bad form on the woman's part.'

I mean Ngozi is 61, why isn't she getting the allowances and grace based on her age?

iklboo · 01/12/2022 17:32

Because racism needs to be called out in public.

More coming out, online support does seem to have turned somewhat. 'Sistah space' not directly invited but included with 'Safe Space uk' so clearly the staff wouldn't have known who she was. NF seems to have an anti rf agenda as evidenced by her tweets. I really hope she hasn't caused any distress to the victims her charity supports.

Poor Camilla, the cause the function was highlighting has been lost. Yes her staff should of course not allegedly harass guests. All we've seen so far is NF chatting to Camilla, I wonder if this was before or after the interaction with Hussey.

Clavinova · 01/12/2022 17:36

Squeezita
The headband is barely visibly, I doubt that was why Hussey questioned her.

I barely noticed the headband in the Palace photos at first - which is why I quoted Ngozi Fulani from the Independent article. You didn't spot the title of the article (which I didn't quote at the time admittedly)?

Charity boss says her authentic African attire led to ‘attack’ from palace aide

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/royal-race-row-ngozi-fulani-b2236890.html

And I’ve read and watched the interview linked above and I can’t see any references to Ngozi’s dress.

Ngozi is quite clearly wearing the same colours (I had on a red, gold and green headband) in the subsequent interview links:

niceduvet · 01/12/2022 17:37

Iklboo - Why does everything need to be called out in public? Can't anyone approach anyone personally/directly anymore like an adult?

It doesn't matter if she had an anti royal family agenda.

If I have an anti man agenda because of male violence, it doesn't make it okay for a man to attack me.

Someone not liking the royal family does not make it okay for a representative of theirs to be racist to that person.

I don't get why people are using this as an excuse

If the goal was to find out what Sistah Space was, that’s easily done:

Where are you from?
Sistah Space.
Oh, and what’s your role there?
I’m the founder.
What kind of work does Sistah Space do?
Like everyone here we work with victims of DV – we’re tied quite closely with Safe Space UK.
Etc.

dollymixtured · 01/12/2022 17:39

Given that she is now characterising it as abuse and saying she can’t believe it happened in a space supposed to be protecting women from violence thereby implying that the interaction was an act of violence or abuse, I think it can safely be said that Ms Fulani has a very specific understanding of those words that may not be shared by all. It seems to me that using words such as violence and abuse to refer to such a conversation is something of a disservice to those women suffering from violent domestic abuse.
