Racism in the Royal Family

Susan Hussey has resigned. Philip was coming out with similar comments in public all his life, yet there was no move to get rid of him. AIBU to think this is more royal hypocrisy?

Okay, I think this was a horrible exchange that made Fulani feel uncomfortable and excluded. I totally get that. BUT, sadly, that lady in waiting's line of questioning is also what passes as 'polite chit chat' in this country.

Seriously? Apparently the reason the Queen used to ask 'Have you come far?' is because 'Where are you from?' might be problematic. So, no, it hasn't passed for 'polite chitchat' for a very long time.

Nolosomi · 30/11/2022 20:37

All the private education and money can’t buy you decency. However old this stupid woman is she deserves everything she’s getting. Rude, obnoxious, entitled idiot.

LonginesPrime · 30/11/2022 20:37

thehorsehasnowbolted · 30/11/2022 20:31

It's outrageous that this lady (Susan Hussey) with years of service was forced to resign due to the Twitter mob. This has to stop now

People will just avoid engaging at all costs for fear of being cancelled and losing their jobs.

I mean, it probably makes sense for Susan Hussey to avoid engaging with people if that's how she's doing it.

fannyfartlet · 30/11/2022 20:37

Hills2022 · 30/11/2022 19:13

She resigned because of the Twitter mob, not because she had actually done anything wrong.

I think she was very racist so I'd say she definitely did something wrong.

Jesus!! You actually wrote that didn't you? Unbefuckinglievable

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 30/11/2022 20:37

It's an account which has been put on Twitter and sensationalised….to make up a script

Sensationalised how? What script? So witness testimony is useless in all cases, unless you were there? Why would this woman who runs a respected charity be an unreliable person? Why are you reading that into the situation? Why are you questioning her reaction and shock? Why are you defending a white woman you don’t know, have never met, will never meet? Why support one and not the other, when you weren’t there at all? Except others have come forward to corroborate the black woman, but you only trust the white woman.

Jesus effing Christ.

There is a new crowd in charge now.

King Charles is sending a clear message that racism will not be tolerated, regardless of the age or long service of the offender.

Surely this is a good thing?

CMZ2018 · 30/11/2022 20:38

MsBucket · 30/11/2022 20:28

@CMZ2018 What is? Did you miss the part where her hair was moved out of the way to check her name badge? Maybe you should read up about micro-aggressions? It might help you understand just a tad about why it is a big deal. What about the part when Ngozi Fulani was asked repeatedly about where she was from? But I suppose that’s just a storm in a tea cup. Oh and what about the lack of questions about Ms Fulani’s charity work instead of focusing solely on her heritage just as a form of othering? I suppose all of it is excitement or outrage over a trivial matter as that is exactly what you are implying.

I’m not implying anything. I thought it was fairly clear I thought it a trivial matter - that’s what the phrase ‘storm in a tea cup means’ a big fuss over nothing. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 30/11/2022 20:38

Susan Hussey was tactless and clumsy no question, but it is clear from the alleged verbatim exchange that the other party was being very disingenuous and the fact that she then chose to put the whole alleged exchange on Twitter makes it look very much like she had an agenda. A quick look at previous tweets makes it clear that this person has a very hostile view of the RF which does beg the question why she accepted the invitation in the first place given her hostility to the institution

Her own charity identifies their entire client group by their heritage not their nationality, yet she is traumatised when someone asks about her own heritage? Something doesn’t add up.

@Hills2022 What doesn’t add up? It’s entirely possible to have a charity focused on one issue etc. I find it belittling that you don’t find a person’s human experience of being questioned repeatedly in a form that clearly is othering in a public place in what seems to be a prestigious charity event to be traumatising. Clearly eyewitnesses also felt the same way and they did not invalidate or undermine Ngozi Fulani’s experience.

ditherydotty · 30/11/2022 20:40

@Mangolist I see no problem with what I wrote, oh hang on, I must be racist as I don't agree with you.

Rosscameasdoody · 30/11/2022 20:40

TheFairyCaravan · 30/11/2022 19:14

I knew it wouldn’t take long for her age to be used as an excuse when it’s really not.

It’s not an excuse but it’s a reason. A lot of older people are ‘casual’ racists and the questions this lady was asking kind of makes the point. At one point, when Fulani told of her Caribbean heritage, this lady was heard to reply along the lines of ‘I knew we’d get to the bottom of it eventually’. So racist AND entitled.

Hadjab · 30/11/2022 20:41

You wouldn't dress like that without expecting someone to ask where you were from

Weirdly, no one ever asks me if I'm from Texas when I wear denim...

VladmirsPoutine · 30/11/2022 20:42

I'm glad she spoke out. I hope more people do. Racism within royal spheres is akin to fish in the ocean; in other words - omnipresent.

NeelyOHara1 · 30/11/2022 20:42

It's a bit of a trip wired subject. Don't mention and you're ignorant about the importance of multiculturalism.

Gagaandgag · 30/11/2022 20:43

I just read the transcript - absolutely appalling, bullying and frankly disgusting racist.

jtaeapa · 30/11/2022 20:23

If the person making this comment had been 43yo, then I would agree that it was horrendously racist and unacceptable. But she is 83yo, so I don't think she can be condemned in the same way as a 43yo for making these comments. Unless she is a bully (which we have no idea of) it's likely she was trying to make conversation in a clumsy way and has taken a serious bashing and loss of role for it. She might actually want to go and die because of the national humiliation, if it is the case that she was trying to be friendly. On the other hand, she could be a bully who's finally been called out.

She was born before WW2 even started. She is from a completely different era to 99% of us.

Oh give over with the “but she’s 83” bull shit.

My nieces and nephews are mixed race. My dad is 80, my mum 78, they’ve never been racist. Even my grandparents, who were in their late seventies/early eighties when my sister got with her DP weren’t racist and could be relied upon not to be rude and offensive to him.

I very much doubt this is the first time LH has done this, and I, also, doubt it’s the first time that the RF have known about it either. It’s just the first time they couldn’t brush it under the carpet.

They might if you wore a cowboy hat! (And before anybody gets overexcited, no I am not comparing whatever was worn to the palace with a cowboy hat)

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 30/11/2022 20:43

This was a charitable version of a business function - an awareness-raising and networking opportunity.

If you were representing your company at an event for companies in the same industry, and someone asked 'where you were from' would you expect to respond -

a. 'I'm from Bloggs and Co. in Basingstoke'
or
b. 'Well, I was born in Surrey, my mum is from Edinburgh and my dad is from Glasgow, but he emigrated to Scotland from Ireland in 1962. They moved to England in 1971. My maternal grandparents were Welsh and further back, on my paternal granddad's side, we have Norwegian ancestors ....'
