Racism in the Royal Family

Susan Hussey has resigned. Philip was coming out with similar comments in public all his life, yet there was no move to get rid of him. AIBU to think this is more royal hypocrisy?

As far as I aware they have not commented on the rest of the conversation which is what I was responding to the pp about.

What do you think she said later to redeem herself?

Yes how can she possibly have made her comments unracist?

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 30/11/2022 20:17

I'm not a racist

Actually you don't get to be the arbiter of that, @Snoozer11 . Any more than someone who harasses women gets to decide whether they are a misogynist.

Motorcycleemptyness · 30/11/2022 20:17

Snoozer11 · 30/11/2022 20:13

Mate, I've explained all my posts. Your word means nothing and you are not superior to me, no matter how much you might think that.

Some people have "told me" that they don't like some of my posts, some people agree with me.

I've told people why I'm not racist. Their word doesn't trump mine.

And I'm not a racist, mate.

Except saying racist things isn’t cancelled out by saying ‘I’m not a racist’. Hence why ‘I’m not racist but…’ is the oldest nonsense in the book.

You ARE a racist, and you should be ashamed.

If people can't tell what's offensive/racist about that conversation, that's worrying

And I completely agree the "where are you from" question can be racist and offensive.

But here I think Fulani was insolent. This is based on comments she has made previously, the public flogging of an elderly woman she initiated, and the questionable timing.

She could have said she was born in X, now lives in Y but has Z heritage. Why would you agree to attend a function to just show hostility when someone tries to make small talk?

She resigned because of the Twitter mob, not because she had actually done anything wrong.

Have you read what she said? I'd say that was wrong.

Ngozi Fulani wanted to talk about her charity, Sistah Space. That was what the event was for - to centre the issue of violence against women. Susan Hussey blocked not one, but two attempts of Ngozi's to talk about Sistah Space and then refused to accept Ngozi's repeated answers that she was British. How anyone can think that is reasonable conduct is beyond me.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 30/11/2022 20:22

@Hills2022 appears to have lost the plot, @YumSushi . Although that probably happened right at the beginning of this thread when she told us that Hussey hadn't said anything wrong.

What's wrong with Hackney?!

SaySomethingMan · 30/11/2022 20:23

TeaHotorCold · 30/11/2022 20:09

goodness. it's the fact she kept asking and asking and not accepting the answer she was given is the issue! So many racists' apologists here.

(from BBC as recounted by Ngozi)

Lady SH: Where are you from?
Me: Sistah Space.
SH: No, where do you come from?
Me: We're based in Hackney.
SH: No, what part of Africa are you from?
Me: I don't know, they didn't leave any records.
SH: Well, you must know where you're from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?
Me: Here, the UK.
SH: No, but what nationality are you?
Me: I am born here and am British.
SH: No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?
Me: 'My people', lady, what is this?
SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from. When did you first come here?
Me: Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50s when...
SH: Oh, I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean!
Me: No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.
SH: Oh so you're from...

I fail to see how anyone can read this conversation,´, believes it happened this way, and still tried to justify her comments id not racist.

I read the story and thought at first, ´it’s not great but it happens’. This exchange is something else.

If the person making this comment had been 43yo, then I would agree that it was horrendously racist and unacceptable. But she is 83yo, so I don't think she can be condemned in the same way as a 43yo for making these comments. Unless she is a bully (which we have no idea of) it's likely she was trying to make conversation in a clumsy way and has taken a serious bashing and loss of role for it. She might actually want to go and die because of the national humiliation, if it is the case that she was trying to be friendly. On the other hand, she could be a bully who's finally been called out.

She was born before WW2 even started. She is from a completely different era to 99% of us.

YumSushi · 30/11/2022 20:23

@notwavingbutdrowning1 Thanks was very confused

Quveas · 30/11/2022 20:23

Makes me bloody laugh. Where are you from? Africa. No, where are you from? Africa.....

If you are a human being and currently alive, then you are from AFRICA. To be fair, your forebears might have slept around a lot. So there's maybe a bit of Neanderthal or even more rarely, a bit of Denisovan. You know? Mixed race?

So many people on here rushing to defend a racist because they think being "white" or "old" or even "possibly half deaf" is an excuse.

Why should she accept being interrogated about her heritage by someone who is absolutely refusing to accept she is British though? Fair enough if the conversation moves that way naturally (for eg talking about her work with women from African heritage and then inviting questions about her own heritage) but if someone (as was the case) was demanding that information right from the off, someone who is wilfully refusing to accept that she’s from hackney (even though she is) doesn’t deserve that information. Thats not how conversation works.

also Hackney is nice. So fuck off.

but come on, how could the DoE resigned? That’s the entire point of them, we’re stuck with the noncy racist fuckers regardless of how awful they are

Exactly - we are stuck with them whatever noxious behaviour they demonstrate. Time to get rid of the lot of them.

I'd vote for that.

Ah, there's the rub. We have an antediluvian system that fails to make our Head of State and her bloated family, friends and hangers-on in any way accountable.

QEII two months dead and already the shiny veneer is starting to come off.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 30/11/2022 20:25

YumSushi · 30/11/2022 20:23

What's wrong with Hackney?!

It is the charity, Sistah Space that is based in Hackney. No idea what is supposed to be 'wrong' with Hackney.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 30/11/2022 20:26

If this Hussey woman can’t carry out public duties to any sort of decent standard then regardless of age she should have been fired. It being racism is just crazy to me, how can you defend the exchange? It’s not clumsy, it’s offensive. She has no actual interest in the Sistah Space lady, or her heritage. The royals represent US all - they are our public servants, as are the Royal servants. Totally unacceptable.
