Racism in the Royal Family

Susan Hussey has resigned. Philip was coming out with similar comments in public all his life, yet there was no move to get rid of him. AIBU to think this is more royal hypocrisy?

Why are people even defending the Hussey woman when she MUST HAVE been in the wrong to resign?!

conversations like the Hussey woman went with… it’s not even for an understandable end point. Even when people like that dig down to the question they’re asking, ie heritage and family history, they never then ask interesting and sensitive questions… so she found out that the nice Sistah Space woman had Caribbean heritage… then what? Any interesting convo after that, a love of the Caribbean she wished to share? No!! It’s normally to “place” people, but more in some racist’s hierarchy. It’s so fucked up!

She was wearing an outfit that made her stand out, and people are responding as if she didn't stand out at all.

I'm saying if you wear something that makes you stand out, people will notice you!

The costume was a poor example but I was trying to point out how ridiculous posters sound with their faux naivety.

A kilt would be a better example. If everyone at a wedding is in smart trousers but one man is wearing a kilt, it's going to be a point of conversation.

Then if you want to you say so tell me about your kilt and let them do the talking.

LonginesPrime · 30/11/2022 20:03

The lady in waiting or whatever she is called should have been briefed better.

I can only imagine how that would have gone...

If she needs to be briefed on how to behave in an acceptable and respectful manner when meeting each person with a different background/skin colour from her own, she shouldn't be in that role.

I'm working class, and you know nothing about me or why I wear such clothes. So you are just making assumptions based on your own ignorance, and proving the point that your stress just like her. What's your excuse?

Yeah I mean presumably she's been doing this sort of thing for years

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 30/11/2022 20:03

can i ask a person who i think might be polish, or similar accent, where they are from? or is that racist?

Fulani was asked where she was from because of her skin colour, not because of her accent. Race is a protected characteristic; accent isn't.

The point is, Hussey didn't accept her answer.

FFS, do we really have to explain these things? There are posters on this thread who have experienced similar treatment to Fulani and explained how offensive it is. Perhaps the racist apologists on here should take a moment to absorb that, rather than thinking that they know better.

AffIt · 30/11/2022 20:03

A little bit apropos of nothing, but I used to work in these kinds of circles and I once had the oddest exchange with some ancient dowager duchess type.

I'm Scottish, white and have a, you know, Scottish accent, but this auld yin kept at me with 'But where are you from?'

(I should add I was in my mid-20s at the time: I'm early 40s now and would have shut it down at source much earlier these days.)

I was insistent that I was Scottish-born and bred, until, grasping at straws, I said that my paternal grandfather was Romanian, to which she answered 'Ah! I knew it! Such Slavic cheekbones!'.

I can completely understand how Ngozi Fulani felt hounded.

TheKeatingFive · 30/11/2022 20:04

can i ask a person who i think might be polish, or similar accent, where they are ? or is that racist?

Of course you can 🙄

But you don't keep badgering them when they've already answered you. Revealing your racial prejudices.

Once she had been hung drawn and quartered on Twitter there was no option but for her to resign. And we certainly don’t know what the rest of the conversation was as the person reporting the conversation has done so selectively.

@Snoozer11 Mate, the only ‘faux naive’ comments around here are YOURS. ‘But WHY can’t I say racist shit and hassle people because they don’t look British enough for me? But SHE WAS ASKING FOR IT BECAUSE OF THE WAY SHE WAS DRESSED….blah blah blah (some barely readable crap about a bugs bunny costume)’.

fucking honestly. A number of people have explained to you why it was a racist thing to do. A number of people have explained to you that black people have a variation of this conversation thrust upon them far too often, and it’s unacceptable. It is absolutely hypocritical to call others faux naive. Just catch a grip of yourself and give it up. You’re a racist.

TeaHotorCold · 30/11/2022 20:09

goodness. it's the fact she kept asking and asking and not accepting the answer she was given is the issue! So many racists' apologists here.

(from BBC as recounted by Ngozi)

Lady SH: Where are you from?
Me: Sistah Space.
SH: No, where do you come from?
Me: We're based in Hackney.
SH: No, what part of Africa are you from?
Me: I don't know, they didn't leave any records.
SH: Well, you must know where you're from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?
Me: Here, the UK.
SH: No, but what nationality are you?
Me: I am born here and am British.
SH: No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?
Me: 'My people', lady, what is this?
SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from. When did you first come here?
Me: Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50s when...
SH: Oh, I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean!
Me: No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.
SH: Oh so you're from...

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 30/11/2022 20:10

And we certainly don’t know what the rest of the conversation was as the person reporting the conversation has done so selectively.

Actually we do. There were witnesses who have corroborated the account.

TheKeatingFive · 30/11/2022 20:10

Once she had been hung drawn and quartered on Twitter there was no option but for her to resign.

The decision came down to the palace. I'm sure they would have loved to brush it under the carpet, but due to their own multiple reasons they couldn't.

My opinion, I'm sticking with it.

StoneofDestiny · 30/11/2022 20:11

If you saw a man in a kilt, would it be so bad to ask where he was from? And if he answered "Stoke on Trent", wouldn't you try to clarify the question?

I was waiting for this 'analogy'.

Britain is multicultural. Must British/UK citizens only wear suits/ties/tea dresses etc? Would you expect all kilt wearing men to be in Scotland? Is Charles grilled about where he is really from every time he steps out in his Balmoral Tartan?

Im a Scot and endlessly asked where I'm 'actually' from whenever I've given my English address when I've lived there. No big deal - and not in the least comparable to what the exchange was like between the royal representative and the guest of the royals!

Up until this part of the conversation, it could have been dismissed as a bit gauche/inept. After that, it turned very

Mate, I've explained all my posts. Your word means nothing and you are not superior to me, no matter how much you might think that.

Some people have "told me" that they don't like some of my posts, some people agree with me.

I've told people why I'm not racist. Their word doesn't trump mine.

And I'm not a racist, mate.

People can't be racist without being accused of being racist
