Racism in the Royal Family

StoneofDestiny · 30/11/2022 19:06

Susan Hussey has resigned. Philip was coming out with similar comments in public all his life, yet there was no move to get rid of him. AIBU to think this is more royal hypocrisy?

Clutterbugsmum · 30/11/2022 22:22

I can't believe the amount of people on here trying to justify how Susan Hussey racism.

She would have been fully briefed as to what the reception was, who it was for and which charity/people would be there. There was absolutely no reason to carry on asking the same question after the "where are you from" when given the charity's name. May ask where it was based and nothing else,

Utterly ridiculous.
I would ask where her family came from.
People ask me where I come from - do I think they are racist, of course I bloody don't.
Any f..king excuse to pull the race card yet again.

Well you sound a delight.

I'd find it very odd if you asked me where my family came from within seconds of meeting me. But you wouldn't do that, because I'm white.

Why would you ask someone you have only just met where their family came from?

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 30/11/2022 22:24

I saw that interview. She went on and fucking on.

Not surprised it came across as racist. It was.

Dibbydoos · 30/11/2022 22:26

Is this racist? I'm happy for people to ask me about my heritage, I'm mixed race. I'm also comfy asking others about their heritage too - have your family always lived in Manchester/ Ireland/Isle of Man? Is the same as asking which country their ancestors are from. No where in what was asked was there negativity about Manchester/Ireland/Isle of Man or ancestral home.

What the DofE has said and BJ and his gang about races def was racist
.

The world has gone bananas imo...

Why would you ask someone where your family is from? Ngozi Fulani said she's from Hackney. That's where the questioning should stop, if indeed it was needed at all.

DutchessOfMuck · 30/11/2022 22:27

Not read the whole thread. I've seen the transcript of the conversation from the womans point of view (sorry don't know her name) Did anyone else hear this conversation? Or has this been reported from one side only?

Did the Queens Lady in waiting confirm the conversation to be true?

Genuine questions

m00rfarm · 30/11/2022 22:32

StoneofDestiny · 30/11/2022 22:05

I have been asked in a rural place (not England) who my people are, I never ever take offence to it, they are curious and interested. Wouldn't even cross my mind there was any discrimination

Oh come on, that's not what happened.

I'm a Scot. If I was asked where I'm from I'd say Scotland. If I was asked where I was really from, I'd say Glasgow. If I was pushed further, 'where are you really from, who are your people', I'd certainly feel bewildered, interrogated and certainly increasingly angry - as the implication would be I'm not Scottish or Glaswegian!
If said interrogator touched my hair..................

But if someone asked you where you came from, would you answer this by telling your questioner where your company was based? It appeared as though the (stupid and likely racist without realising it) older lady was being led to the conversation that ended up reflecting fairly poorly on both people. The older lady was clearly asking questions which are not acceptable, and the younger lady (based on the transcript I saw on TV which may or may not be accurate) appeared to be encouraging the conversation to go in an unacceptable direction.

Could the younger lady not have removed herself from the conversation before it got to this point if she was that distressed about it? Of course, she should not NEED to do that, but it would have been a good option in that situation.

I am white. So my reaction here is presumably incompatible with other views, but I think I would be proud of my heritage and answer the question based on where I was born and my heritage. Maybe I am racist as well. I don't believe I am.

Bunnycat101 · 30/11/2022 22:34

I’m shocked people are still defending this. As a white person, I would never be asked those same questions with the same degree of questioning . In that sort of networking event, I’d be amazed if someone asked me anything more probing than ‘where are you based? or did you travel far?’ Id expect to be talking about my job not my personal life.

fannyfartlet · 30/11/2022 22:36

Neapolitanicecream · 30/11/2022 20:50

so a person asking another person where are you from is racist even if they are both of Asian descent? As I overheard in the office

But that's not how this conversation went is it?

WeDontTalkAboutBrunoNoNoNo · 30/11/2022 22:36

This thread makes for utterly depressing reading 😔

YumSushi · 30/11/2022 22:36

@m00rfarm Why are you focusing on the victims actions?

FluffyCat17 · 30/11/2022 22:37

I think once the guest had stated she was born in Britain that line of questioning was over. To be honest when she said Hackney it should have ended.
Maybe the royal staff person meant heritage but they wouldn’t ask me, cos I am white. So I can see why people are cross she continued to push.

HRTQueen · 30/11/2022 22:38

Being asked where you are from is not the same as asking what your heritage is

its two different questions

StoneofDestiny · 30/11/2022 22:38

But if someone asked you where you came from, would you answer this by telling your questioner where your company was based?

Probably yes, in the context of that gathering of charitable groups. I'd assume they were asking me what one I represented and I'd say 'Crisis' or whatever. I'd not imagine my cultural origins would form part of any inquiry. It would be like suddenly saying 'are you married?' (like, why are you asking me that?)

You should definitely report any overtly racist posts

I did and they were removed. Why didn't you, @Hills2022 ?

A very depressing thread @m00rfarm 'I don't believe I'm racist ...really?!!

CustardUnicorn · 30/11/2022 22:45

They believe God chose them to rule Britain. They think they're better than everyone else, white and black.

Endlessly surprised why people are shocked when the royal family are racist. They were the Empire.

keffie12 · 30/11/2022 22:45

H & M were called liars over racism in the Royal household. Oh, the irony! It would be funny if it wasn't so disgusting.

I bet they are fuming. Not one family member stuck up for them, did they.

People wonder why they left! 🙄

ILoveeCakes · 30/11/2022 22:45

Yeah, yeah, lets label something as "racist" and lose our shit - on command.

Or maybe just don't bother.

LemonSwan · 30/11/2022 22:45

The exchange was outrageous.

But as a side point I have actually stopped asking anyone I meet who’s not white where they are from. It seems to be they hate the question which is quite sad. If you from hackney great, if your from Iceland great. I really don’t care just trying to be polite and cover the basics, but about 50% of the time there’s this awkward moment where they stare at you before they answer and you wonder whether you spoke double Dutch.

Took me a while to cotton on it was a ‘are you racist stare’.

WeDontTalkAboutBrunoNoNoNo · 30/11/2022 22:47

Some of the responses on this thread read like non shite people are a lighted to disclose their heritage when questioned by white people and anything response to the contrary is insolence. So bizarre.

Also, to claim that "she went there to cause trouble" is inherently racist.

WeDontTalkAboutBrunoNoNoNo · 30/11/2022 22:48

White*

pinheadlarry · 30/11/2022 22:49

Im sure she was just curious, if you're wearing cultural garment expect people to show interest
Saying "hackney" is really standoffish and defensive
And if another african person asked her, she would have responded differently
