The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

My Boomer dh used to be given a sweet smoker’s kit for Christmas, complete with licorice pipe and sweet tobacco. 😱

Discoh · 30/11/2022 18:15

Yup to Supernanny, made even worse when you consider that a lot of the children quite obviously were neurodivergent

This is interesting because my experience of Supernanny is this she really sorted people out. Everyone is acting as though she caused harm, but she didn't did she?

Electric scooters swerving across the road and mounting the pavement wherever they want to. Delivery motor scooters riding along a wide PAVEMENT to get to the takeaway shop. (Maybe they don't want their vehicle nicked.) Cyclists carrying their tiny kids in those low level carts along roads with fast moving traffic.

Rankings in state school, so children can get to see who is better at exams than them.

The huge cost of electric and gas bills and being told very little can be done about it.

The state of social care.

Me too, a very deprived ex-mining village. A lot describe it as rough.

I think a lot of people on here are shocked at the no-license thing because they’ve clearly never experienced northern council estate living 😂

People are not disbelieving though, but statistically the police were stopping people in the 90s, and it wasn't the norm that people didn't have a licence.

Clawdy · 30/11/2022 19:28

Most of these aren't "recent" at all!

Everyone having to pretend that a man becomes a woman if he puts on pink lipstick and uses the ladies loo

Going with this. Because, for some unkown reason, men LARPing as women STILL seems to be ok....

Sadbeigechildren · 30/11/2022 19:28

Many things about Super Nanny were good and she was none the worse for not having her own children. You can be rubbish at discipline and have children and vice versa.

Leaded petrol wasn't banned until 2000. There are still particles of it in the air in London! It was known at the time it was developed how bad it was for human health. www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-57564953.amp

The same guy that invented leaded petrol also invented CFCs 🤦‍♀️

Thomas Midgley Jr...I remember him from a QI episode.

In 1940, at the age of 51, Midgley contracted polio, which left him severely disabled. He devised an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys to lift himself out of bed. In 1944, he became entangled in the device and died of strangulation.

Late 70’s child. Smoking everywhere - including my teacher in the classroom when I was age 10. After break we’d come back to the WORST cigar smell.

No seat belts.

Hitting children in school.

Dentists randomly pulling children’s teeth out with gas without parental consent.

That sort of thing.

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/11/2022 19:29

My daughter was born in 1989, and there was a smoking room on our ward! It was called the television room, but it was so full of smoke that you couldn't go in unless you did smoke. This was the place that female patients were meant to smoke, it wasn't as though they were sneaking a cheeky cigarette.

The utterly disgusting way the gutter press used to write about gay celebrities in general, and George Michaels in particular. Writing about people as if they should be ashamed, outing people. I can remember in my mid teens being outraged about the way he was treat.

Certain papers haven’t improved a great deal.

Yes. I remember this.
so utterly awful.

This is interesting because my experience of Supernanny is this she really sorted people out. Everyone is acting as though she caused harm, but she didn't did she?

She resolved issues for families like kids running off into the road, kids refusing to eat anything but sweets and crisps, kids refusing to go to bed. She also affirmed the importance of a positive relationship and often told parents they had to spend more time with their children playing with them and talking to them about the DCs interests.
I think people criticise because they like to think it is natural for DCs to be a total nightmare and nothing can be done.

Only having 4 channels on TV - does that count? 😂. Not sure we’re that much better off with the gazillion we have now.

People are not disbelieving though, but statistically the police were stopping people in the 90s, and it wasn't the norm that people didn't have a licence.

I was raised in slums, and they were called that at the time. I did not think it was normal not to have a licence. Sure some people did, but in the same way some people stole from shops but I did not think it was normal and everyone did it.

The show " It ain't half hot mum" . Outrageous racism. They would kick and Insult the Indians , and treated them as less worthy than any white person..

Let's go the whole hog of stupidity, Romeo and Juliet, underage relationships, Othello, nasty to Moors, Julius Caesar backstabbing at its finest, etc etc, There has to be a historical line drawn or can we cancel the French for 1066, the Romans for their invasion, the Danes for their raping and pillaging?

You said JF could not 'speak properly' that is rude and ignorant. What impact did/does that have on her professional capabilities? She's not an elecution teacher.

What’s that got to do with her accent?
Jo Frost uses a lot of malapropisms which kind of undermines her ‘stern’ Voice and superior tone when she’s bollocking small children in front of TV cameras. A girl from the show who is now an adult has recently spoken out about her time on the show and how invasive and upsetting it was. I suspect Jo Frost knew it would be upsetting for kids but wanted to rake in the game anyway.

CountrySky · 30/11/2022 19:34

I think in the future we will be shocked

  • people are able to take photos of anyone they want and upload them online without consent (deepfaking trend as well, awful)
  • are able to troll people anonymously online
  • that despite the amazing tech we have in the world, all our children are just a few clicks away from pornography

Basically all the worst things about the net.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 30/11/2022 19:35

ugh such a shame a forced Ruth comment has been thrown in the thread (and FYI cleft palates aren’t just a li that needs to be repaired they often point to much, much more severe underlying problems)

I loved those too. The "tobacco" was so tasty.

Making your children look like they've been murdered or they're dead whilst holding a meat cleaver/machete and walking around the street knocking on strangers doors for sweets.

Goodness.

The only one of these I'm not in favour of is drug-related (but that's because I have no experience of or interest in drugs).

I'm not convinced that Jim'll Fix or Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em are what anyone might call "recent".

I agree. I’ve said in the past that foodbanks are, at the same time, our country’s biggest shame and the thing we should be really proud of. They are our biggest shame because no-one should need to get food handouts in a developed, wealthy country, but the way ordinary people, who aren’t much better off themselves, still give to foodbanks, is a testament to how great people here are.
